@1867Phoenix It was a temporary restriping using narrow lanes b/c of the I-64 closure and rebuild in 2008-9. I-70 between I-270 and I-170 was "widened" from 6 to 8 thru lanes for the same reason. After I-64 was reopened, the lanes were returned to standard width. Honestly, 44's traffic volumes were low enough such that even with it being used as a detour, it didn't need 10 lanes.
I-44 is probably my favorite highway through St. Louis. Too bad you didn't film the section west of I-270. . . it's really scenic. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
@countenanceblog And then after the I-64 reconstruction, they should've kept 70 and 44 being 8 and 10 lanes respectively. In fact, I-70 is only 6 lanes the whole way from Downtown up to 270, thus comes traffic jams. My I-70 video shows why the lanes need to be widened and I am not sure if the I-70 relocation will affect it because through Downtown, 70 (which will be 44) doesn't have issues, even though it's 4 lanes and the traffic issues will be in the same area as it always is.
The First time I travled I-44 in St. louis(in December 2006) it was 8 lanes just as it is in this video but.In 2008 and 2009 it was 10 lanes(see google earth) now i-44 has reverted back to 8 lanes.
@FreewayAndrew You could have had 8 lanes on 70 between 270 and 170 with standard width but no shoulders. On 44, they had to have 11 foot lanes and no shoulders. 44's AADTs aren't that high to justify 10 lanes.

@Reiser86 And not to mention, the new bridge will ease traffic on the Poplar Street Bridge.
@1867Phoenix Even in the current Google Earth image (April 2010), I-44 is 10 lanes, I don't know why that road got reduced to 8 lanes.
@tshane250 Thanks, I knew that section was scenic, but I didn't go in that way.
