- In today's episode, we dive into the captivating history of the Black Caribs, or Garifuna, of St. Vincent, a tale marked by resilience, cultural fusion, and a fight for independence that reshaped the Caribbean. The Black Caribs, thought to be descendants of shipwrecked enslaved Africans who merged with the Carib Indians, ruled St. Vincent for centuries, developing a distinct community blending African and Carib cultures. They grew in strength, differentiating themselves from the Red Caribs with unique language, customs, and political structures. The 18th century saw intense conflict with the British colonizers, as the Black Caribs valiantly defended their land and rights. Despite recognition from British Governor Sir William Young of their rightful ownership of St. Vincent, the Black Caribs faced a devastating defeat in 1796, leading to their tragic deportation. Many perished, but survivors established new communities in Central America, particularly in Belize, Nicaragua, and Honduras, preserving their Garifuna identity. This story is not just history; it's a saga of survival and the enduring spirit of a people who resiliently fought to maintain their identity against all odds. As a garifuna person myself this is true
Keep ‘em coming !!!!
We garifuna people are finally getting to know our history
The Africans arrived on St Vincent in the fourteenth century from the Kingdom of Mali during the journey of Abubakari II. The story of the slave ship is tale told by the colonizers. Honestly how can slaves who are chained up below decks escape a sinking ship…? Anyone with common sense would see the lie in that story. The colonizers can’t even get the dates correct or even the countries that owned the ships but people still believe that our African ancestors were slaves. Garifuna people have maintained their culture and language unbroken until today and yes I am Garifuna, the story explained orally from generations is totally different.
Thx
My mom explained it to me like that
She is originally from labugana
@Wolde72 Correct!
Can you please share more with me. I'm half vicny and I hardly see anything about my fatherland! I've heard of our ancestors being kicked out of Scotland and Ireland for not bowing to catholicism, Is this true? Have you heard this??
I heard our ancestors were always on that land as caribs or native aka black. Is this just a mix of afrcians and black caribs mixing?
My last name is Daniel's and Robertson. I'd love to learn more, but nobody knows anything
This is not entirely true.
