They kinda change his personality in the later seasons. How can he say he doesn’t like the decorations cloth for the tables yet when we first meet him he likes the plain o’l unfinished dress. Plus he gets a lot of sass unlike in his first meet where he is just genuinely kind hearted. For crying out loud he hangs with those two canterlot snobs we saw in sweet & elite. I’m guessing pony life did him wrong because the writers only looked at the newer seasons. Plus it’s the only thing that they had more context to about his character.

I will say this as a defender of him, he is completely justified in acting the way he did in season 9 and in princess spike. In both episodes he was disrespected by not letting him do his regular jobs, I'd understand him getting uppity about someone telling him he doesn't have to do his job cause his 'boss' is doing it for him. Even then at the ending of the episode he does help twilight see that it's ok to ask for help. So his personality of humbleness in the second season is still there.
though I can't defend pony life lmao they completely changed him there.

I adored him, I still do, to a certain extent, but I can't look over his decay. He was so kind, so gentle, so able to adjust. The first time we meet him, he is mysterious, as we don't know who he really is. Is he like the other snooty ponies, or is he different? We get to see, he is actually able to just see a pony positively, no matter where they come from, how they look, what they're made of, or at least I think that was supposed to be what we were supposed to see. He could have easily gone and ridiculed Rarity and her friends when he found out what really was true and what wasn't. He had the status to go ahead and no one would have cared, he is so high in status, everyone would have agreed. Still, he didn't. He went ahead and stated, that he actually liked them and the work Rarity has done. People say, he did it to safe his own a** but that wasn't necessary. He really would have gotten away if he had just gone and insulted them or anything, those ponies around him suck up to him so much, no one would have thought of him in a bad way. The best episode for Fancy Pants.
Season 5 Princess Spike... I don't like how he went ahead, asking for privileges, but thinking about it today, as I was a bit younger when I saw it first, I can see where he came from. He was super chill about it, so I think for that episode he is fine. People seem to think the issue lies with him getting so upset, but this is the only time when I actually see why, because all these issues could have been avoided, if Spike hadn't thought so much about him self. Up until everything went down hill, he was really kind, and after he was just as much, being the first to help Spike, after the Chrystal statue had collapsed.
Season 9 is the worst, next to pony life. So self-centered and rude. I could scream! And it's harsh to say it like that, and I saw your answer to someone, but I stand by my grounds. He was so gentle before in different episodes, able to take such things with ease. I would have understood an irritation after a while, but what I thought would be more like him, is him just being confused when told he isn't needed and if a bit miffed, able to see, okay, they said they can handle, I'll leave then. To come in any time again to offer a hoof, like he did, was what I thought would have been fine, but he was so rude, so pouty. I mean, who is he? A foal? He was once the most understanding out of all the Canterlot snobs, and that time around, he was just as bad. How dare one not see how important he is?! Now he will pout and be rude, make all these faces, being so impatient with the future ruler and instead of immediately making clear, that the princesses would use their help too if they had been there, he waits and makes all these unnecessarily rude remarks, treats the mane 6 like idiots. Who is he?
Pony life, he completely decayed, having been so self-centered, except for the moment he saw rarity and thought she's cute. Fancy Pants, best pony, but for sure not through the whole series

Okay, not the point of your comment but the problems in that episode were not caused by Spike thinking about himself. He was trying to think about Twilight and keep her from being woken up and was being short-sighted about it. And in other scenes he thought about himself and those scenes never had any actual consequence. The end of the episode just blames everything going wrong those inconsequential scenes. How was Spike thinking about himself when he's trying to keep Twilight from being disturbed?

​@@crocoshark4097 Simply since he first did think about Twilight when he asked everyone to quiet down, till he realized he could say anything as long as he said Twilight said so and then went and got the list of what Twilight was still in need of doing, in order to do it himself. Nothing that was asked of him, mind you. He did it out of his own selfish reasons, because he liked to have others listen to him. He is to blame, because on that list, Twilight was supposed to look for the construction worker to make sure the work is in progress, which he did, but denied the worker to continue, a tiny bit because of Twilight maybe, but mostly because he could say no. That is made clear, that he didn't do it out of good intentions anymore, because Cadence asks him right after, if he's sure, the decisions he made were purely out of good interest for Twilight and not his selfish reasons, which he got nervous about. So yeah, he was definitely thinking about himself and at least at that point he is to be blamed for it.

@@Princess_of_cute Okay, but that was still a continuation of his decision to keep everyone quiet, which is something he did before the power of speaking on Twilight's behalf got to his head. The disaster was also caused by his preventing of the trimming of the dragon sneeze trees, which was purely a decision he made when he was just trying to keep everyone quiet.

@@crocoshark4097 Yes and yet, again, he was asked by Cadence, if he's sure those decisions, he said were made out of Twilight's interests, especially since he only came back to that guy, because it was on Twilight's list of duties, were not his own selfish decisions. If he hadn't come back, which wouldn't have happened, if he hadn't selfishly taken the list of duties from Twilight, in order to further have his words heard, then you could actually say, the selfish decisions he made, didn't have any impact, but the decision to keep the construction on the pipe at halt was because he was being selfish, not because he had the interests of Twilight at heart.
