I'm so surprised you noticed Magpie Electricals! Not many do.
@@chrisonskyy Is it literally just a reference/Easter egg?
@@dreddlockz8364 Yes. The name/company dates back to Classic Who.
@@mouseketeeryAFAIK it first appeared in "The Idiot's Lantern" from 2006, but the name has since also been put in things like missing episode animations, audio plays featuring classic era Doctors etc.
@@mouseketeery wait was it in classic who originally? i thought the classic who references to magpie electricals were done after the idiots lantern, in animated reconstructions of missing episodes? or are there other original episodes it was in before then?
I don't know much, but I do know Doctor Who. But compared to Jules, I now know nothing.
It's worth noting that Amy didn't involuntarily forget She pushed the "forget" button knowingly but instantly had her memory wiped so didn't remember putting her hand there
Also it didn't happen super fast as we were shown, that's just a fast-forward so we don't catch the spoilers.
I know that this isn't everyone's favorite, but it's always been a personal fave of mine. Watching him go from angry at the humans in front of him, to shocked he didn't think of the solution himself and then proud of Amy for seeing what he couldn't... I get emotional every time. ❤
I loved it!! The starwhale was so incredibly beautiful, and I adored the compassion shown for it by Amy - comparing it to the Doctor was perfection 💜
The episode kinda drags in parts with some weird pacing, which I think is why a lot of people don't like it. But personally the positives FAR outweigh the negatives, hell the ending alone outweighs any criticisms for me
How is Bro 13Days when it only came out 20 minutes 💀💀💀💀
I just think this episode's placement is wrong cause i do think if it was later in the series it might work better because the dynamic with the doctor and Amy here feels like it doesnt work as the second episode

I love how Amy understands the Doctor so quickly, even though she's only ever known him for a few hours, spread over decades of her life. He is, in her eyes, a true fairy tale character brought to life, and she understands his story very quickly.
Magpie Electricals is a little Easter egg that pops up every now and then. It's funny to imagine that a tiny little electrical shop in Muswell Hill would eventually become an intergalactic corporation (especially since it was a one-man business and the one man died in 1952)...
I love the fact that the doctor couldnt see the resemblance between himself and the starwhale because he doesnt see himself as an old, kind man. But people around him do. Even amy, that doesnt know him for long, could see it.
He's not an old, kind man though. The Doctor sees the reality of himself that no one else ever can. He's a good man but what he does is rarely out of kindness. The people around him humanise him but they mistake what he really is.
@@nightshade7240 why not out of kindness? He usually does it out of kindness. He could land on a planet thats in the middle of a war and then just *leave*
Amy has known him for 14 years. Just hasn’t met him often during that time. She has known him much longer then he has known her.
@@BruhsCookieJar she met him once as a child. Thats not knowing a person. And you can see it in how she is surprised in this episode about certain things he does.
@@Ss15996 obviously she does t know him well. I’m not using “known” like they are siblings or best friends. However, there is a huge difference between in meeting someone today (that’s the doctors experience) and meeting someone one time as a child who so deeply affected you that you create toys, drawings and whole worlds about them for years after. Madame de pompadour also met him as a child, then for brief moments throughout her life. She felt as though she had known the doctor forever, so she said. Ame is similar. She has known the doctor all her life. What’s interesting is that Rory meets the doctor 12 years later in his and Amy’s timeline, for the doctors point of view, he met them the same day… the day he regenerated.
Yay for noticing Magpie Electricals and remembering the name of that episode. I think I can speak for most of your audience that we love that you get so emotional. You are so right, this may be a new Doctor and new companion but we bring all the history of Dr Who with us while we're watching the newbies bed in and that feeds into how we react.
Magpie obviously prospered after his tangle with the Doctor !
I think Amy’s confidence in the beast below being kind is because she was a chill herself when she met the doctor, and he was kind to her.
"I know I get easily emotional."
Yes, I know. It's why you're my favourite person to watch react to Doctor Who. In the same way The Doctor takes a companion with him so he can see the universe again through their eyes and share in their wonder and amazement, I get to re-feel that too watching you see Doctor Who for the first time. I've seen the episodes so many times, much like the Doctor has seen much of the universe many times, it is better when shared. ❤
That's a great comment, and exactly how I feel about our girl !!!
I want to see reactors cry at the slightest thing!
Never apologise for getting emotional watching shows or movies. Even though it’s only your second episode with Matt Smith, it’s your 5th season with the Doctor and it’s a credit to Matt and yourself that you’re able to see past the new face and see the character that the Doctor is and how much the decision he was making was breaking his hearts.
Im a 22 year old dude and yet the "unable to stand there a watch children cry", and "very old and very kind" moments can still make me cry like an actress.
Big kudos for spotting the Magpies Electricals sign! And for remembering the episode it originated from!!! We’ll make a Doctor Who nerd out of you yet! X
I actually was proud of me for that one 🤣🤣
@@julesreacts love it!
Steven Moffat wanted the episode to give Amy the opportunity to save the day, preventing the Doctor from making an understandable but terrible mistake, and thereby firmly establish herself as a worthy occupant of the TARDIS.
Yep, it's a rare thing for Moffat to place the emphasis on the female companion/character in his stories... hashtag motherissues... hashtag strong female characters dominate all his stories to the point where clara is seriously considered to be a secret dr regeneration... hashtag tedious and predictable
@@space1999 ... It's not really rare, the man love centering his companions. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean.
@@CarouselTwonique he likes strong women in his stories....
@@space1999 I mean, I'd more say he likes complicated women than strong ones but what's the issue?
@@CarouselTwonique who said there's an issue? The original comment was how Moffat wrote this story to highlight amy and give her a chance to shine, I just pointed out he didn't... he does it all the time.... my only issue is the predictability of it.... its a little boring.
Underrated episode this one - does a great job of showing what Amy brings to the table as a companion.
It's the first example of the darkness that lies just under the surface of Eleven's personality peeking out.
I could see flashes of the ninth doctor in 11. This could have been a ninth doctor script.
Let's face it, this is very similar to The End of The World. New companion on her first TARDIS trip is thrust far into the future. Even though series 5 is my favourite, it has to be said that Billie Piper did a better job of connecting with the audience in that episode and acting like she'd genuinely time-travelled for the first time in her life.
So that's why I love this episode. Yeah, I think you're right
I love that moment seeing how The Doctor absolutely needs a companion and someone to remind him he has more options.
Magpie Electrical's appearance is called an "Easter Egg" in TV series and movies, because you have to hunt for them. Sometimes they are put in just for fun, or to reference a past event in the show. Other times they foreshadow an upcoming item later in the episode or later episodes. The crack in the starship shown at the end is the latter.
If there is one thing I love about Matt Smith's acting is his range and intensity. He can go from humor to intense on a moments notice.
I'll never forget that hug scene. Gets me crying every time. The Doctor... so very long live, so lonely. Cannot leave children to cry. The compassion.
Amy questioning him about being a parent and him not answering hurts too :
Call her Amy, but then Amelia when it's serious! That's what the Doctor does lol
The magpie electricals is such a good catch, it did first show up in the idiots lantern but they kept the brand around for a long time, basically any time you see an electric device with a label on it, its magpie, it's how the production team got around brand names on things like TVs with a cool in world Easter egg, one that stands out in my memory is when the master blows up Martha's house w the bomb on the back of the TV you can see a magpie label on it, there's compilations of all of them on here, it's so cool
I sob through the third act of this episode. Even watching it broken up with your reaction. I SOBBED!
Moffat does an AMAZING job at writing stories that Matt Smith and Karen Gillan just shine in. Their acting is so compelling and they drag you in so fast.
🥰🥰 it was such a moving episode! I wasn't expecting it to be so emotional but it was just beautiful. The Starwhale is incredible 💜
This had almost Philip K. Dick vibes, with this idea of knowledge and its rejection and the decision to face reality. And a Doctor that showed us clearly why he _needs_ a companion. And so much internal reference.
Been remarked: not everyones favorite episode, many don't connect to it, especially on the first time watching. But it is so very very Doctor Who, and a wonderful start for the "real" journey of Amy Pond, for which she had to wait so long.
Clever, cerebral writing, for sure. But episode 2 really needed more of a "Rose Tyler" vibe. As much as I love Amy, and she is a brave character, she's just too casual here on her first trip into time and space and feels disconnected to the audience.
This is basically a version of
LeGuin's The Ones that Walk Away from Omelas (1973)
The recording from Liz 10 for herself is quite emotional for me, too. That's when I start crying in this one.
matt smith is so goofy but really serious when theres bad stuff going on, oh and the "prime minister" guy with the white hair and glasses was also in a scary kids program called "the demon headmaster" and it was awesome
"Nobody human has anything to say to me!!"
Shivers!!!❤❤❤❤❤
I do like how angry this doctor can get, he can carry so much emotion just so few words
An angry Doctor is a good Doctor 😅
18:23 Remember how Rose felt when 10 first flashed into existence out of the regeneration? Didn't take her long to fall in love.
You can't not love the charm of Matt and Karen. They have such a wonderful chemistry.
One thing I love about Steven Moffat's writing for Doctor Who and his overall concept for the Doctor is that he is a "magical wizard" of sorts. I'm not a huge fantasy guy, but due to the nature of so many of modern Who's stories the fantasy layer actually helps insulate the show from criticism. RTD had more of a mad cap science fiction tone to his run, which worked in its own way, but, for me, I think that made some of the more outlandish things stick out much more than they will under this run (No spoilers!)
I've heard people say this episode would fit better later, but I don't think so. In this episode we're relying on Amy's fresh eyes to see things that The Doctor doesn't. The doctor basically B.S.s her a bit at the start with the "stay out of trouble" and "don't get involved" thing which sets up "unless there are children crying" pay off. You can't put this episode later and have that make any sense. It's Amy's inexperience and, in a way, her innocence that allows her to see what The Doctor in his pain, can't see.
Amy was describing The Doctor at the end, and the two lines that actually reveal the most about The Doctor's pain
Doctor: "You couldn't know how it would react."
Amy: "You couldn't."
That's still the 10th Doctor in there. He's still in pain and grieving from all the loss we saw back in "Journey's End." From that point to his regeneration, he never had a proper companion. He just ran around from place to place, and here he is.
The anger when he shouted "Nobody human has anything to say to me today!" was when Smith clicked with me as the Doctor. Not sure why, just a moment of like "there it is, the old man thats seen so much"
Ten was very mild, so it's nice to see a bit of strong emotion with Eleven, even if we don't see it very often.
@@Scripture-Manthat’s what makes 11’s moments of anger hit harder for me.
With 9 and 10 they’re still at that PTSD stage, so their anger is more frequent and after a while, it becomes a little desensitising.
However 11 is post recovery stage, and has more or less moved on, so with him being angry less often hits harder, when he’s angry you know it
How did you not burst to tears with Amy's speech? I cry each time. Hahaha
Lots of things to pay attention to in this era, Jules. And most of it all ties up beautifully. Looking forward to seeing you piece things together.
I'll try my best to piece it together! Looking forward to the challenge 😅
Very old and very kind and the last of his kind.
The TARDIS is also very old. Just sayin'.
@@Scripture-Manvalid. She is also old, kind and the last of her kind.
The escaped fish has a name.
His name is Jim. Jim the Fish ;)
The Doctor had a kinship with the Star Whale in the sense that they were both the last of their kind, he has said before that his human companions do more that give him companionship, they help him connect to humanity and see things from a 3rd person perspective. In a way they keep him grounded which is why Donna told him last season do not travel alone he needs someone to keep him in check.
There's so much I could say about 11's performance. But, I'll just say that the emotional layers are just so compelling. Keep up the great reactions!
That scene with the 11th Doctor showing his dark scene and anger was the moment for me when Matt Smith truly became The Doctor. He really can show young and old and happy and childish and dark at the same time
To me the biggest difference between the tenth and eleventh doctors is that the tenth doctor made himself so very human, whereas the eleventh doctor is unquestionably alien. He really feels like a fish out of water and I love it!
"This isn't going to be big on dignity!" *adjusts bow tie*
You don’t need to feel ashamed of yourself for getting emotional, I’m a grown man and I still teared up watching your End of Time reactions.
The Shakespeare Code: Queen Elizabeth I is furious with The Doctor and demands his head.
The End of Time: The Doctor alludes to an off screen encounter with Elizabeth I and makes a vague family-friendly reference to "her nickname" not being accurate.
The Beast Below: 9:20-9:30 Liz 10 confirms The Doctor was a "Bad Bad Boy" (and Jules face at 9:31 😆)
You get easily emotional… _NEVER CHANGE Juliette!_
I've noticed a few of the Dr reactors are emotional.
I get emotional watching it but never that much.
This doctor and companion combination is my favourite. Absolutely love them both and the episodes they’re in and the storylines they get are just fantastic!
Morgan [on screen]: "You are here because you want to know the truth about this starship . . " Every time I see this actor, I get a surge of emotion and of loss. He looks exactly - and I mean exactly - like late friend of mine, Peter Hughes, who passed away in 2017. He also watched Doctor Who. This must have been like looking in a mirror. Also very fond, as I, of Surrealism and Shakespeare. A rare combination. Ex Navy man, then a company director retired to be a bookseller and book searcher. He also directed am dram. Miss you very much old friend.
This is the first episode we get to see a bit of Matt Smith darker side of the doctor
I have seen this episode repeatedly, and as such, I started to realize they must have cut out a lot before air because there are quite a few things that just aren't explained. Like, what are the smilers? And the "winder divisions", they all have wind up keys, but it's never explained what they're for. I have assumed they wind up the smilers, but that is never stated in the episode. It makes me think there was a whole subplot with them that got removed.
Also, kudos for the eagle eye spot of magpie electric! I only found it after an embarrassing number of viewings 😅
In my headcanon, they have some connection to the clockwork repair droids from The Girl in the Fireplace. They finally figured out compatibility.
It’s nice to watch another person become a Whovian. Welcome! I started my Who journey in 1975 with Jon Pertwee. 😮
Oh nice, you've been into it for a while 💜
"I get easily emotional". Don't worry about it, Jules. There's really nothing better than showing your true emotions. So it's all good. Besides, you're not the only one who reacts this way. Hundreds of whovians around the world feel emotional about many moments from the show.
P.S. Not a spoiler, BUT the crack on the side of the spaceship is the same shape as the crack in Amy's room. Keep in mind what 11th Doctor said in the first episode: "The crack isn't in the wall, it's everywhere."
before the doctor returned he was just a childhood experience of one day. she had held on hope but was still living her life. having the doctor appear challenged everything for her
Season 5 and 6 were some of my favorite adventures... I'm so glad you've arrived!
The moments with the Doctor & Amy where she compares him to the Star Whale make me emotional EVERY SINGLE TIME. It’s beautifully written, acted, and of course, accentuated by Murray Gold’s beautiful score.
I think this episode gets overlooked a lot, and I admit that as much as I adore this season, I tend to overlook it too. Yet, every time I watch it I'm reminded that it's actually a beautiful episode.
That shot of Amy floating outside of the TARDIS in her nightie is iconic and one of my favourite moments of the e tire Eleventh Doctor era. I think it really encapsulates the vibe of Season Five - it's a celebration of the pure joy and childlike wonder that this show has to offer. The nightie even gives it all a Peter Pan and Wendy feel.
This episode also establishes one of my favourite aspects of the Eleventh Doctor - his connection with children. We've seen glimpses of it before, but I think Eleven works better with children than any other Doctor.
The mystery and moral dilemma are the heart of the episode are also extremely fascinating and the scene where the Doctor snaps at Amy is intense. It showcases the dichotomy of Eleven so well - he can be a ridiculous child one minute but an ancient and vengeful force of nature the next. Despite Matt Smith's youth he can wear those centuries of pain with 100% authenticity.
Nice job catching the Magpie Electricals sign too, I never noticed until I read about it somewhere and it wasn't until a rewatch last year that I actually saw it. It's popped up as an Easter egg in a few other places too.
Now, fun fact: This episode takes some cues from a couple of Classic Who stories - 'The Ark' and 'The Ark in Space', which established the idea of humanity leaving Earth due to solar flares.
Finally, I forgot to mention this last week, but here's some additional information about Eleven's costume. Originally they tried to go for another trendy, modern look, much like what the Ninth and Tenth Doctors had worn. However, Matt Smith had been watching some Classic Who for research and fell in love with the Second Doctor, who wore a bow tie, so he suggested he should try one too. Steven Moffat was hesitant because he thought that was too "old Doctor Who", but ultimately loved the finished look. Matt also took a degree of inspiration from the Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton, for his performance.
I'm glad you enjoyed Eleven and Amy's first full outing together Jules!
Well done for noticing magpie electricals! I didn't on my first watch
I love this episode. Didn't love it the first time but on rewatches it's such a powerful building episode for Smith's doctor.
it's been a while, so I hope you don't mind me reiterating.
You won’t see the story on the show but in expanded media it is said that after Magpie’s death in this episode, Timothy goes on and continues running the store. Because of his brilliance he manages to renovate the humble little electronic shop into a multimedia empire that lives on for centuries hundreds of years after his death. Timothy absolutely gets his happy ending. See if you are able to spot the company logo going forward. Every doctor has at least one call out to it.
4:18 glad you noticed.
Series 5 is a masterpiece
To respond to your "wish", I ALWAYS "like" (i.e. LOVE 😍😍😍😍) your reactions, but I like The Doctor and Amy's relationship too. This is going to be ... as Tony The Tiger says, a Grrrreat! ride.
For me this is one my favourites. Back when i first watched it, this was the episode that sold me on the new doctor.
I always think of the little girl as Amelia, and the adult as Amy - which also makes it easier to differentiate the two.
Hi jules- i think the doctor’s decision was inferior not only because it was exploitative, but also because he allowed his bigotry against nonverbal sentient beings to overlook the evidence that the star whale would not destroy the ship. The biggest piece of evidence is the affection the star whale continues to show the children even while being tortured by the doctor. If the star whale refuses to kill the kids while being tortured, there is no reason she will do so after being given agency. Also, he didn’t critique Liz from referring to the star whale as an “it” and for assuming the star whale came like a miraculous act of natural luck rather than the volition of a rescuer. The Doctor was about to throw away his entire identity, and Amy saved him from the self-destruction borne from moral corruption. Preserving our integrity, compassion and justice is worth taking risks for, in some cases even dying for. We dishonor those we seek to save if to do so requires unwholesome means.
"I don't like kids sent to hell" yhea, ik the feeling... I mean their place is in some nice coal mine or right in front of a Dalek
So glad you're enjoying this season. Seasons five and eight are my favorite Nu-Who seasons and I'm excited to see your reactions to some of the great stuff to come!
"Of course you're not scared. Box falls out of the sky, man falls out of the box, so you know what I think... that must be one hell of a scary crack in your wall."
I don't think the Doctor was mad at her humanness. He got so angry at her for trying to make a decision for him.
You also don't have to apologise for your emotions. As someone with a disorder that disconnects me from mine, it's always fascinating to watch how people react to situations that I have no reaction to. Also I will take getting emotional and the genuineness of your responses over the fake responses or over the top responses I've seen from others. Keep being you because you are beautiful and I always look forward to seeing you react to more episodes of Doctor Who. I'd ask you to react to Stargate but with ten seasons you'd be here til we were both old and grey (though I already am, so there is that :D).
Oh thank you!! I'm so glad to hear you're enjoying the videos. I love that you can view them in a different light due to my reactions, that is so good to hear 💜
And hey, I've got some grey hairs too 🤣 you're not alone!
One of my absolute favorite Doctor Who episodes. One of the few times that a companion outdoes the Doctor and man what great performances from Smith and Gillan.
Its an episode that always leaves me weeping
You didn’t think you would be so emotionally invested so soon in the series? 😅you’re in the exemplary era of the new showrunner now- the. Incomparable Stephen Moffat
Is in the house
the crack from Amy's wall now on the side of starship UK. Is it following them or just everywhere all at once?
I'm not sure yet, but it feels like it's everywhere at once!
I love The Beast Below, it's a really underrated second story!
I love seeing "early Amy" / season 5 Amy go all "dear in headlights" with her eyes whenever something happens. Which is kinda funny to me as the show more than once makes a joke about Karen Gillian being a "leg girl" so to speak (one quote being straight up; "that woman is MADE of legs!") but to me her most recognizable feature are the eyes for sure.
Heck, if you go and rewatch the S4's Fires of Pompei (where she makes an appearance) you'll INSTANTLY recognize as one of the sisters due her eyes.
I dunno, Karen just nails playing the emotion where she's needing to represent both curiosity, tad bit afraid, but also determined all at once. And that helps a lot in making her Doctors companion.
...Aaaaaas for the actual episode itself though...
Yeah, not gonna lie, I'm among the group that finds this one of the weaker "first trip" episodes where the new companion has to earn their stripes. And by that I mean it's not that I HATE this one or anything, it just ain't Fires of Pompei. ...which in all honesty might not be the most fair comparison, but it's my favorite one and the one I unavoidably compare these.
At least the ending is a sweet one.
Everybody lives, Doctor. Just this once. EVERYBODY LIVES!
The glass of water scene... was my "moment" when I felt like I was watching the Doctor. I hadn't felt it in the previous episode. But that did it for me.
Eleven is a lot of things. He is quick to anger, but quick to joy. He can be far more manic than the ninth doctor. Matt and Karen can both evoke powerful emotions at the drop of a hat, so expect to be emotional easily when watching them act. I never noticed the Magpie shop thing before. It must be a little Easter egg sort of thing. Amy does have some series cold feet about marrying poor, sweet Rory.
When I see that crack appear, I think of the song lyrics below.
"Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in." Leonard Cohen...Anthem
I think you are the first reactor to recognise Magpie Electricals, and the episode. I already liked your reactions, and now I like you even more
Aww thank you!! I appreciate that 💜
I’m all caught up can’t wait for the next episode 🙂👍
Hi Jules!! Loved this one!!👏👏🙌🙌👋👋👍👍💖💖
This is a really interesting episode especially with Matt Smith as the new Doctor and recently watched a documentary about Doctor Who
and all of the actors who played the Doctor from the first to the current actor and it was really awesome, have a great rest of the week
and take care my friend Juliette.📺🐈⬛🇦🇺:).
I don't know which documentary you saw, but for the record the very BEST series of Doctor Who documentaries (which I highly recommend) is here on UA-cam, made by "Clever Dick Films". He's made documentaries about all the Doctors and they're all excellent.
I knew I was in synch with Amy starting with this episode when I cracked a joke about the Scottish having their own spaceship a few minutes before she did. Or I’m one step ahead of the writers.
Yeah, this is basically a New Earth episode and it’s a good one. Good way for the audience to get in groove with both Eleven and Amy and get set for the adventures to come. Oh and yes, I’m sure that crack that was on the spaceship hull is a complete coincidence and not the least bit relevant to anything.
On we go then!
This is why Amy is my favorite companion. The Doctor was so mad at her that he was going to abandon her after one adventure, but she still figured out what happened to the Star Whale before him. It'd weird that The Doctor never considers using the Tardis. There weren't 3 options there were 4. Evacuate the people with the Tardis. He has infinite space in that thing, yet freeing the star whale while also evacuating the people never crossed his mind.
I do like the vintage designs around the place - the magpie signs, the BBC television fonts. The little girl on screen being a homage to the BBC test card F image.
The Monarch & the UK bureaucracy (Civil Service) should not influence the vote BUT they all have a vote, including the Queen.
Correct, Civil Sevice & the Armed Forces Legally work for the Crown (King), not the Prime Minster. The Civil Service are to collect tasks/ direction but cannot be fired by a people's representative.
Magpie is being used as a prop department signature but yes - it grew into a major electrical/electronic manufacturer/distributor.
Even RETROSPECTIVELY.😂 the future based animation for a Second Doctor story had a Magpie device. Audio: First Doctor in early 1963 went to a Magpie distributor for TARDIS parts.
When Ten returned to the Ood at the end of time, he said he'd married Elizabeth and she was no longer the Virgin Queen. I don't particularly love it as the reason she was angry in "The Shakespeare Code," but they haven't really retconned it either.
Magpie Electricals becomes a running gag. The tardis console also has a ME tag on it
Awesome video as always dude cannot wait till the next one. In all the times i've watched this episode i never caught that Magpies Electrics easter egg! Good eye 😜 have a good rest of your week!
I really love the ending of this one for sure!
Starship UK is an interesting if slightly silly idea, I love that each of the buildings on the whale's back is one of the UK's counties! Incidentally I wrote a short 2-page physics paper on the amount of rocket fuel needed to lift the *actual* UK into space while I was at university. The numbers were... not realistically achievable, so it's a good thing a whale showed up to help! And I do love a good Space Whale, they're always a fun sci-fi trope whether it's in Star Wars or Doctor Who!
Amy figured out the Doctor's nature so quickly! Really old and really kind. Heartwarming stuff, even though The Doctor isn't without his dark side.
Oh, and *incredible* job noticing the Magpie Electricals easter egg! You've got a sharp eye and a sharper memory!
The Magpie Electricals thing was such a great sight to see! It really tickled me, a lovely nod back to the past!
What a cool idea for a physics paper though! Haha! Awesome 👌
@@julesreacts It was part of a module where students work in teams to produce several 2-page papers on the physics of anything they choose, and then each team reviews and edits the other teams' papers for a journal that's published online!
As you can imagine there are all kinds of articles about different things, from Doctor Who to Batman and beyond!
"O wad some power the giftie gie us,
To see oorsels as ithers see us"
Steven Moffat maybe remembering his Robert Burns in this episode :). Amy does the one thing for 11 that he can't do for himself - sees him from the outside, as others see him and so sees the crucial, lifesaving parallel.
Good second ep IMO, cements who 11 _and_ Amy are and also lets Matt Smith add some different layers to his Doctor, showing us his anger and even contempt for abusers.
Objectively speaking "The Beast Below" is not one of the best episodes of "Doctor Who", but personally for me it became one of my favorites, just a comfort episode to re-watch from time to time.
I LOVE THIS EPISODE SO MUCH!!!!! It makes me cry every time💖💖💔💔💖💖
It’s so hard to believe that I’m looking at Nebula and Daemon Targaryen now.
Hey Jules, guess what?
"Gotcha" 🤗🥰
A young David Ajala (Book from Star Trek: Discovery)!
I was Hoping for this to continue.
So Lesss Goooo
I enjoy this episode, mostly because it so reminds me of Terry Prattchet’s Discworld, I have a suspicion that the writers had him on their minds when they wrote this episode, especially when they talk about a “spaceship that could never fly”, which to my thoughts sounds rather close to “in an astral plane that was never meant to fly.” Or at least it’s a close concept as well, flat world or city on the back of a fishy space creature, how could one not think of Discworld.
Side note: Jules if you get a chance I would recommend the Discworod series, there’s an insane amount of books in it, but they’re fantastic. If that seems too daunting, there are at least 3 classic point and click adventure games based off of his books you might enjoy.
Oooh Joe, I remember trying to read Terry Pratchet when I was younger, but perhaps I was too young as I didn't quite get it. I've always wanted to try again. Maybe I should 😊
Liz 10 was talking about the doctor files from Torchwood what you think the crack is Jules love to hear your take on that hope hear what you think later on
The chemistry
Good catch on the magpie electrics. Its not spoilers to tell you its just a reference, doesnt mean anything. Magpie electrics actually starts showing up every once in a while in the background
I'll have to keep an eye out for more!
The last one was the 11th doctors coming of age and this one was amy's
there are some mini-episodes, I forget the number but you can now watch the first one,
the mini-episodes are only a few minutes each, and can have spoilers but they are each set between some of the shows so it would be good to watch them in order. maybe there is a list of when they are set so you can watch them in order without getting spoilers but they are worth looking up.
She is doing the mini-episodes, and has already posted one. It looks to have been taken down and re-uploaded. You can find it off her main page, under Playlists - Doctor Who, and it should be down toward the bottom of the list - ReUpload Meanwhile in the Tardis.
Thank you, Tom 🤗💜 I'd forgotten to put the logo across the minisode so the BBC ended up getting to it after a few days of it being uploaded. To save from bothering people with another notification, I thought to just pop it in the playlist as unlisted. At least it's still there if people want to see it 😊
Great reactions from Jules, to this enthralling episode of New Who.
And we get just a small glimpse into the relationship between The Doctor and Amy.
Amy is a beloved companion for a reason. Even just in this episode she demonstrated that she saw more than the Doctor because she's not blinkered by the kind of thinking that only suggests three bad outcomes. There are little Easter eggs like Magpie Electricals scattered throughout this season. Also Matt Smith really showed his range in just two episodes and why he was a worthy successor. Though before Doctor Who, I'd never heard of him.
I don't know if you remember me telling you about the continuity of this show and the long running joke about Elizabeth the first in the Shakespeare Code episode.
The line from Liz 10 calling the Doctor a bad boy with Elizabeth the first adds to the long running joke and is a piece of the puzzle.
This line suggests an intimate assignation between the two.
But why was she so angry enough to call for his head?
I love The Beast Below! Such an underrated episode.
(Not a spoiler cos the episode takes place in 2024, but it is new season based)
There is a Magpie Electrical in the latest season of Doctor Who. It's a cool easter egg
