i think the problem people have is its insincere cringe. they do subtle but cool anime flourishes, easily talk out groups, do full freestyle dances in public, have immense swagger but theyre supposed to be dorks. A lot of boys cant relate since its the stuff theyd shrink into nothingness for trying to be cool for.
imagine if booty bumping had the reputation of the naruto run.

In 95 years, when the rights of this movie go into the public domain, and it gets the "Winnie Pooh treatment" of having someone make it into a horror parody, that's exactly what's going to happen. Mei's mom humiliates her, she snaps, discovers her powers, and uses them to kill everyone who tormented her.

You say it’s cringe, but I’d love to argue it’s very accurate to nerdy adolescent girl coming of age. Even less cringe than it could be. My friends cosplayed as homestuck, hetalia, and black butler cosplays(like full on, wigs an all) to school frequently, rolling around in the hallways at lunch. It was cringe for me then, and it is horrifying now. But it’s part of that coming of age.

Speaking as someone who dragged my folks to multiple movies in theaters growing up that were NOT to their liking at all (oh, the sacrifices loving parents make), I don't dare to imagine the levels of discomfort + drudged up memories of childhood cringe & insecurity felt by the moms and dads who sat through THIS with their children (who were likely laughing & cringing their own obnoxious butts off too).
