  • The latest Studio Ghibli movie "How do you live?" just released in theaters in Japan without any advertising or promotion, except for a poster and title. The international version named "The Boy and Blue Heron" is still yet to be given a release date, but fans of Miyazaki's movies will be glad to hear that this is another masterpiece comparable to Spirited Away and other beloved Studio Ghibli titles.
In this video I give my impressions and thoughts on the movie without spoilers and discuss how the somewhat cryptic release of this film was correct choice for potentially Miyazaki's final directed film.

I'm glad I got to hear your feeling. I bet you are really good at Japanese. Even for Japanese it is still hard to understand what Hayao wanted to tell. While I was watching the movie, I got the feeling that I appreciated abstruct paintings. I was not in theater, I was in museum. It's so hard to tell this feeling in different language tho.

いえいえ, I'm only intermediate level, but I appreciate the kind words. You make a good point though, and I think perhaps the reason why I understood the overall message and most of the plot was because I wasn't bogged down in some of the more complicated dialogue. So maybe it was easier for me to focus on the more abstract or larger picture ideas presented. But like you said, I have also heard that many Japanese people had a hard time understanding it.

I'm a big fan of Miyazaki movies. This advertising strategy is a bit risky, I think the announcement of the new movie should have been made in a one-minute video with exciting scenes from old Ghibli movies. Not having an announcement video is not a strategic move, it's laziness. I love Hayao Miyazaki and all the Studio Ghibli staff, I hope they advertise. It doesn't have to be scenes from the movie, even I can prepare a simple announcement video in a short time.

That's definitely not a bad idea. But also consider how this risky move generated a lot more curiosity in the film, at least that is the perspective I get here in Japan. Maybe for the international release it will be different. And there was still at least some advertising before release, just not in the form of details or a trailer. Regardless, it's not fair to call it laziness, not with these talented individuals who spend so much time working painstakingly.
