Am a novice to boats, but still love them. Watching all these stories about wee wooden boats seems that there is abundant fun to be had with these wee cosy boats. Wish I’d thought this way years ago. Love them all.
Huge amount of boat in 25 ft. There are some variations, original small and low cabin lap-strake without mid engine called Nordic Folkboat (see wikipedia). Then there is more rare longer+high main saloon versions like this, and all can be clinker or lap-strake. I had 1959 very rare lap-strake, long cabin with high part in the hole main saloon which gave little more room. Best boat I have ever had. I have had little longer and narrow "Hai" which gives limited range of use, 25 -38 feet plastic boats, but all of those have limitations compared to Folkboat. Very unique atmosphere you just have to experience. In that size good speed in all wind directions. Have been sailing over 20m/s wind, in gusts mast allmost hit the waves :) Very seaworthy and behaves allways quietly. Good to sail also alone. 2 adults + 2 children needs good weather, few days inside in the rain is not recommended :) Do it on your own with a big book :) I raced small events, no big difference between lap-strake and clinker, main difference in my mind comes from higher cabin and mid engine/propeller which also makes boat little tail heavy. Have to say lap-strake have a unique, very beautifull sound when inside the boat going to sleep ashore. Wooden boats offcourse needs to take care in right way. Normal service is easy, but if you have bigger (I had freezing damages in keel timber) damages, repairing needs some skills. Over 40 yrs old salt water cruisers also often needs keel bolt (usually normal steel) check. Long keel is extremely strong. My friend jumped over a large stone, no damage. I get lost to a sand bank in our big lakes. One hanging on shroud and Outboard full power was enough because long smooth keel. Outboard version maybe have some limitations in big waves but when there is wind you don't need motor. Maybe only thing I would change is adding sitting areas self water clearing when going to Atlantic Ocean :)
These qualities you describe far out way the additional maintenance costs and moorage expenses to the commited owner.I admire long term owners of classic wood boats.
Beautiful boat! when I was a boy I sailed with my uncle on his Cheoy Lee Offshore 26 (Frisco Flyer) which is based on the folkboat lines so naturally my childhood hero of sorts was Blondie Hasler and Jester and that adventure heh. I would love to own a folkboat...maybe someday. I currently sail a Drascombe Longboat in Florida Bay and around the Keys but the bluewater calls and a more stout vessel would be nice to go south in.
I love the video, I raced a Folkboat MK II for many years on Sydney harbour and had a wonderful and successful time, Now as a solo sailor, I sail a Stornoway 18 check out Sailing Kate Louise , cheers Paul
wonderful couple.. a trio actually... this boat and the committed husband wife who saved her,brought her back to her sweet side. Honestly told, that's what your stories tell so well. Like the frank conversations down below.. the lovely couple speaking of the early days as they cuddle in the companionway.. the look on his face as his wife darlingly tells of the early days, and the boats charm.. you can spot Dave facial emotion thinking back fondly of those days,and nights . What a lovely video! I sailed on a wooden, lapstrake Folkboat on San Francisco Bay for a year when I first began sailing. Reliable wind and sailing the sweetest-sailing boat ever made--what an introduction to sailing that was! I greatly enjoyed your video.
I think the common denominator that comes out of all these videos is how much all the owners love their individual boats. As if they were literally part of the family. It's great to watch and may the videos continue with the same message.

My understanding is that the international folkboat is slightly faster with the wind but the Nordic folkboat can sail closer to the wind and has less wind resistance when going against the wind due to shorter cabin though I have not been on either nor witnessed a race between them
