I saw a bare knuckle boxer recommend gardening gloves years ago, but he would turn them inside out because the outside is softer and less likely to rip your skin.
I remember when I was 18 I hit the 100lb bag (all sand) until I bled and kept going. I know there's better ways, but I built some calluses during those months of training. It came to a point where I wouldn't bleed anymore.
yea esp as a beginner or starting out, i think its good to go bare knuckle a little on the bags just to toughen up your knuckles and hands. If you always have gloves on from the beginning, you gonna have soft hands
That doesnt happen lol i used leather work gloves for the past twenty years sweating all day fixing barbed wire fences i never had that happen before lol
Technique and cleanness of your hit closes that gap, ideally you only want to tense up fully at the last second seeing as you can only accelerate gradually. Feeling peak tension early means you're exerting max force when your body isn't fully aligned with the target like you want it to be on impact, so your later tension is a little wasted on correcting the course of your punch instead of adding on to it like if you got progressively more tense as you got into the rigid structure you want to behind your punch at the moment of impact. It's like if you throw a yo-yo down too hard, even if you pull up hard too, you can't redirect the force to make it climb back up the string, BUT if you throw it gently, THEN pull up hard, the rotational and the linear forces work together and it comes back with speed.
Learning how to relax is what upped my punch power. Relax, non tensted extension gives the arm speed. Speed + proper skeletal connection = power transfer into enemy. The weight of my fat meaty arms is just the cherry on top.
Another thing that helps me with fist and wrist is to do fist push-ups or holds. Alignment is good, I just squeeze my hand to make a fist. Sometimes you want palm strikes or open hand so you csn mix it up. Good tips, good channel too!
Every time I see punches thrown, I like to imagine I am being punched with them, and trying to dodge the punches coming. It's free training without the consequences of being hit, and that faint into the uppercut at 0:53 and then you repeat it, but with a different tempo. They both landed clean on me, good job Shane.
Wrist positioning is the most important part of fist health, before even learning any boxing I taught myself the line up my wrist correctly and now I don’t have to think about it and it’s come in handy when trying to learn/focus on other parts of technique
Wish I was taught the wrist positioning and knuckle placement mechanics when I started in the boxing gym, the ligaments in my left wrist got torn up when I was landing punches wrong on the heavy bag. Ya live and ya learn
@@Jerry-vg2sm I don’t even go to a boxing gym haha! I just walked across my house and would imagine myself punching an object while focusing on my wrist for about a month before it was instinctive
@Someone Junior the slight bend also helps line up and land with the first 2 knuckles, the only 2 knuckles with suffucient support running throughout the arm, the radius and ulna bones
I've been training bare knuckles for probably 30 years. This is fine if you are punching Bob or a punching bag, but if you are punching a person bare knuckle, this is how you break your fingers or your wrist. For maximum safety, you need to impact with the knuckle of your ring finger. This will enable you to land your punch with three knuckles instead of one, which will distribute the impact across those three knuckles so you don't crush the knuckle of your middle finger and it will prevent your wrist from rolling. Also, when you punch above your shoulder you should use a vertical fist, otherwise you will hit with the second knuckles -on your finger and not your knuckle ridge. This is called "punching along the power line". Referred to Jack Dempsey's book championship boxing for a full explanation.
God dam you still have lighting speed. Glad to see you’re still doing it and growing ( construction going on 👍🏻) Oh can we call it farming gloves - sounds cooler. Please tell Pop Zeke said hi.
Lol the gloves remind me of our after school fights in high school. We wore our gloves from shop class because when the cops would show up to break it up they'd look at our hands to see who's been fighting.
I bare knuckle because unlike most people I do know how to make a fist and dont have to worry about hurting myself while i hit a heavy bag, also since I was 8 years old learning mixed martial arts i was taught pain is weakness leaving the body, reason why nowadays my body is so conditioned that I don't know pain, like for instance my gallbladder almost ruptured, I wasn't in pain nor anything like the normal person, I just had a mild discomfort and decided to get it checked out, it was so bad i died on the operating table and was thankfully brought back, doctors had me under observation in the hospital for a couple days after my surgery to make sure that everything was to par, so covering my hands after so many years of hitting a heavy bag wouldn't even be an option anymore because it truly doesn't bother me, ive opened my knuckles so many times it's like another day in the office, also the main reason that your hands are wrapped before putting on the gloves is because most people don't know how to throw a punch, it's not just to protect the hands, that's what the gloves themselves are for, the wrap is to protect them from hurting themselves 🤣🤣🤣
Best way to build hands of stone without risking injury to knuckles. Slowly and softly build you’re way up by focusing on bottom of heavy bag where all the weight is
I believe it's much easier to gauge power level when one has acquired a certain knowledge of the strength of their individual muscle groups through training, be it Calisthenics or weight lifting. Like 10% would be bicep power in the form of a jab, cranked up to 20% with the Delts engaged for hooks and 25% for uppercuts using the triceps ,then 30-40%% with Lats and Rhomboids for throwing Hard Rights, and so on with the core and leg power. Real Kaioken ×10 type ish lol man.
Old school bare knuckle boxers used to punch with a vertical wrist. The reason why boxers today turn their wrists inwards is because when gloves were introduced to boxing, it became harder to cut your opponent, so they figured out if you punch someone with a glove and twists at the last split second, the leather from the glove with stick to the skin and rip it open. But in street fighting it’s best for someone to throw a straight punch with a vertical fist, as this will provide you with the most wrist stability and also make it easier to land with the two largest knuckles.
Do you mean leather work gloves vs garden gloves? I usually see the brown fabric gloves for garden stuff. The thinner gloves will help the range, also strengthen hands and wrists since you have to pay attention more vs thick gloves
Wish I knew this about wearing gardening or football gloves before my knuckles got scared up. I did hapkido and we practiced bare knuckle on the bobs. Then when I transitioned to muay thai I got a heavy bag made out of canvas and tore my knuckles up 😂
The impact gloves are useless in a real fight.. the padding is minimal and there is zero protection to your 4th and 5th metacarpels.. learned from personal experience that due to the chaos of a street fight especially one involving more than 2 combatants, it is all too easy for even trained fighters to land a stupid punch- downward hook- on the wrong location- the top of the cranial crown- at the wrong angle- the typical boxers fracture last two knuckles made contact instead of the first two- and BAM! You just lost a knuckle and now require surgery to fix your hand.. I now have my power hand severely limited in strength and dexterity and cannot throw it with nearly the same ferocity as before- it's still knock out capable but only in gloves God forbid I throw it bare with poor form its guaranteed to break again
