- Juan Manuel Santos, president of the Republic of Colombia and 1973 University of Kansas graduate, returned to campus on September 24. During his visit, he met with students and took part in this conversation at the Dole Institute of Politics, led by Bill Lacy, the institute's director.
During the event, he was also presented with the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award, the highest honor bestowed by the KU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Sounds beautiful, but how exactly would you build that shiny little society again? Giving more money to an already corrupted state does not sound a good idea. So, the other way is by decreasing state intervention and give power to people and entrepeneurs, that meaning more capitalism, meritocracy and individualism, which is the thing the armed guys in FARC are against. Investing half of the GDP in education will not make a country rich. No country got rich like this, why Colombia would then?
If you really want to right the wrongs from the past, expose the truth to the world about Colombia's conflict, make sure justice is made by correcting the inequalities that give birth to armed conflict, and REALLY invest in education. respect the environment and stop trying to sell Colombia to the best investor. A land with so many riches, landscapes, etc, should be paradise, but many are interested that the conflict goes on so that they can steal its resources easily. It's time for REAL change!
Mr. Santos, the objective should not have been to kill the FARC but to focus on the CAUSES of the conflict, the inequalities that continue to affect Colombian society, you being an example of the so-called aristocracy of Colombia and having access to education abroad etc etc, while the great majority of Colombians do not even have enough to put on their plate.
