    This is helpful, thanks! Out of curiosity, especially for a NAS with multiple computers needing to connect to one address, why would anyone ever want DHCP as default for Truenas?

      I can think of many reasons. Here are a couple obvious ones:
      1) Your TrueNAS box is usually (should never) be used as a firewall, router, or NAT server.
      2) As per #1, you would simply assign the TrueNAS box a “static DHCP Address” on the firewall/router/NAT Server.
      3) As per #2, you would simply forward only the WAN ports needed by the TrueNAS Box, and refuse all others on the firewall/router/NAT Server.
      4) As per #3, you would eliminate LAN authentication bloat, without sacrificing WAN security.
      I am oversimplifying this to the Nth degree, but;
      Flexibility
      Scaleability
      Portability
      Security
      and pure real-world deployment numbers (outside of a virtual home lab)
      Would be my first couple of guesses.
      But as always, there are exceptions.
      (My to the point style of writing is sometimes misinterpreted as snarky. No snark felt or intended)

    I did all that but in my case i have on each PC an onboard 1Gbe intel nic which is used purely to connect to the internet through a router and a Marvell 10Gbe PCIE card in each for PC-PC activity.
    Now i've set the IP on the 10Gbe NIC on each PC one of which is WIndows based and i can login on the windows pc through that IP address to get the gui. BUT if i unplug the intel nic which i dont need on the TrueNas machine at all i lose access to it completely. So can't connect purely through the 10Gbe card.
    If i leave the Intel plugged in and the 10Gbe plugged in i can do file transfer but it uses the 1Gbe not the 10Gbe card.
    Driving me nuts.

    On the R20 system am I correct in assuming that the ethernet port is only usable to out of band use? I've been trying to connect to the system and am unable to do so. We don't currently have it connected to the SFP+ ports as we are waiting on hardware to arrive.

    • @TrueNAS
      @TrueNAS  2 роки тому

      You are correct! RJ45 is only for ipmi/bmc access(i.e. outband).

    Hello, thanks for creating such high quality content!
    I always thought static IPs would need to be set up on the router side, and not on the hosts. I had three points I wanted check if they were correct.
    1. That IP would be ideally static for as long as that machine is running. Is it true?
    2. If I turn off the machine with TrueNAS, and start connecting other devices in my network there could be a chance that static IP I specified gets used by another device since the router is unaware of it. Is it true?
    3. What kind of collisions could happen, shouldn't I better configure this at router level? Or should I have to configure router-level and host-level too.
    Thanks a lot! :D

      Hi Ramon,
      This is a great question for our forums! Please create a post over there as it is difficult to help over the comments section. The questions you're asking are a bit more complicated to answer than with just a "true" or "false".
      www.truenas.com/community

    • @richiestombaugh114
      @richiestombaugh114 3 роки тому +7

      Yes there could be some collisions, however when you login to your router you should be able to adjust what the "DHCP Range" is. You typically want this several addresses away from the beginning of the subnet. So for example it would 192.168.0.11-192.168.0.254. This allows you to statically assign things in the 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.10 range. The router will never assign anything with an IP Address of 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.10.
      I hope this helps!

    • @AceBoy2099
      @AceBoy2099 3 роки тому

      You could set up the static ip on the router side, you just need to find the mac address for each port to assign it and IP on the router. Should work the same as long as the router doesn't bug out.
      What I'm not sure of is would it hurt anything to do static in both spots, router and on device (as long as it's not mismatched)?!

    Hey, I was wondering, now that I have disabled DHCP, I can no longer check for updates through truenas, or access plugins. Is there something I did to make it do this? I saw a comment in one of your forums stating: "I had this problem. I tried to ping from command line without success. Then remembered I changed network access from DHCP to static... but forgot to give it the DNS servers & gateway. I added that to configuration and now works :)" I have no idea how to give the NAS the DNS servers or gateway. Truly feel like I'm out of options.

    Being a Synology user, I naturally tried Xpenology but wouldn't run on my poweredge servers. So went for TrueNAS and so far it's not bad.. But whose stupid idea was it to make it DHCP in the first place?? You NEVER have dynamic IP's on server, so I have no idea what their logic is behind it. I hate that going to change the IP just adds an alias.
    I have followed the same steps but don't get same prompts, sick of DHCP lol, sure I can log on to my ISR and lock to MAC but still, I want to meet the guy who said "make it dynamic" so can tell him he's an idiot lol.

    • @ericneo2
      @ericneo2 6 місяців тому

      @@marcandruu There is no new way.
      You have to delete the TrueNAS and Linux network adaptors and then recreate them for inheritance to carry the static IP through the stack.
      It truly boggles my mind why they took the ability to change your network settings and ip out of the GUI. Even their out of date documentation shows it's still there in the GUI.

      It is because when making this configuration, the gateway is missing, without a gateway there is no Internet connection.
