How the bloody Hell does it coat half a million pound a week to maintain this building?
Someone is taking the piss and filling their pockets with taxpayer money.
It needs auditing and NOW!
Common vein running through anything to do with taxpayers footing the bill - nobody questions the extortionate charges/prices of those carrying out the work.
Much the same when it is quoted that the cost to police standing by Eco protestors blocking the M25 (for example) cost the police £millions. Nobody appears to raise concerns at such ridiculous costings.

Before doing any large project, there should be a national pricing committee consisting of a few people with common sense and calculators. Work out the man hours and materials, then add 20% to allow a firm to profit, work that cost out and tell firms what you are going to pay. It would be better than just saying yes to anyone with a random high number.
Tend to thing that would not suit the brown envelope transactions. Think Covid and the fortunes made... over 500 new billionaires, that is what government is about.
Move the House Of Commons out of London to the middle of the UK where real people live. Then turn this building into a museum.
It's a national treasure, it must be looked after
£100 million spent on parliament while the people are looking forward to a winter of choosing whether to eat or heat their homes back to the days of feudal society it seems.
They have had enough money paid to this corrupt building and who sits inside it
A decaying relic fallen into disrepair. An archaic building no longer fit for the modern world seems pretty well suited a place to house our similar political system
Demolish it and build a cheap warehouse that would be more suitable for the third rate politicians that would work (🤔) it in.

Historically the monarch did host their parliament in the palace before dedicated buildings were used

It's because tax payers money is paying for it. The price always goes up when the tax payer is paying. Every company has a separate price list with inflated prices for jobs paid for with tax payers money.
It's called ' Greed'
And 'Corruption'.
Put into a mothballed state, make it a world heritage site and a museum. Meanwhile, build a new modern parliament somewhere outside of central London that is cheaper to maintain. I've been to the Palace of Westminster, and yes it's grand - but it's also not fit for purpose of a modern democracy. That's why PM questions and other debates in the house of commons still resembles something akin to a 17th century drunken brawling session, where little or nothing gets achieved.
Hell of a lot to preserve a snakepit.
Why not use some of those offices that Rees wants to sell off instead.
I think the current look of the palace and the way politics is done today looks homogeneous to me.
Save Big Ben, cut your losses and demolish the palace and build a modern building!!! The thing is going to collapse on top of them if they keep delaying it.

This place needs retirement done and a separate place .....i.e a simple office block and this would save ££££'s so let's get it done ....... as for historical context well you have erased too much already so why not this old fossil
