Should Texas Rangers trade Marcus Semien for financial flexibility after disappointing season?

- The Texas Rangers fell on their face in 2024 attempting to defend their franchises first World Series title. Texas will have to make dramatic moves to get back to contention in 2025, but is one of those moves trading Marcus Semien?
Semien is the Rangers' captain and had an MVP-caliber season in 2023 while leading the franchise to its first championship. But with Semien getting older and borderline all-star level replacements in Ezequiel Duran and Josh Smith does that make Marcus expendable?

The fact that this is even a topic of discussion one year removed from winning it all, is disgusting.
I think it would be a huge mistake to trade Marcus. They essentially made a promise to him by giving him that 7 year deal and to try and move him only 3 years into it would make a huge impression on other potential free agents about how this front office operates.
I wholeheartedly agree
@@TJettman “essentially made a promise to him” yes that’s what contracts are, a mutual agreement. Marcus would be the first to tell you at the end of the day this is a business, players get traded mid contract all the time.
Trade the only guy who managed to stay healthy last year (and has pretty much been an iron man his whole time here)? Cost-cutting starts w/ unloading bloated contracts, not pillars of the organization 😂
It would be hard to trade him. There will be more teams cutting salary.
This would be to hard to take you can’t get rid of an elite second baseman like Semien. You would have to get someone like Gerrit Cole or Chris sale to make this worth it
Look at the World Series this year , Betts , Freeman, Stanton , all guys 32 or older making plays ,I don’t think age is a big of a factor as people think especially with Marcus guy missed 11 games in 6 seasons , after last season everyone should be on block it’s not uncommon for teams that win World Series to start a rebuild after not every team has the Yankees payroll
I have a feeling Ray Davis is done. He got his ring. Now back to mediocrity.
I'm really worried that is the case too
It’s only day 1 no teams have really done anything
@@hollyarendall9674 Ray has already said he’s cutting payroll
Smith likely got a little fatigued at the end of the year given he's never played 150 games before. That said he's a platoon guy on a contender. Foscue's time is next year. He's now a seasoned minor leaguer with little to prove there. Let him sink or swim. I don't think it's ability with him, but can he stay off the trainer's table.
I don't think it's as much of him getting fatigued as it was him getting figured out. I fear the same was true with Zeke.
Trade him to the Oakland A's 4 Rooker and Miller. That would bring another world series
We neeeeeed relief pitching, not a second baseman. Give me a break.
Why would we trade him that would be a dumb move
Yes and lowe
Are you out of your mind
Trade lowe, move corey to 1st, Josh smith plays Shortstop 😌, I do think trading semien if it would happen would be a few seasons later, he does have a big contract I think there's very few teams who would pick that up considering he is on the older side but he still has good years ahead of him
I think Lowe at first and Corey at shortstop is a much better combination, even with Lowe's salary than Smith and Corey. Half the value of Seager being one of the best hitters on earth is that he also plays good shortstop. I don't trust Smith to repeat the first half.

I think it’s the right move to move him. He did what we brought him here to do. Now let’s dump that salary before it gets ugly in the second half of his deal.
Marcus could not get another hit and his contract would still be worth it till the end it, look at guys paid close to him Xander Bogaerts and Xavier Baez , two guys who fell off the map , give me Marcus for his defense capabilities alone
@ like I said he did what we paid him to do, now the smart thing to do would be move him. We brought him in during his peak. He was good, we won, now lest cash in his contract before he falls off a cliff entering his mid 30s.
@ there’s no such thing as “cashing in” on a guy in baseball , you can’t trade him for picks you’re trading for prospects guys that have to develop ,and you pray they turn out to be half the pro Semien is , so you want Seager to make 35 million a year while we develop guys lol , sounds all nice and easy until you put it into reality, they hit a 2 run homer when they signed Seager and Semien , there’s plenty more to improve on this team I know what Marcus is going to bring because he’s done it year in year out for a decade
@ also he was signed to a 7 year deal so no he hasn’t done what he came here to do , he was brought here to win championships plural
@@Kmd-wp9xx cashing in as in trading to dump his salary
