Wonderful video! I'd love to hear more about a couple of things: the mineral/salt block, and what to do if you live somewhere where you can't find hay/straw/mineral blocks. (I live in a small town at the edge of a peninsula of an island). Since it's tropical and there are lush greens everywhere, all the equine owners I know just have them graze all day.
I have asked around and none of them know anyone who sells hay and they don't seem to understand why someone would buy hay if there's already plants/grass everywhere (which could explain why apparently no one sells it). What would you do in this situation? Thanks in advance for the help! - New donkey mom of three

Great video! How often do you recommend they get their teeth floated when they are under five-ten years old?

Are your donkeys on any pasture? I have read that donkeys should not be without forage ever. 24/7 hay/forage. How does this not make them overweight? Thank you!

Thank you for this comment. Do you mind if we ask where did you read that information? Because it’s very inaccurate and it’s troubling if donkey owners are reading that and using it to care for their donkeys. Donkeys should not have access to forage/hay all the time. They originated in Northern Africa which means they are acclimated to dry weather and a low protein high fiber diet. You can provide barley straw all the time since it does not have any protein value. But you cannot provide pasture or by 24/7. Our donkeys are in pasture a few hours very limited times in the week. I hope this helps!

How do donkeys keep all their teeth ground down in the wild? Chewing sand/stones when they forage? Don’t think they would have evolved teeth eruption if it was going to hurt them. Thanks for the educational videos. I aspire to be a donkey owner someday soon.

Kym Allison this is a great question! And yes they do grind them down partly with sand/minerals that they get in the wild but the truth is that they do not live long lives in the wild as they do in captivity. Their love span is shorter in the wild by about 10-15 years.
