I can imagine a second video “why I’m switching back to AF” coming out in a few months!
😜
Hahaha sim exactly
'Why it is worth switching to Panasonic"
Or a few days!😅
Months? My bet is days
I’m a good influence :)
Making us more broke by introducing me to Leica 🥲
What I love about Sony Mirrorless cameras is the photopeaking makes manual focus almost as quick as AF, and get vintage lenses is super affordable. Would love to see you making a video about vintage lenses :D
I have an a6000 and several vintage lens, can't seem to ever get a picture in focus
I’m delighted Vivienne has enticed you to finally come to the dark side 😈 Thank you V for doing something I wasn’t able to fully do on my own 😁
HEHEHEHE
but my film prices 🥲
I recently have jumped back to film and picked up a Nikon F3 and a Canon A-1, great little cameras and a hell of a lot cheaper. But nothing wrong with M6, amazing work of art!!!
I’m 95% manual focus shooter… I miss some shots but generally I get “better” more consistent sharp photos with manual focus… with practice it becomes easier to quickly focus manually and I don’t have to worry about autofocus not performing how I want it to…
It really does get easier when you keep shooting manual focus. I use aperture priority so focus is the the main thing that I focus on (PUN).
@@tonykeltsflorida I need to start doing this more ha! That and playing more with ISO for shots
🚨 EDIT: Watch out for spam comments posing as me! My response will always have a checkmark next to my name! 🚨
What’s your favorite MANUAL lens? 😁
24mm samyang T cine lens
Samyang fisheye
Voigtländer 50mm 1.2
Also my favorite lens overall. Glued to my camera atm.
Voigtlaender 2/35 Ultron II with the original lenshood. It's sharper than any summicron, absolutely tiny and looks quiet sexy.
@@coffeeandcameras1 I also have that with me but found the 1.2 to be quite soft. Do you find that in yours too?
Manual focus has been one of the most impactful and rewarding experiences in my photography journey. The Zeiss Loxia lenses are magical.
I feel like manual focus is similar to a manual shift car. It's an obsolete technology that rarely produces better results. However, it is also a lot of fun for some people and that's not to be discounted in hobby or art.
Manual lenses are certainly not obsolete and you are right that they don't necessarily produce better photographs but that's not the point. Lots of photographers feel they are quicker and more accurate focusing with a manual lens. BTW, I can assure you a manual gear stick is not obsolete either, it is preferred in lots of countries all over the world and especially in motorsports.
So glad you're doing videos on manual focus lenses. I've been using a6000 body with- Nikkor 55mm f3.5 for close-up & macro, 24mm f2.8, Contax Planer 50mm f1.7, Sigma 10-20mm f4.5-5.6... + a dozen others... depending where I'm shooting and what mood I'm in. Love the feel of old glass !!
I have an a6000 with canon glass and others, but can never get proper focus, any advice? Could it be my adapter?
I agree, Leica and manual focus have changed my photography since, I'm traveling more and not shooting things that require breakneck speed autofocus. I kept my A73 and the 35GM for those times when I "need" AF. Sold off the rest of my Sony lenses and picked up an M11 to go with M7 and 35 Summicron, couldn't be happier.
Now you should watch some anamorfaking videos from Tito Ferradans.
I have been using the TechArt Pro adapter. One thing you need to watch out for these manual focus lenses. If any of them has floating glass elements, you may want to do a rough manual focus of the lens before triggering auto focus so that you get the best optical performance. Let 's face it. These M glass scream for a Leica rangefinder. BTW the Fotodiox is a shameless direct copy of the TechArt Pro.
First lol
ALAN ANDREWSSSSSS hope all is well buddy
I just picked up a Helios 44-2 that I’ve been enjoying, I also adapted a couple of Canon FD lenses too to my Sony. They’re always fun to use
I autofocus my Helios 44-2 with fotodiox adopter on my A7riv
Just picked up an old Minolta 135mm and an industar 61 lens for my a7iii :P. Excited to see how they do as my first all manual lenses.
Need to try Voigtlander lenses. More character, and in most cases smaller lenses available vs Zeiss ans Leica
Since 1 year i began to colect voigtländer lenses for my A7R3. They makes me very happy, are small and makes beautyful sunstars. But my first vintage lens was the Zeiss Planar 50f1.4 from my father. He bought this lens at 1980 for his Yashica. Adapted on my sony He looks very great and sharp, with own charakter.
Nice video about film era lenses! I agree that It's really fun adapting to digital mirrorless. Years back I tried adapting lenses to DSLRs, but I much prefer the current cameras because of all of the focus aids that show up in the camera's EVF. My current favorite is the Asahi Super Takumar 50mm f1.4 (pretty sure I have the non-radioactive 8-element version... but I'm going to verify that pretty soon, lol)
I use old Minolta lenses on my A7R4
Voightlander prices are much better and superb in build and optics. And not heavier too
I have some on me on this trip. I didn't want to overwhelm this video with too many lenses. 🤣
Welcome to Singapore! I find manual lenses look really awesome with the A7c, especially voigtlander m mount lenses (cheaper alternative to leica but still pretty cool)!
Sure these manual lenses can have unique aesthetics. I will never go back to Manual focusing for professional work though. It's like saying I'd rather get around by horse and buggy than a tesla cause its more romantic and charming
I came from a film SLR camera. It took me many years b4 I can convince myself that digital photography is good. Somehow film and digital photography is vastly different. To make the story short, I have to learn digital photography from scratch even though I was quite knowledgeable in film SLR.
You missed a really big sell factor for manual lenses. You can buy super fast, high quality lenses really cheap. Especially if you are buying used Canon FD lenses or Minolta lenses. A cannon FD f/1.8 set me back only $50. For those wanted a more intimate shooting experience, but also want high quality glass, manual is the way to go.
For all my photos and sometimes for filming I use a 50 year old lens with an adapter on my Sony. 50mm f1.8 is my favorite in my collection of old glasses.
What adapters do you recommend?. I can't seem to get any of my lens to properly focus on my a6000
You want a killer manual lens, get the knockofftilux ttartisan 50mm f0.95. I have the red one. It's still my favorite prime.
Your M mount lens collection is not complete until you try out some of the best offerings from Voigtlander especially the 35mm F2 and 50mm F2 APO-Lanthar.
I got a Canon EOS-M and a TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 manual focus lens to take to Maui. $109 for the camera, $73 for the lens. Easy and light for travel. June 29-July 6 (2022) in Maui.
I have a set of Leica R. Once you get used to the images, G masters are realllllly depressing
These look great. I’m planning to buy at least one Voigtlander Apo-Lanthar that should perform very similarly.
Guys do your self a favor. Dont sell your FE lenses for M lenses, as they’re not designed for Sony hence you get soft and wacky corners. Voigtlander FE l lenses are the ones to get if you want manual focus lenses.
I already wanted a nice manual Voitlander lens, this is the video that is gonna get me to just buy it and love it.
Ive adapted lenses on my A7iv, but it wont take a picture
I still have an 50mm Asahi Super-Takumar f1.4 m42, cca $250 and it's awesome, but unfortunately useless for children while they are running and playing fast.
Great content. I have some high quality Minolta Rokkor. When using "vivid" does that only apply to .jpg?
new to photography can someone explain, with a lens that doesn't have AF I have to manually focus the ring for every shot or does the camera autofocus get used with a manual lens? And then a lens with AF and camera with AF how does that work ?
its Fun to use Manual no Focus Breathing... and Sharp the Photos...
Welcome to Singapore! Maybe you can do a photo walk with us fellow Singaporean photographers? :o
If you put the aperture to infinity and everything is in focus are you really focusing with that adapter?
hey i wonder if i can use the zone focus using an apsc sensor with no problem or if it changes because somehow its made for full frame
Sir... I got Sony alpha 6400 camera and Sirui anamorphic lenses, can you please suggest me the adapter which helps for auto focus..
Is it possible to set focus confirmation in the manual lens in the Sony A7 IV as in the Canon?
Jason, big fan love your videos. I'm the family photographer who also takes vids and photos of wildlife, and sports. Thanks to your vids... learned how to tweak my camera. Thanks buddy ! But , gonna stick with Sony's incomparable AF,
Welcome to Singapore. How are you coping with the smeaared corners for 35mm and wider? Been trying to come to terms that my zeiss 35mm f2 is useless on my sony
I'm psyched to see channels talking about manual shooting now. I think people are curious about it but it feels a bit daunting. Seeing Hines talk about it and literally show his methods. Now you're getting in there too. I think it'll be the encouragement people need to give it a try. It really is one of those things that breaks photography wide open for a lot of people. And it's honestly just super fun. And who doesn't want to have fun shooting?
Oh, and vintage lenses are cheeeeap. I got a Helios 44-2 58mm F2 and a Jupiter 37a 135mm f3.5 for about $115. That's for both, shipped. The Helios is a character monster, the Jupiter is sharper than my modern lenses. We don't have to spend Leica/Loxia/etc prices to get great results 🤘🤘
I love the Helios 44-2 I also have a mir1b
@@overboos I see Mir come up a lot in the vintage crowd. Gotta check them out. Next on my list is a fast 35, so maybe I'll toss that one on the list. Been looking at Takumars currently.
With my A6400 I have been shooting DMF mode for a while because of it's habit of slightly missing the subject. There's something nice about that extra bit of control.
I use Voigtlander 35 F1.2 with Techart Pro Af adapter
The "Please Shop Responsibly" disclaimer is the real hero of this episode. Leica glass is so yummy.
I'm glad you acknowledged my lil disclaimer 😂
What auto focus adapter would i need for Sony A7 and Pentax lens? Tks
hi jason! jayson here from singapore! hope to see you here! wanted to take a selfie with you..
Would like to know their comparison to Loxia equivalent lenses!
sony cmos has a fliter layer on it and make the M-mount lens edge bad.
Dude if you're jumping into leica glass get some R lens those are work horse's
Been using that for like 8 years, I really love the analog lenses on digital bodies! And been using the techart first and then the fotodiox mkii adapter on my Sony, it's true that it isn't perfect, but it is still goddamn good!
Manual on my Sony A7R4 70 % of the time. Vintage is another entire rabbit whole.
I have my A7iii for professional shoots since I need AF and my Leica for rangefinder manual goodness 😂
Hey Jason ! Is there a EF Autofokus Version too ? Maybe it’s possible to test the zeiss milvus lenses ?
manual is ok for landscapes terrible for everything else
No voigtlanders f/1.2? That's a crime.
have you ever tried out the Voightlander lenses for A7?
Damn, the prices & demand are gonna be skyrocketing now 😅 Love the video!
Welcome to Singapore Jason n Vivian.
Just a questions and shooting in Singapore!? How do you deal with your lens and displays fogging up when you leave the air conditioning ?
You got to just clip it off and let it adjust, or keep you camera in a bag that doesn't get too chill. You can always bring qtips and dry it off too.
I haven't really noticed...
Hi Jason and Vivian I hope you both are enjoying Singapore!😊
I started using manual/legacy lenses since I got my Sony body .. got the minolta 50 1.4 pf.. used it for most of my videos. Super underrated . Insanely good
With high-res evf & focus peaking or high-res lcds why not....
Manual is more like classic photography & great practice.
To _'Auto everything'_ is blasphemy
I shoot primarily on old manual lenses, as I love the image feel, versus the modern lenses.
First time I’ve seen you and the timing on some of you’re commentary made my day hahahaha
Leica Summicron 5cm F2. Dual range, Solid brass. 337 g or 11.9 oz
Hope you enjoy your stay here in Singapore Jason n Vivienne..
Does the manual AF adapter work for video too?
You should try the Voigtlander e-mount lenses.
I'm over here waiting for that Jason Vong medium format film content
Welcome to Singapore :) Hope you enjoy your time here
Singaporean here, Welcome to Singapore!
UA-camrs nowdays: "Panasonic Lumix is shit because the AF totally sucks, Sony is the best evaar" --- also youtubers "Sony A7 iv with manual lenses" --- :D
lol! I feel attacked! I did mention I will still be using the AF lenses for videos
@@JasonVong oh sorry Jason, didn't mean to attack you 😬✌️
You didn't even address the topic of the video.
Hahaha. Been doing manual lenses for years now. Started with Carl Zeiss Jena, Rittrons and Leica. Just love 'em! 😍 💕👌
Just selled my RIVa + all my GM lenses. After 13yrs of Sony. Yea, i still remember DSLRs but even the mirrorless stuff Is too heavy, too big and (digital) too much work at the computer for my taste.
Now i only use my 24yrs old Leica M6 with 2/35 & 2/50 and take photos in a different but still exciting way.
It's work on Samyang Manual lenses?
That Zeiss 35f2.8 and Leica 28f2 looks peak. I'm usually not a fan of Zeiss character though, they like a nervous bokeh, so we'll see. But that 28f2 could be my ideal lens.
ooof this Leica 28mm... i wasn't a fan of the 28mm until I shot with this.
oooo Singapore!
Hope you enjoy the hawker food stalls 👍🏼
Be careful with the heat and stay hydrated 🌊
getting rekt out here
@@JasonVong 🥵
My current favorite manual lens is the 50mm f2 loxia for Sony, awesome!
Others I have/had:
-35mm f2 Biogon m mount, sold an regretted, very nice lens
-Voigtländer 65mm f2 APO for Sony, really cool, but sold because heavy beast
-7artisan 35mm f1.4, using it with close focus adapter on my Sl, cool, well build and after calibration, really good, not outstanding as the 50mm loxia
-21mm f2. 8 loxia for Sony, sold, too wide and not as good as expected
-TTartisan 90mm f1. 25 Gfx mount, brand new, never used but planning to get a Gfx100s one day, or better a newer model with less Mp but PDAF
Dang. Us low bowlers are out of luck.
I have the a6000, what manual 50mm would you recommend?
Adapters are less than 20$ you can get so many vintage lens that will render amazing photos. I’d suggest any fast 50mm f2 or faster shoot wide open it’s a lot of fun.
I have the 7Artisans 7.5mm, TTartisan 60mm macro, TT 55mm f1.4 and the 7Artisans 35mm f0.95 all of them perform great and quite affordable, cheaper than high end legacy lens like some Canon FD's, Minolta MD's and of course Leica lenses.
A day before, I was thinking about this set and you dude made the video about it! What a coincidence! I am curious to watch your further videos. It also would be nice to see something with old manual lenses under 300$.
Need to visit more places in singapore ?? I see you at dondonki at orchard road 🤣
I literally just came back from there!
Welcome to Singapore!
Every lens in existence is already a manual focus lens if you want it to be.
Just make adjustments on your camera or lens, and presto - manual focus.
He evolved, only backwards
You definitely need to make a review of the Contax T2!!!!
In my case like a filmmaker of music videos I use AF just in chasing but all the time I have my sony cameras in MF but with the Manual Assistant active to fast my focus in the object, but like said Nice One the second part of Jason it’s gonna be “why I’m switching back to AF” 😂 😂 😂. Great video master.
yay finally you r in singapore
these lens princes are TGH! whats the point? Fun, but expensive.
I don't know and I don't get it either. He could of shot those with a samyang lens and you could not have noticed a difference in quality and saved $3K. It has to be the experience and a class status thing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.
I am almost always using a Leica a
Q2 and Sony a74 with zeiss 55 1.8 I understand your point of view.
@Jason Wong - Great video. Did you notice vignetting and light fall off when using the Leica M lenses on Sony body?
I am about to get a Sony A7IV to use with my Leica M lenses but have being reading mixed reviews about this combo.
I’ve been using my M lenses on my Panasonic S5 when I want a small video option. The only thing I miss is close focus. The weight and size is incredible though.
How well does m mounts work on a video. I use Leica m for photography and have a load of Leica lens. Now want video so thinking a small zv-e1 and then just use my lens when I want video. Is it any good and is it hard to use manual.
@@chinchin9127 I actually enjoy it. I don't really like using the new focus-by-wire lenses. I tend to use vintage lenses, or my M lenses, when I'm shooting video. You can use peaking and zoom in for critical focus. It is nice to have a full frame sensor with the lenses too.
Too bad that you using Sony with the thick sensor cover plate so the corners are pretty mess when it come to using M mount range finder lenses. They usually work better on Panasonic and Nikon FF body's or on Fujifilm apsc due to the same phenomena (thinner cover plate less diffraction and distorsion in corners you will get) .I would definitely spend money on that Metabone or AF adapter but on the close focus one and probably on a new 7artisans which transmits 6bit code data to the camera.
2nd
Yes Jason you have done it again, great Subject matter and information, thank you for sharing, cheers brother.
Welcome to Singapore dude. To make up for the humidity, we have pretty cool second-hand gear stores that stock some rare stuff. Check it out while you’re around.
And may I also suggest, exploring outside of the touristy areas. Check out the housing estates in Singapore for a more in-depth look into what makes this city tick :)
