I love this movie. If it had not been out of circulation for so long I think that it would have become much better known as kind of a Christmas movie even.

Exactly. I find it quite baffling that Universal has not promoted the film more. Aside from one VHS release there was nothing until the limited DVD and Blu-rays and now this indicator release is easily the best of them.

A holiday favorite of mine. I've had the TCM blu-ray version for years, but I might check out this nice-looking special edition from Indicator as well. As usual, thanks for the overview.

The extras are really fantastic so even though I believe they share the same master, I think the indicator is substantially better and would heartily recommend double dipping!

There is nothing wrong with Mitchell Leisen as a director. I’ve got the Kino-Lorber version of Easy Living. Midnight (1939) is another good film by Leisen.

I agree that Leisen is underrated but I find it fascinating that both Sturges and Wilder were spurred on to direct their own scripts by the same person around the same time.

I saw this one on TCM years ago. It's always been underseen, which is such a shame. When it comes to Stanwyck in Christmas movies, people tend to prefer Christmas in Connecticut. That's a cute film I enjoy, but I like that slight darkness in Remember the Night. Need to see it again.

Yeah, Connecticut is a classic but this one hits on so many levels. Indicator is doing a standard edition so I'd definitely advise to pick it up. The extras are of course really good.

I really do love this film. I have the TCM disc and because of this review I'm going to pick up this one too. I'm especially intrigued by Jean Arthur's take on Lee Leander. I'm trying to imagine it and I'm sure I'm not doing it justice 😂

The indicator extras are really great and make it a worthwhile double dip.
The second radio version is so fascinating! I started it wondering what the tone was going to be like, and then within the first few seconds it was amazing how well it worked. Arthur winds up playing a bit more of the character’s vulnerability openly that Stanwick had a bit more hidden in her radio version.
The other hidden gem: one or two spots where MacMurray is talking so fast that he stumbles on a line and catches himself before laughing.

I have this LE, such a good film. Interesting you mentioned the applebob scene because I noticed something similar with the Arrow Blu Ray of Woman On The Run. That film has a 'Game Of Death' obvious scene in it near the end. The commentary track explains why that scene is there, BUT, look at the extras and you will see photos for a scene that was never filmed!

It definitely pays to study stills! I was stepping through the image gallery, and suddenly stopped and went hey wait, is that what I think it is?

Thank you Spence. SO glad I picked up the limited edition when I did. I always try to jump on these asap. I know you don't do many livestreams but would love to join you on one in the future if at all possible.

Do you plan on talking about Orson Welles's The Trial Criterion 4K release?

    • @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
      @DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader  7 місяців тому +1

Yes I need to cover that plus the two UHDs of Touch of Evil.
The Trial is interesting because it’s SDR only and I’m trying to figure out exactly how the Criterion stacks up against the Studio Canal version which apparently does have hdr.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusaderThe Seventh Seal is another Criterion UHD release that is SDR, but the BFI release is HDR.
The Criterion of The Rules Of The Game is SDR, but the french release is HDR.
