You're an inspiration, Ian.
Best time to be writing is now.
Not the best time to be read though.
Exactly, don’t overthink it
Indeed!
You are a very big inspiratory man.
Personally, Bob Dylan was and is my hero, he also started young as a Natural Born Writer. I have learned something here and there from every book I like: dialogues from Brave New World, great images from Kafka, like an impenetrable castle, Doom, being a beetle, On the Road: captivating adventures, Hemingway: underlying fears and motives, Ulysses: stream of consciousness, and lately Haruki Murakami.
Now I am ruminating on the fact that there comes a time for every human being to let go of his shadow. But to what extent can the shadow live on alone? Well, usually they perish quickly and only a few usually make it to the next spring. The older you are, the harder it becomes to cut off the shadow. Such a crazy idea is running through my head right now. So thanks, old Japan man! lol
Just saying: all your tips and hints are helping me a lot. Don't you hate those rich middle-class girls, with their latte routine and their expensive houses and their expensive Apple computers, writing their meaningless books? I mean on UA-cam?
BTW: I am Dutch, not even a native English speaker or writer.
Is your top 25 short story list published anywhere?
Christopher Paolini wrote a masterpiece at 15...Lord of the Star Wars Rings.
😂

so many editors have said that a writer arrives into themeselves about 35/40. for me it was 45. you've lived long enough to witness the patterns of people, culture, and you're no longer feeling things to be true, but knowing them to be true. of course there are abberations/exceptions to the rule: one of my fave all time poets/cartoonists was a genius at the age of 27, michael leunig (probably not well known unless you're Australian).
I wonder if, instead of the notion of chronological age, we should ask how "old" the soul is.
By that, I mean this: are "young" masterpiece writers the way they are because their souls are old?
(Of course, I don't think there's a singular answer that applies to all such writers, but it's a question that came to mind.)
The main thing I like about my juvenalia is the meeting of literary pyrotechnics with the sheer hubris of thinking that anyone else would lift a finger to work out what any of it means... I'm not even sureI can work it out anymore.
That said, someone emailed me the other day and asked if they could use a line from some ancient thing of mine on t-shirts, stickers, postcards etc. for some charitable organization and wanted to know how to credit it. That was wild, and an interesting coincidence with the release of this vid.
Nabokov also said no one has a novel in them until they're forty. For me, that's probably right, but I doubt I would have published and sold my fiction without having had countless runs at all kinds of published and unpublished stuff over many years. There's probably some kind of procedural memory that young writers need to invest in developing from the get-go, and good for them if they "make it" earlier (whatever that means).
Maybe it’s not a masterpiece but Kerouac changed the game.
YES, but they want to play Sparking Zero!
Would love to see what Rimbaud wrote on Galaxy gas!
I have a question, WC: what advice would you give to someone working in the comics medium?
Rimbaud is the goat! he remains the most illuminating influence on my writing.
Don’t you think Shelley + Byron, had a hand in the monsters creation?
Thank you for all the videos.
Percy Shelly helped edit the book and offered a few suggestions to Mary. You can find some of his line edits but it was mostly Mary's book.
Of course young writers can write masterpieces! Milk and Honey was written when Rupi was just 20
hope you joking…
I respect it but that's not a masterpiece...
Nope, you need to be whatever my age is when the question is asked.
No. If 35 is young, then yes.
Matthew Lewis wrote and completed The Monk at age 19!
What makes a gimmick novel?
A gimmicking press?
