I like "How bad can it be", but after listening to "Biggering" about four times, this song would have been just a bit better to send the message and get it straight. It's something about those last four to five lines that really sets the record straight.

@@emberhermin52 yes, its just the tone between the two, in my opinion that changes. "How bad can I be" version feels a bit out of place, and forced while "Biggering" has it flow from one to another and ends it off with who cares if somethings are dying, instead of who cares if a few trees are dying. That's why I like "Biggerings" meaning a bit more, because it reflects not only the death of trees but the death of more than that. Just changing some words around or changing the tone of how something was said, can change the meaning of a whole sentence.

How Bad Can I Be: “Who cares if a few *trees* are dying.”
Biggering: “Who cares if a some *things* are dying.”
He acknowledges that it’s not just trees dying, but also animals, and maybe even humans. I mean, with all of the pollution, it could kill a person who had pre-existing lung issues. And the fact that he uses the word, “things,” he’s saying he doesn’t view the animals and people who are dying as animate, alive, conscious beings, he sees them as things, and it doesn’t matter if they die.

In my opinion, this song perfectly captures who the Once-ler is supposed to be, in the original book and TV special, he was basically a representation of soulless corporations, hence why we don’t see his face, but in the 2012 adaptation he is instead humanised and presented as a underdog who rose to the top, but went too crazy with power and ended up destroying a entire Valley of trees, especially in ‘How bad can I be?’. But in ‘Biggering’, he is basically this sociopathic and unhinged businessman who only cares about nothing but his company and thneed, too bad illumination thought this song was too “Edgy” and “Dark” for the kids, and ended up scrapping it and went for a song that spreads like a disease Edit: mom I’m famous 😎

TBH, it would have been cool if Illumination decided to make the Once-ler to go from his personality from the final product of the movie slowly to the Once-ler in this song because that is how most companies end up. They usually start out of passion, however, once the money flows in, the get greedy. This is the same route companies like Illumination went down. Probably why they didn't use this song.

He means Greed is like a animal, Like he said, "It's one that always needs to feed, but is never satisfied." Meaning it is always hungry for more. Greed is even one of the 7 deadly sins! you need to feed it and feed it and it is never full. it ALWAYS needs MORE. Pride, witch is the "Nasty little worm" according to the Lorax, is different. I can interpret the line "The more you try to find it, The more it likes to hide" in 2 different ways:
      1. The Lorax is refering to the idea that Greed is hiding a worm (Pride)
      2. He also could be refering to Greed who is the Hider.

2:15 I think it was a pretty interesting choice to have the heart of the song being not about the consequences of the Once-ler's actions or "Biggering" but the root of it. The song says that greed in itself is not the problem, "You really can't blame greed", but at the core of greed is, infact, pride. Once-ler is so prideful in himself, his business, his actions that he's ignoring any harmful results outside of himself. The song is suggesting that pride is easily overlooked which is why the Lorax annunciates "See, now THAT's why you're biggering". It also suggests that he's reached a point that the need for success and the goodness he feels from it, from pride, is more dangerous and more destructive than what the coating of greed is causing or more importantly, while his greed needs to be reigned in, his pride is a far bigger monster that needs to be handled first.
There's a lot you can debate which is more devastating in this particular situation, pride or greed, but I think its an interesting point to bring up. Even more so that the thing that lurks under greed is brought up around the middle point, the center of the song that supposedly is about greed. The Once-ler sings about greed and not pride, the Lorax brings up pride and instead of reflecting on it, the Once-ler returns to greed, confirming that pride is indeed harder to contend with for the Once-ler.

Like, imagine in that song, he genuinely doesn't realize the long-term harm he's doing, because he can see immediate results. Ok so from that one video I managed to comment before it got deleted, I said that I could imagine the Once-ler having to hear from the Lorax constantly while he was biggering his company that at some point, he would be constantly annoyed between hearing the Lorax and disagreeing with what he has to say and also the Once-ler himself wanting to make things different since he somewhat recognizes that he is making the environment worse. I'd like to think that if this were animated, the Once-ler would be so caught up with his frustrations between both sides that he would slam a desk or something that has a cup full of coffee. As the camera zooms in on the spilling coffee, it would somehow transform into oil and we would get a shot of oil spilling throughout the Truffula forest, like a transition. I don't know just wanted to repost what I had said before.

honestly, if you tweaked "how bad can i be" so that the onceler's entire character arc doesn't happen during it, then i think both songs could've been in the movie. hbcib couldve been the song representing the start of the onceler's career and his greed increasing as he starts growing his company and producing thneeds, and then once the thneeds get really popular and the onceler becomes rich, biggering gets played as a sort of reprise to hbcib, representing that he started out as a normal guy and was pushed to the edge by his obsession with money and fame, destroying the environment in the process.
i don't know if this is actually a good idea or if its just a product of my love for movie/musical song reprises, but i just think it sounds cool in theory lmao

      @starentertainment-n4l Рік тому +26

I may be 2 months late to the party, but I think that this would be a great idea. Not only would it be more appropriate to the theme, but it would also make for an interesting character study for the onceler. Not only that, But to add on to your idea, what if in between, the onceler actually had a conflict with himself, with one half saying this is wrong to the other who is appealing to the onceler's pleasure, telling him that this is exactly what he wanted? After that, the onceler would still have an argument with the lorax, and this song would play as the onceler makes his point that he still wants to keep biggering.

      Agreed 100%
How Bad Can I Be could have also been shown as like, a way to signify the big rift in the Lorax and the Onceler, with the Onceler starting off with trying to convince himself that he isn't a baddie. That he's genuinely a good guy just following his dream.
But then... he realizes something. He doesn't have to believe it. Only other people need to. Which then devolves in him doing worse and worse things because, well, nobodies going to stop him? He's just a man following his dreams after all.

Probably one of my favorite differences about both songs is that in “How Bad Can I Be?” The Onceler says ”Who cares if some trees are dying?” Whereas in “Biggering” he says “Who cares if some THINGS are dying?” The difference being that the Onceler in the cut version is far more aware of his actions than he was in “How Bad Can I Be?” and is fully aware that it isn’t just trees that are dying from what he is doing.

I'd imagine this song wouldn't take place as soon as the onceler begins his decent his fall into corporate devil hood, but actually after he has built the first factory and thneed production is rising.
At the start of this song, he is looking back on his small beginnings and how he started with a small little cottage and that he needs all these *_bigger_* items and that he is *_biggering_*
when we reach the "good part" of this song, he is a massive company, his ego, pride and greed has taken him, and he needs to continue *_biggering_* even if he knows some things are dying.
So yeah I think the first part takes place after the first factory was done, then the other half is when he is *_biggering_* his factories and has fully fallen to corporate devilhood, what a true villain should be.
