I came here looking for r/c tank gearbox methods, but your motor break in video you have done is excellent. You know what you are doing, you know how to explain it and you waste no words whatsoever. Even though not 100% what i'm looking for, does help with the motors. Great video, well done RCN.
Awesome tutorial. I've been going brushless lately, but I have an old brushed motor from my Rustler and it has turned to absolute crap power-wise lately, since I've been cleaning it with compressed air. I didn't realize I'm supposed to re-oil it. I used to run nitro so I don't know much about electric motors. Thanks so much!
Most people think WD40 is a lubricant. It's not, It's a penetrant. That's why you use it on rusty gates to get them to swing open without squeaking. After it penetrates the rust you should clean it off and put real oil or grease.
thanks guys! I just a beginner in the hobby, and I am already hooked because I can actually drift now! yea!! lol great vid, very helpful and straight forward. Such is the process itself. Haha
excellent tutorial thank you very much for this video this is going to help me with my speed runs feel free to check them out thanks again
I wish everyone did this before running them hard :/ Break-in is key as with any type of motor. Well done.
The very best video I’ve seen. I’m new to the sport and will gladly follow your lees. Thank you
One thing that he left out, something that is quite important, is to set the correct gear mesh when you re-attach your motor.
It does not need to be done but it helps a lot with the life of brushed motors so it will be the best thing for a brushed motor, yes break it in
Can I still do this even though I've run my summit? It's new, I've ran it maybe a total of one hour. And what method would you suggest?
Great way to stop chunks of dirt etc getting into your motor is to cover the motor with the toe of a pair of tights/pop socks, motor can still breathe and keep cool but stops a lot of debris getting in!
I did the wet with alcohol. motor: Toxic 17x2 by Carson modelsport. and I do it like every 5 to 6 runs. Well thnx to rcnightmare I got it right
thanx that really helped if you have a traxxas 12t 550 always break it in right
@RoyIniguez yes, we have a video on that.
Interesting. Been into RC for most of my life and never heard of breaking in an electric motor. Granted all my stuff is brushless. Only my sons trucks are brushed and his Stampede 2WD is going through 4-5 motors a year. I guess that's because I never break them in. Though he does like to run the truck in deep puddles so the motors do get submerged at times. LOL
ScarabChris lol my stampede is 3 years old and has the stock titan 12, it's rusty as hell, never greased, never broken in and still goes like new, I do not know why your sons motors break so frequently
Also the motor was never replaced and is the same one that came with the truck
nothin my friend have is e-maxx for about 6 years and he dont made the breakin process and it still working
@rcnightmare
ive broken one motor in using the wet method let it run on very fast for like 1-2 mins oiled the bearings and now it's got a short in the windings or sumn. One wire in the windings is shorted out so i'm getting it replaced and i dont want this to happen again so i'm doing a lil more research on how to properly break my new one in
LOL! Excellent! I sometimes use the water method to clean out stock, non openable, motors. Went to a club meeting without having time to work on my motor beforehand. So I connected it to my 3 cell running in pack with the motor in clubhouse the toilet!!! Hahahaha! I know plain water is not to be recommended, but what the heck? It duly turned the water black with carbon!!! Oops! Don't forget to flush!
always find your videos educational ...keep em comin bud
@jrevoman :) yea we like to mix it up, he helps on the shoots and driving as well..
New to R/C. Thanks for the very informative video. Read a bunch about Titan 550 motor burnout on some forums (sometimes after a few runs). If I follow this procedure how long should I expect one to last?
thank you for the very informative video. I was wondering why people keep saying break in the motor.
@traxxas5308 its kinf of personal prefrence, we like the wet version
what's "a long time?" Just curious.
@traxxxasdude15 thanks for the kind words.
@jrevoman yes that is him.
Actually the XL5 does have Low-voltage Detection.
Well done very straight forward.
You can do the water method with ANY brushed motor, including your Titan 12 turn 550.
I have had my boss 302 for about 9 months without breaking in the motor or doing anything to it and until now it runs FINE.
Im breaking in my Captains Curse thats coming soon.
What's an equivilent to the motor cleaner? I have no electric motor cleaner and wanted to know what are the chemical contents that are in that so i could find some similar household items that might work.
Jang form URC?
Thankx for the break-in tips...
Hi, u need to break in to simply clean the inside of your brushed motor and i suggest you a bit of wd40 spray to keep it clean but if you do this u should let it for a half hour to dry
@theeviloneohyes yea it really extends their life...
So use the dry method then rinse it with water? Also is there any way to repair the windings in one of these motors? I'd like to fix the broken one that way i have two of the same motor incase this new one ever poops out on me.
@slash4x4lipo do what...break it in? We say it right in the video :)
Yes, whenever you get an rc with any brushed motor you should always break it in. I prefer the water break in method for some reason. (;
simple WD40 will work. Obviously WD is a lubricant and also a rust inhibitor (both good for the motor), but WD is also NOT electrically conductive, so it is totally safe to spray into a brushed motor
Can u use any type of electrical cleaner for motor cleaner.
Have you done the break-in? youre not being specific, what budget are you on? What are you willing to replace? What you dont want to change?
I have had a crawler for about 6 years now and it is very loud and I'm pretty sure it wasnt this loud when I first got it so I was wondering if breaking it in would make it quieter. Thanks
Are you saying to submerge the motor in rubbing alcohol to break in if you have it?
Now what type of house holde items can u use for the oil u said any type of oil just wandering
Any benefit of the wet method vs dry? I don’t have a good set up to be able to do a water break-in but I can easily do this dry method.
HOW MUCH SHORTER LIFE SPAN I HAD A BRUSHLESS E REVO AND DID NOT BREAK IT IN AND STILL WORKS AFTER ALMOST 2 YEARS ON THE STOCK MOTOR. I PREFER NITRO AND GAS BUT I ALSO LOVE THE POWER OF BRUSHLESS.
Can I use rubbing alcohol to clean out the motor after I have place it in water. So it would take the place of the spray can, so can I do that or would it ruine my motor. Thanks for your help.
2 questions. Could I use wd40 as a lubricant? And second could I just take the motor out if my car and put it in the water and run it at a low speed with stock batt?
Apart from bearing oil, what kind of oil is OK as an alternative for the motor after cleaning? Is motor lubrication oil (like the semi-synthetic oil) OK? Is cooking oil OK? Is the motor oil (example: 0W-30) too high in viscosity? Or are they generally the same in viscosity as other oils?
@partinus99 for brushed I guess use just water....
Traxxas never said anything about this so when I first got my slash 2wd, I took it out of the box, charged it up, and ripped it. And no problems and I've had it for 2 years. Still on the same motor.
I've done the same cos im lazy at times if you don't do this trick motor still goes for a long time . Difference is it motor ges up to 20% harder, revs higher! Its an old school trick and does work tho! Cheers from Australia 😊
@MrMetalica11 I think that the 775 motor has more tourqe rather than speed compared to the 12t titan but 12t titan is not good if you need a new motor get the team orion formula pro bb because you can replace the brushes, has ball bearings last way longer. :)
I bought a Ruckus 2wd truck 3 days ago from a hobby store and they never told me that I had to break in the motor. Now yesterday I think I fried the motor because after I ran it, it smelled burned. What should I do?
awsome thats what i do with my brushed motors
Can you clean the motor out with a can of air for a dry clean after using the rc cars
great video guys nice job.
nice vid , im new to rc motors , why do you need to break in !
can you maybe do a vid about how to maintain a brushless motor
should i raise the throttle up and down during this cycle or keep it at one speed
If your brushed motor was/is precut you'll do more harm than good "breaking them in" in distilled water. Sourze: www.teamtekin.com/phone/brushed_maintenance.html
What you need to know is if your particular brushed motor has precut brushes or not, my guess is most modern brushed motors do - which means you'll only want dry break them in, maybe clean them out which electronics cleaner and re-apply suitable oil on the three spots.
does the water method really work because i though the water would rewin the motor.
Thanks for your video 😎👍
This many years later still watching this lol
I am a new RC driver as well as a owner. I want to change out my motor on my drifter rc but don't understand the wire going across the two points besides the positive and negative wires? Do I need those on my new motor? Or replace it with the same one? Looks like a resistor
im diggin the new guy u got with ya!
love the video..n I have a question fo u can I use brake cleaner spray .. to spray in the motor and the stator to clean it .. n use 3 in 1 oil to lubricate the shaft? .. I have the Titan 380 motor brushed
do the brushless motors need to be broken in?
After cleaning out my motor with water (titan 12t 550) I was wondering if It would be ok to lubricate my motor with wd40 or if It would be considered contamination?
I drove my car around in figures of 8 and in straight lines at a very slow speed and very gradually increased but not anywhere near half throttle is this an alright method as i really don't want to risk dropping it in water
To clean the motor out can i use brake clean?
I would like to know this as well?
What would be the purpose of alchol vs water?
Which is most effective water Or dry
What does breaking into the motor do? Like what will happen of u break into the motor ?
So if I don't have distiller water it's ok to totally submerse the motor in alcohol for 20-30 mins?
+Jake Rodriguez One spark and that bowl of alcohol becomes a giant fireball.
@TheRc4wd yea hes no noob, were lucky to have him, Ill stick to unboxings lol
can i use break cleaner t clean my motor or wil it mess it up
can you break in a motor just is good by just driving at a slow pase around your neighborhood?
Have I got to do this if I buy a brushed crawler eg:trx4 or scx10 ll
You should not run current through a motor to break it in. If your brushes are so out of round with your motors comm, that they need seating, then they have gaps in which arcs can form. If there is arching, there is pitting. It would be better to just buy a coupler or a long shank double set screw pinion, and couple it to another motor to spin it, without having to pass current through it. You could also use a drill to spin the motor. Submerging is also bad for bearings, rust, etc..
This is by far the best way to break in a motor
The fact that deionized water or ethanol is being used as a solvent means that it isn't "really" in what most of us understand as water. Both fluids are nonconductive.
do you have to do anything to a brushless? I have never owned a hobby grade RC and plan on buying the top of the line traxxes slash early next month. is there anything i need to know?
how good is that losi 12 t 550 motor is it better than the titan?
do you think i could use wd-40 in place of the motor cleaner? or would this harm the motor?
hello
I could use a traxxas titan (550 size) motor in my ULTIMA DB manufactured by Kyosho?
@partinus99 try the dry method
do brushles motor need break in
can you do the wet methods on a brushless motor?
what was the rubbing alchol for?
What was the rubbing alcohol for??
So what was the purpose of the rubbing alcohol?
Will the under water method work on a Tamiya super stock RZ motor?
I have had my traxxas e-maxx since [08] & I was told by TRAXXAS that the truck origonaly came w/ two 21 T motors ' well It definitly did not ! brand new out of the box ' It had 2 12 T motors . Well it kept burning them up ! Then I finally talked to a man at Traxxas that told me that truck should have came w/ 2 21 T motors . The 12 T motors are not strong enough to hold up to the weight of that truck . Sorry about the spelling & the book I'm sending ' but In your vid. u show 2 ways to break in the motors ' does the dry method help to water proof the motors ? As compared to the wet break in method . Like the Vid. Jimmie R
So after you break in your motor, when spinning it by hand how smooth should it be
What was the rubbing alcohol for
I did the water break in exactly now it runs slower and hotter...I should a left it alone
@rcnightmare thats why i barely ever see him doing the rc help vids
I was thinking about getting an rc car the boss 302 it has the traxxis 12t 550 motor but after googling it iv found nothing but bad reviews on it..if I use the water break in method will it run fine..I'm asking this because they bassiclly claimed to use the break in method which is in the user manual and they have all burnt out.
My car does not have a throttle trim. What should i do keep it running slowly?
Hey man i have a wltoys a959b with a protection board on the back. Im assuming that I have to desolder the pcb from the endbell bed in brushes and resolder the board? Btw I'm thinking of getting rid of the pcb as battery runs down to flat on lipo and i thought it was for overheating protection! Any ideas please reply. Any reply appreciated thanks from Australia cheers 😊
@brucevu71 you will damage the motorm and it likely won't last long
@specialformula14 No becuz its already brushless so you dont have to break it in.
