- How to fix a surfboard ding
We have all been there… your travelling through a far of an exotic country you just about to go out for a surf and the wave look great but you find out you got a ding from your last session or you damage your board on the way there… what do you do? Some surfer might sit out the session some might use the handy old gaffer tape or a spare sticker to help keep it watertight and psychos among you might just go in any way, you know who you are…
But what if you had the ability to do a pretty good patch up job on the run to help make your board as good as new.
Its always good to know how to fix your surfboard dings and making a half decent repair can keep your stoke levels at an all-time high. Having a quick solution to make your board watertight and still perform at the highest level that you can do instantly is a must-have skill for every surfer. Especially if you on a long surf trip having a quick guide can be all the difference.
Rember this is a quick patch-up job to get you through your trip or a few sessions and not a comprehensive fix but its just the bare essentials you need to have in an emergency ding repair kit to get you through
Essential Items
• Solarez Epoxy Resin kit with (coarse) grit sanding pad.
• Swiss Army Knife/ pen knife/ scapula
• Sand Paper (Fine 120-180 grit) s small sheets
• Fibreglass (various sizes or patches) - Get from local shaper or match of FiberGlass cloth. (from a shapers supply biz)
EXTRAS
• Sanding block
• Scissors

For those who are perfectionists, you can add color after the first resin layer before fiberglass and second layer
What substance to use for coloring? Any paint or food coloring?

I never cut a "plug" out of a board! Grind and glass then sand again. Strong as original
Yeah and he took out a chunk of foam when he cut it out which was my main gripe. Woulda filled that with some qcell first
Could I just use epoxy no fiber flasssheet?

Better to use Polyester Resin or Epoxy Resin depending on the foam material. Polyurethane can take both resins, EPS foam only Epoxy. Should have used Q Cell, or at least Silica. Also could have added a piece of foam to have perfect buoyancy. But I guess this video is for those already mixed kit like Zolarez as depicted.
what grit o the sanding paper?
I use around 320 for the actual resin then soft sponge a lot of it
So you just use resin? Not a resin and hardener mix? And I just finished with my board and there is just a micro little spot I think I over sanded. Any thoughts on what to do? Can I just add some resin or do I need to add fiberglass cloth too and then resand. Also what is the best type of paint to use to paint entire boards?
He used solarez which reacts with UV radiation to harden

How about the bottom part of the wavestorm. Because I don’t think it’s fiberglass.
Is it a plactic bottom...if so find plastic bonding epoxy and just fill it with it level it with tape it should cure hard and flat
use SPONGEREZ or a hot glue gun
Basically you sanded off the new fiberglass layers since you created a lump of brand new glass on the deck surface level... sanding a bit more is needed to create a small gap/dent where the resin and fiberglass will sit without creating a lump on the original surface (that lump is the new material you just applied and sanded off) 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

what happens if u dont use the glass
You can do it without the fiberglass too, it just adds more strength and is recommended for bigger dings. Solarez has an Instagram with videos on how to use it.
The tube of ding repair has fiber glass in it ...dont need the extra piece at all

You need to use gloves and a mask when sanding glass. It will get in your skin and cause irritation for the rest of the day.

In the first batch of resin, mixe it with microbaloons 50% and then it will look like the original foam.
Does the epoxy work even on poly boards??
Use the yellow tube of polyester resin repair ...dont mix
I use epoxy to fix all types of resins. Have for 40 years now. It actually makes a weak poly board stronger

duck tape is better
Is the fiberglass necessary or is the solarez enough?
enough to solarez alone if you just want it to be watertight

I start off slightly rough, yet stroking it lightly, to get the big bumps taken care of.
Don’t push too hard.
Then, you want to go smooth for the finish.
Always nice to finish ‘er off with a bit of gloss.

Where do you get fibre glass?
search out your local shaper and see if he'll bro deal you a piece. Worked for me.
I just bought a shitty longboard for cheap, i really dont care for aesthetics i just want it to be water tight until i can afford a better one, i will defenitely do this.

Yes but is sometimes cracks without hitting it

@@WhiteGhost21 the sun hardens it and then its done curing. like anything the sun will eventually damage it if you just leave it forever in the sun but with proper care surfboard repairs last forever with solarez

You don't unless you want to cut out the area as if it were a ding. Pressure dings are badges of honor (battle wounds). Don't repair them unless they're super deep or cracked

That solarez has fibres already in it for strength on that size ding, didn't need glass which he sanded off anyways, fail!!
Never ever do this. Your ‘fix’ will get wrecked with any pressure to that area.
