  • Nowruz, or Persian New Year, marks the beginning of spring and is celebrated by millions of people around the world. It falls on the vernal equinox, typically on March 20th or 21st, and is a time of joy, renewal, and hope.
The celebration of Nowruz dates back thousands of years, with roots in Zoroastrianism, the ancient Persian religion. It symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and the renewal of nature.
One of the most important traditions of Nowruz is the Haft-Seen table, where seven items starting with the Persian letter "س" (pronounced "seen") are arranged on a table. These items usually include wheat or barley sprouts (sabzeh), apples (seeb), sumac berries (somaq), garlic (seer), vinegar (serkeh), coins (sekkeh), and dried oleaster fruit (senjed). Each item symbolizes a different aspect of life and the hopes for the new year.
Another cherished tradition is the practice of visiting family and friends, where people gather to share meals, exchange gifts, and partake in joyous festivities. It is a time for reconciliation, forgiveness, and strengthening bonds with loved ones.
The thirteenth day of Nowruz, known as Sizdah Bedar, is celebrated with outdoor picnics and gatherings. Families and friends spend the day in nature, enjoying the beauty of spring and the company of one another. It is believed that spending the thirteenth day outdoors will bring good luck and happiness for the rest of the year.
Nowruz is not only a celebration of the changing seasons but also a time to reflect on the past year and set intentions for the year ahead. It is a reminder of the cyclical nature of life and the opportunity for growth, renewal, and new beginnings.
As we welcome Nowruz and the arrival of spring, let us embrace the spirit of hope, unity, and joy. May this new year bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to all. Nowruz Mobarak!
