Hi - That is Kellies Hut, my family had the "run" and my first memories were of mustering cattle into the stock yard further up the valley. For your information we never stayed up there with the cattle. We would take them up in the spring and return in the autum to muster them. "The muster" took about 3 weeks. Then they were walked down to Heyfield, which took about 5 days. The origininal cladding was flattened kerosene cans that were carried up on pack horses. When my father started going up there it was all by packhorse from Licola. When I used ot go up to Kellies Hut there was a platform at the rear of the hut that was where they slept. My father built the stock yards at Tamboritha Saddle. We used that to truck the cattle down rather than walking the cattle all the way down.
Than you very very much for that bit of history, that is honestly a pretty special thing to be able to pass down and have an accounting of. Information like this is really valuable to me, as word of mouth accounts have much more detail then anything you will find online. Those stock yards at Tambiritha saddle truely are pretty photogenic looking piece of the past. The one where the loading ramp is built into the trees?
@@TheBeardedBushranger Yes the yards with the loading race using the 2 trees. We also had the freehold paddock as you follow the track down to the first bridge over Shaws Creek.

Yes, I am from Canada in the Rocky Mountains. Have cousins in Sydney. Our best day in winter is still 10 times worse than your worst day in Victoria. @@TheBeardedBushranger I'll try and produce a couple of setups based on my recent chair frame pack video, ready to take out testing up this side of the ranges. Mount Buffalo, Speculation, Bogong or Hotham..
I used to do the plastic bag thing over the socks but I realised it's actually a terrible idea 🤣 If you think about its, you would never wear a plastic bag over your body then put a jacket over the top. It's okay when you're moving but it causes you feet to sweat a lot and it doesn't wick away so as soon as you stop moving, the sweat on your feel starts to cool, then freezes and your feet get even more cold than what they would have. @@stepbystep125 thanks mate. Absy had lots of fruits and noodles on the trip! Yeah it all depends on who I'm doing a trip with. Hey mate, another great vid. I really do love the high country. But! Let your fire die down before you cook ya meat!!! Im sorry, my adhd and torment from being a chef made me comment this lol
I wish traditional fabrics worked year round where I live. I love wool, but need synthetics 4-6 months of the year to recreate outdoors. As I type this, it is -8 F and snowing. Excellent content, btw!
Why do you think that? as in why do you believe you need synthetics for 4 - 6 months of the year? You mean when its too hot? I tend to just wear cotton in the summer.
Cheers for watching. The waxed canvas poncho did great in the snow, kept my upper torso totally dry, and even laying it down on the snow it gave a fair bit of insulation.
While hiking I only had a tshirt on under my waxed canvas poncho ... my tshirt was pretty covered in sweat by the end of the hike ... but I kept most of warm stuff dry in bag so I could change into it once reaching camp.
Good spot haha I didn't evne notice that. It was a family that pulled up to the car park as we were setting off .. that person moving in the background is a little kid. I think they were just checking out the snow.
Hey I appreciate you wanting to know. I tend to avoid making locations public on the internet (it's a common courtesty thing for the locals who live there) But I'm willing to say we headed north from traralgon. Get a map and go exploring!!
Nice one Luke. I love your narration and fascination with the history .Only thing is .... You forgot to take your spray can to do some tagging . bloody Idiots !
They encourage you not to sleep in the huts, unless extreme weather or emergencies you are right. As a kind of common courtesy thing, I will only sleep in a hut during winter in the snow. If this was summer, spring or autumn, I wouldn't be sleeping in the hut. That night was the coldest we had in 40 years ... so it's a bit subjective wether that classes as a legitmate reason to sleep in there or not. I know some people who have slept in huts because of lots of rain .. whereas others will say that's not a good enough reason. Talk to different folks and they will have different opinions. I once slept in one on the bogong high plains because me and my 2 year old son were surrounded by wild dogs in the night while in my swag ... I thought that was also a pretty good reason.
@@TheBeardedBushranger yeah ok sweet. I wasn’t having a go or anything m, I was genuinely unsure. It’s just that I’m looking at heading up to Mount Feathertop later in The year and I’ve been doing a bit of research on the huts. Thats where I read about “use only in emergencies”. Trust me mate ... I'm not doing it for 'views'. This is how i've always done it and the only reason i'm joking bout the micro plastics is cause if you scroll down on the video .. many others have already warned me about it and I won't be doing it again.

Was actually pretty warm during the day (maybe 5 to 6.c) but at night time (when I wasn't doing much filming) it got very cold you could see our breath.
Kellys hut, hardly in one of Australia's most remote wildernesses. A road runs right up to it. Even if you walked in from Arbuckle Junction, it's a pretty modest "adventure". Amazing what you can do with camera angles. And thankfully cattle are no longer allowed to be grazed in the alps - they trashed the high country for decades.
I don't think you know this country very well , firstly you'd come in from Tambo saddle and just because you can drive to the fence 100m from the hut dont mean it ain't remote n deadly . Ive been caught a few times in storms around here and count my blessing I survived remote or not by your account.. I'm with the bearded one , onya , fair enough pal..
We have a section down south along the great dividing range which we call the Australian Alps (or the high country) in winter it gets cold enough on these mountains to get snow.

Cheers mate thanks for watching.
Epic trip mate that looked cold as hell
That first morning was very frosty, some of the frost was like shards of crystals.
That's an incredible vista at around the 25 minute mark. It looks almost like a bleak desert, other than the fact the 'sand' is too white.
Yeah it really is a kind of arid looking environment, you can see why not much survives in polar regions of the world.
With this cold snap moving across Australia currently I'd imagine much more snow on the mountains.
Yeah plenty of snow coming in this week. I hope we keep getting snow up till next month cause I want to go back out there but with only traditional gear.
That poncho looks awesome, warm as well? Well done on a tough hike 😎🤙
Yeah the poncho is really warm, gives off a good amount of insulation .. keeps you dry and also keeps the wind off you.
You went on an adventure for fun, the old timers did it to survive. Most people wouldn't do that with the most expensive gear! Loo great on you guys! 🫡
Thanks for watching! I still think some of the old timers had a real sense of exploration and adventure as well! Maybe not so much for fun, but for new ventures and exploring the unknown.
Thanks Luke 🍻☃️
And thank you for watching!
Looking forward to seeing more exploration of plastics free.
Looking forward to getting back into the snow with traditional gear.
@@TheBeardedBushranger I'll try and produce a couple of setups based on my recent chair frame pack video, ready to take out testing up this side of the ranges. Mount Buffalo, Speculation, Bogong or Hotham..
@@Peakoilcompany That chair frame pack looks absolutely mint!
Awesome vid Luke! Keep up the great work mate! 💪💪
Was that Mt Reynard ?
Thanks for watching.
Good spot 😉
Very cool❄❄my friend😎
A very good pun haha
I used to do the plastic bag thing over the socks but I realised it's actually a terrible idea 🤣
If you think about its, you would never wear a plastic bag over your body then put a jacket over the top. It's okay when you're moving but it causes you feet to sweat a lot and it doesn't wick away so as soon as you stop moving, the sweat on your feel starts to cool, then freezes and your feet get even more cold than what they would have.
Thanks for the vid
I reckon your right mate. Since this vid I've actually invested in a pair of insulated snow hiking boots. Much better!
Great Stuff!
I LOVE my snow camping, but I'm working in far north Queensland at the moment, so I'll have to be content with watching your video. Thank you!!! Looks beautiful and I miss it!!!
Thanks for watching! Well at least you get some beautiful tropical beaches up that way! I do love the variety between winter and summer here though.
What did Absy have for dinner bruv? Loved the video, love the content. Would really appreciate some context including the whole crew.
@@stepbystep125 thanks mate. Absy had lots of fruits and noodles on the trip! Yeah it all depends on who I'm doing a trip with. Some people feel very natural in front of a camera (like other youtubers) and some may avoid it more, so I don't try and push it too much and put a camera constantly in thier face
@@stepbystep125 he was very hardy and a great hiking companion
Oh awesome! Thank you for your feedback. Really loving the content man.
Hey mate, another great vid. I really do love the high country.
But! Let your fire die down before you cook ya meat!!!
Im sorry, my adhd and torment from being a chef made me comment this lol
😂 Flame grilled meat is the best kind of meat though haha
Thanks for watching.
@@TheBeardedBushranger I'm sure it was fine haha. I'm just a dog
😆
Fun fact. We have the oldest ski club in the world. Its in Perisher NSW. 😎
awesome mate. I had read up in NSW is where skiing was very first introduced to Australia.
Australians and snow 😂 enjoy your videos and the history. Shame somone felt the need to spray paint a 100 year old hut.
haha It's a novelty for us>
And yeah, probably a bunch of young folks who got no care for heritage. Shame.
The question i want to ask is the bread plastic bags have to be white, wholemeal or multigrain. 😏
Wholemeal or multigrain ... because no one should be eating whitebread 😆
Love that old hut mate. Has so much character. How did you find that blanket thingy in the snow? Keep you warm? Cheers Dave 🇦🇺 🇳🇿
Cheers for watching. The waxed canvas poncho did great in the snow, kept my upper torso totally dry, and even laying it down on the snow it gave a fair bit of insulation.
How is the poncho from them? I've been eyeing one off for a while. Great video mate love your work!
Loved it, will be using on most of my wet weather or snow camps from now I reckon. only issue is it can be a bit annoying wearing it with a pack.
I agree, the Victoria. high country is beautiful but gee it is remote. I have no idea how people live there. 🇦🇺👍🍺
Yeah I love that place.
Do you sweat at all?
I usually hike in my speedo because I sweat no matter how cold it is😜
While hiking I only had a tshirt on under my waxed canvas poncho ... my tshirt was pretty covered in sweat by the end of the hike ... but I kept most of warm stuff dry in bag so I could change into it once reaching camp.
2:45 was that random person in the background with you guys LOL?
Good spot haha I didn't evne notice that. It was a family that pulled up to the car park as we were setting off .. that person moving in the background is a little kid. I think they were just checking out the snow.
What mountain/hill did you summit
Hey I appreciate you wanting to know. I tend to avoid making locations public on the internet (it's a common courtesty thing for the locals who live there) But I'm willing to say we headed north from traralgon. Get a map and go exploring!!
Nice one Luke. I love your narration and fascination with the history .Only thing is ....
You forgot to take your spray can to do some tagging . bloody Idiots !
Yeah that neon green spray paint was pretty annoying! Regardless it was still a beautiful hut to stay the night in.
Thanks for watching.
Aye !
I thought all the roads in the high country were closed at the moment?
Roads are closed (during winter) 7-8km further along from where they parked (arbuckle junction - tamboritha/howit road).
There are plenty of 4wd tracks still open around the high country that snow will reach
Is this known as kelly country.
Kelly country is more to the north (around the beechworth area)
Hey man, love your vids. I thought huts were only meant to be used in emergencies?? Are there different rules depending on the hut/location??
I definitely would have stayed in the hut too. Let’s be honest the hut would’ve been handy on your second night haha Good stuff 👍🏻
@@lukemerriman7939 I know some huts are purposly built for hikers to use as well .. like Vallejo Gantner hut.
Baked beans cooked in the plastic liner of the tin 😂😂😂😂😂
You don't plastic particles in your food?
@TheBeardedBushranger nope! I try to educate people not to endanger them for the sake of views.
Trust me mate ... I'm not doing it for 'views'. This is how i've always done it and the only reason i'm joking bout the micro plastics is cause if you scroll down on the video .. many others have already warned me about it and I won't be doing it again.
Definitely taking a chair next time.
We need to set up a go fund me page for you so you can get one 😆

Yes us redheads burn easy but we can handle cold weather it's that vitamin d soaring in our blood haha great work.....question I have for you mate....I'm about to hit 1k subbs should I monetize or get PayPal and patron donations instead ? Thoughts and advice would be muchly appreciated sir thankyou 🍻🇦🇺
Hey mate, yeah I genuinly love the cold winter .. it's the nordic and germaic blood in me I think!
That's great you are going to hit 1k subs, I remember when I first got monitized on my other channel is when I also started a patreon. I kind of felt because I reached monitization that is when I felt I earned or was comfortable in starting a patreon. So you really could do both! If people are happy to support you then why not!
@@TheBeardedBushranger I mean running ads for 1cent a view doesn't phase me really I was thinking PayPal and patron for support aswell as selling merch? I have a gardening business so I don't need it to relie on but the whole greedy UA-cam thing is a bit unpleasantly unwelcoming
@@TheBeardedBushranger monetizing or not what can you point me to do first? I don't think I can monetize because I play music in my videos etc prob get copyright or some shit and I don't wanna loose my videos ?
@@TasHikingAdventures I think a patreon is always great. another way to make some money is via affiliate links. Reach out to brands that you use and see if they will allow you to be a part of an affiliate program. Then you can review thier products and if anyone buys, you get a cut.
@@TheBeardedBushranger I found that buy me coffee is better than patreon....ko fi is ok but I don't want to force my subbs to sign up to ana count to donate....nor reach a limit per.month before I can withdraw....was researching for a few hrs yesterday...I'm going with buy me a coffee and go fund me...thanks for the tips
If it's winter, how come I can't see your breath?
Was actually pretty warm during the day (maybe 5 to 6.c) but at night time (when I wasn't doing much filming) it got very cold you could see our breath.
dont eat the yellow snow
lemon flavoured!
@@rowville22 if you don't want to call the Vic high country a remote wilderness then fair enough mate
You Should SACK The make-up person, as they Did a prick of a Job with The Snow on The Intro photo. Ya Goose.
I'll sack me'self then! 😆
How is there snow in Australia? This is insane. I thought Australia was sunny and sandy ground year long with Roos running about. 🦘
We have a section down south along the great dividing range which we call the Australian Alps (or the high country) in winter it gets cold enough on these mountains to get snow.
@@TheBeardedBushranger Huh that's interesting. Thank you for the explanation. Have a great day Sir.
