That red Maserati A6GCS Fantuzzi Spyder at the beginning is a speedy little bastard. The Porsche 550 Spyder was not the only giant killer of that era it seems. Excellent driving. Terrific video. Thanks for posting!
Next time you make one of these videos Nicolas, if you can, make the effort to place an extendable sound microphone with a windsock in a non windy place - preferably near the exhaust. A video like this would be delicious!
Yes, one of those little Zoom recorders in a thick sock in the boot somewhere (trunk), and then just dump the camera mic's audio and use this instead. It does make a surprising difference, losing the wind-noise.
You, sir, are a very good driver. I am happy to say that.First stint driver l mean, fast, aggressive and smooth, the way you throw the car early in the corner is outstanding, truly talented driver.
Such an accurate speedometer.. Pin-point almost 🤣.... What a car though certainly give you an insight into the ability of C Type.. The sound. The braking. The handling... Just wonderful... Took me a minute to figure out it was the over-drive switch!
Terrific video and great comments. Don't know what was up with the Allard guy. Maybe that stuff about a half turn of slop in the steering is true. Whatever, he certainly seemed determined to be the first car to the accident!
Absolute amazing 50 minutes watching this... But... red Maserati was a little cheeky on yellow to green flag. Late decelerate and early accelarate!! And Driver 1 always waited the green flag line to accelarate, while others not!! Driver 2 uses the red line all the time.... :) :). And that Overdrive switch... My God... My father's Bedford truck had it on the gear lever and I could pull it up at any time needed with my fingers while changing gears!!! Please relocate that switch, cause it seems quite hard to find/use and bending in front losing sight and hands off steering wheel!!!! Thanks for the video even with the wind blowing...
It’s spooky it looks just the same circuit as the LMP1 cars drive on but with twice the distance between the corners, great video thanks for uploading.
Great video. Thanks for posting. Typical English speedometer, cable driven and flopping around. Just like my Spitfire, MG and Cobra. Cheers from Texas.
Hope this guy never looked at the speedo or tach because he'd get dizzy from them bouncing around. Joseph Lucas rides with him. I do like the hose on the dash that acts like a cornering g meter; that's ingenious
Had a V12 XJS all through the great TWR years. Before that I had a Triumph Spitfire with a Speedo exactly the same. Friends would ask what speed were you doing? Oh between 70 and 90 mph
Is it me, or is that lovely red Maserati not really slowing down much for the yellow flags? He ate the Jag up as it was passing the green flags (implying he was catching it up during the yellow zone) and pulling away from him in a yellow zone after that. I am not familiar with the details of the racing flags, but I thought you had not to change positions and slow down appreciably for yellow flags/lights.
Yes indeed. And they are very strict on that. Many cars had penalties. I gained lots of positions because cars before me received penalties and ended up 13th overall.
@@NicolasBertchannel thanks for the reply! Do you know its number for the '53 MM, by any chance? It probably shows up in this newsreela few times: ua-cam.com/video/cpAw0630nzo/v-deo.html
@@NicolasBertchannel 207 kph translates to just over 128 mph. Surely a C-type with OD can beat that, no? Those dashed white lines on the side of the road seemed to indicate so.
Very cool haveing an overdrive, the speedo bouncing might be nearing lubrication internally? Had an MG that'd be doing anything between 70/90 on the Chichester bypass, until I oiled it a bit. Enjoy that Ctype needs a microphone by the exhaust, that'd be tremendous, cheers
@NicolasBertchannel Was Duncan Hamilton's D Type a lot more powerful or had you slowed down for that amber warning light? Either way the Renault driver would have had a shock.
Keith houghton it may be both, the cable can be oiled by putting a small plastic bag of oil on the end of the detached cable, useing an elastic band to seal it then hold it up an let gravity feed the cable, it seams that slightly sticky internal cables cause the jumping.. I've run shorter cables powered by a battery drill to test speedo or tachometer for fluid movements, if their stuff at all internal oiling can work, clock repairs places have knowledge of special oils to use for speedometer an tachometer.. Best of luck.
the speedometer is having a blast
That’s the best way 😊
Accurate to +/- 50 mph.
Yep. It's all over the place. Wouldn't trust it at all.
Gotta love Jaguar electrical systems.

I carved an XK120C out of a block of pine wood in 1953. This car fired my love of Jaguar ever since.
I still have that model.😮

My favourite car of all time, much classier than a D or E type. Only ever seen one on the road, and it really does look the part.
That moment when you click a video for the sound of the eng--

I dream of one day owning the C to the F type because all of them are just perfect

Dommage que la prise de son soit dégueulasse. Avec un micro déporté, on aurait eu le bonheur d'apprécier les vocalises du 6 en ligne
Shame that the sound is buggered.
🤔Does anyone know what is that little switch at the bottom left of the dashboard, and what is it for?
Speed and Rev counter as useless as they were back in the day ;-) It's only the temp and fuel gauges that matter, the rest you can feel.
Try microphone in footwell or turn it around and seal it from air
Interesting speed and tachometer. I thought all cars of this era had chronometric meters.
what is the toggle switch for? over drive?
It's almost like that speedo was trying to get his attention, like, dude, take it easy, I'm in my 70s!
🫣😂

Love that crazy speedo needle. The cable has a kink in it. Is that toggle switch on the instrument panel for overdrive?
I have the same question.

Engine management is difficult with the imprecise cockpit instrumentation.
Is that an overdrive switch on the bottom left of the instrument cluster?
Yes it is, this C-type (XKC008) was the only C-type factory delivered with an overdrive, on request by Leslie Johnson for the 1953 Mille Miglia.

I wish the would have let these vintage cars run the more vintage circuit - no chicanes on the Mulsanne straight!
Speedo doesn't matter, we tape it over, but most important to have an accurate Tacho 😊 roughly what was top speed?
I've never seen a Tacho that moved anti clock !
All XK120s featured these instruments.
Why worry about speedo, just watch your revs, so you don't blow the old straight 6 to hell!
I wonder what that switch is he keeps using?

Question: did you not know about how easy it is to scan a car?. The changes sadly make it look like an American wants to be.
