ECM motors are the biggest scam going on in refrigeration evaporators, especially on WI Freezers. They sell them on evaporators as energy efficient, cost saving, the whole nine yards. But they dont last long, and if you have to replace them, it is now $800 list price.

Maybe it’s because he can diagnose, start and then fix a problem which is immensely satisfying to a guy who’s in a profession where a good proportion of the business we pitch for fails to complete and job satisfaction is wanting.

Small piece of advice. Before blowing that much dust in the air make sure there aren't and smoke detectors in the area. I talked to a maintenance guy that evacuated a 16 story building because of a dust cloud.
Hi bud. Another great video with great technique. Here’s a warning from your British sparky subscriber.........be careful ‘bumping’ larger motors. The starting inrush current sets up a powerful magnetic field in the stator (and rotor) which, if you switch off the supply whilst it is established, will collapse and can cause a pokey back EMF. Where does that EMF manifest itself? Usually right across the contacts of the device you are using for switching! Can quite easily cause a ‘flashover’ arc between phases, phases to earth or even on the same phase (as at this point there is a voltage difference). Nasty. Take care!

Yeah, the way it came out black instead of just a brown color definitely makes it look like rubber dust from tires, especially given the parking garage environment. What a dumb place to put equipment though.
Try doing emergency hot work in a mall or a bank. Getting an "on the spot" hot work permit is almost impossible 😁. I just usually wing it.. haven't been yelled at yet.
Again, a totally interesting and absorbing video from you, I'm retired and from a totally different trade but, wow to have time to see behind the scenes in these locations, I just love it. I'm from the 1950s generation so we learned and repaired stuff and got a trade and didn't get time to look at the other tradesmen working. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos.
Holy, all that black. Looks like you cleaned out a couple of thousand miles of wear from the tires scrubbing in the parking lot. Today, I replaced a plastic fan with 4 blades to an aluminum with 5 blades. A little smaller in diameter but pulls a lot more air.

They should have soft starters on those tubeaxial fans to save on belts. Even better would be varying the speed with temperature and it might save them more money on electricity.

Whenever property management has tried to run me off and I lie and tell them the guy with the truck keys is in the restroom with diarrhea. Usually buys me an hour or so if not more.
Totally understand about the "just do it" on the coil cleaner and water. It's a whole lot better to ask for forgiveness instead of asking permission. That way, by that time you have already done the right thing, without having to deal with people saying "no." You were lucky to find a water hookup there, actually. It is pretty sad about the energy efficient ECM fans. That is a pitiful example of equipment tampering, in my opinion. And they didn't even hook it up in a professional manner. The cost of energy savings will likely not make up for the added repair costs due to the cheap construction of the motor, and the short life it will give. Wild about those fans being run to the degree that the belts were almost gone! You would think they would have noticed the slowly decreasing speeds before it reached that state!
I remember repairing many of those Tube Axle Fans. Those suckers ARE loud. Some of the larger ones you have to wear hearing protection when running them after a repair. The direct-drive one's are even louder.
Just stumbled upon this. I am an Electrician 30 plus years commercial,industrial and institutional. Fact. Management seldom cares. They smile and nod approvingly. They're polite. Before you are gone they forgot. Parking structures are magnets for dirt. But you are correct. You have to communicate. The other issue is property management. They employ so called engineers. Seldom do they do the job they were highered for. Management is just as bad they won't get off their wallet. Good job.
Make sure to replace the bearings, instead of greasing them. They are probably shot after all this dust from brakes and tires are getting into them. When you grease the bearing, they will continue to work a short while but dry out quickly again. They probably have non-shielded bearings, so go for the more expensive shielded ones to get rid of this issue :)
I can't wait to explain to my boss that he probably needs door seals on our walk-ins. The freezer has a few hundred mini-stalactites growing, there's a thick layer of frost on all the boxes, I had to chip some ice away to close the door last night, and yesterday morning it took two employees kicking the crap out of the door to break the ice away inside so they could get it open. Then again, this is the same guy with 13 flour-clogged filters with negative air balance so bad that I have a hard time opening the front door. So I'd be wasting my breath... And behind these masks, with the hot humid outdoor air being pulled in through the door and drive thru window, my breath is precious!
Anonymous tip to the City Health Inspectors about the Freezer or even OSHA (Ice sealing the door is very likely an OSHA Violation - ESPECIALLY if someone is liable to get hurt trying to oped a frozen door)...

Hey Chris! I used to hate those types of calls. Really? 9pm? When I was working our company took care of Scripps hospitals 🏥 in San Diego county. Most of these have facilities folks who take care of them 7 days a week. They receive calls all day for everything. They sat on this one no cooling call for their kitchen till 9 pm Sunday. I didn’t finish with the call till 3:30 am. You know the routine. Check in. Get the keys. The facilities guy has no idea where anything is. Jeez! I don’t miss that at all. Great video Chris. You know the frustration is real when there isn't even a single swear word in the video. lol It's crazy the conditions they expect these machines to operate in, then want to pinch pennies after they start to malfunction...all while providing the illusion of a well manicured parking garage.
The heat in those environments is no joke and some of the installs ive seen are rough... almost a dozen condensers in a covered parking lot, all in a line, close to the wall, hardly any air flow and constant issues with units running high head etc..

I have got the airline hoses all connected a few times at the end of shift when about to shut all doors and roller doors at work and blasted down the walls and shelves and under benches . All the doors are open no-one else there and blow all the shitty dust out . We have a lot of grinding and punishing dust that just gradually gets everywhere. It feels good to do it. Regards Don
Lots of opportunity with calls like this to sell service contracts. A lot of these expensive after hours service calls can be prevented by keeping up on maintenance. Not to mention saving the customer money by extending the service life of the equipment, finding problems before a breakdown occurs, keeping the equipment operating efficiently, and avoiding the cost of damaged product in the freezers from equipment failure.
I work in a service industry as well. The who, what, where isn't important. I tell all my offices, maintenance is king! Regular maintenance will save so much money.
I've dealt with those axial air circulation fans. The belts can be a big pain in the ass. I've dealt with some big fans that have 6+ belts. Naturally, they're never installed with maintenance in mind. When they trip due to over-current startup, you have to be really precise with your belt tension, leaving a small amount of slack so they slip a little during start up - just to reduce the inrush current. Of course if they're not 24/7 units, starting and stopping a lot will eat belts, but there's not much you can do. VFDs and soft starters also solve that problem.

In that situation I would have done the same especially with the drain being there and made sure to quickly wash the area down when finished. The only thing I probably would have done differently is put some safety cones up just to CMA.
You cut through the BS and got the job done! That's a judgement call! With no one around and no cars below that was the right call! You should have had another technician with you for safety reasons becouse one around if you get hurt ! Also it's easier and faster to get the job done and you will feel less fustration if someone else is with you too! Thanks for another awesome video!
Man I love rebuilding computers and working on cars, something about this kind of combines the two for me. Like the condenser and belt maintenance and seeing lots of the similar tools you use as far as diagnostics
I washed grocery store condensers on roof. they had a black tar ROLLED roof, coil cleaner caused tar coating around units to turn white, shopping center owner said his roofers said it was oil damage, that i had spilled oil all around the stores units while working on them,tried to charge me $27.000 after my insurance company and a letter from coil cleaner manufactor he shut up. manufactor said to always test their product on a small piece of roofing first. bought from united refrigeration .
Chris, I get what you are saying. You wouldn’t want your employees doing what you did because the liability is on you because you are their boss. But that being said because you are the boss you are able to take risks that you wouldn’t otherwise take as an employee. I see it as it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission, but that always depends on the situation, like you said situational awareness, and I couldn’t agree more.
When you decided to wash down the cond coils, i thought the customer is going to complain because you didn't warn them. As well as the added cost of belts and ot. But then you said you're the owner and i figured you got a brass pair and would take the loss if they didn't approve of the charges. Guess your gamble paid off. I always try to get verbal consent if not written for any service. CYA
We have tons of the Inline fan's at my job and yeah they can be a pain to work on ! to change the pill block bearings we have to pull off the Ductwork it sucks ! but at least there it was all open for you :) Nice job on the cleaning I like how you really care about all the units most guys would go do the one unit and just leave it at that !
First rule I have had to adopt, ask the office idiots. They'll have meetings and generally waste time while you sit about waiting to get a call out in the crazy hours. Guaranteed if you don't ask them and do the right thing they'll kick your butt. Big companies want the best of both worlds, cheap maint and long life from whatever stuff they buy....... good luck with that idea..... Looking in that fan case it looks like the belts were catching/rubbing on the case walls, the black marks gave that a way so were possibly on the slack side or had stretched over time. Great to see someone going a bit further than others would to do it right, despite the worry of the business owners getting a bit annoyed.
I’ve cleaned those once units once like almost 10 years ago. Water gets everywhere! I just did a hit and run type of stuff to get out of their garage, lol. Good times.
We have a liebert in a parking garage that doesn't allow us to wash condenser. We literally have to pump it down and take condenser offsite to wash coil. I hate working in malls, parking garages, cities in general.

Absolutely love the viper cleaners. Used the spray cans often at my previous job. Safe on coils minimal clean up and oh so effective.

Great trouble shooting observations. Couple of things that are needed with HVAC techs and that is knowledge and honesty.
I think I'm gonna be a damn good tech by time I'm done with school and watching all your videos I for sure have a head start.

I work in a service industry as well. The who, what, where isn't important. I tell all my offices, maintenance is king! Regular maintenance will save so much money.

I know where that is and that area on a normal day can be really busy there. Be glad its still during covid.
I've dealt with those axial air circulation fans. The belts can be a big pain in the ass. I've dealt with some big fans that have 6+ belts. Naturally, they're never installed with maintenance in mind. When they trip due to over-current startup, you have to be really precise with your belt tension, leaving a small amount of slack so they slip a little during start up - just to reduce the inrush current. Of course if they're not 24/7 units, starting and stopping a lot will eat belts, but there's not much you can do. VFDs and soft starters also solve that problem.
Yeah these ones run 24-7 I'm trying to talk them into vfd's and temperature controls but....$$$$$
@@HVACRVIDEOS That is a funny thing. Spending a bunch on 3 tiny ECM evap motors to maybe save a few kW a year, but 4 much larger circulation fans running 24/7. these "smart" energy companies have a hell of a racket. We're in the wrong business

In that situation I would have done the same especially with the drain being there and made sure to quickly wash the area down when finished. The only thing I probably would have done differently is put some safety cones up just to CMA.
You cut through the BS and got the job done! That's a judgement call! With no one around and no cars below that was the right call! You should have had another technician with you for safety reasons becouse one around if you get hurt ! Also it's easier and faster to get the job done and you will feel less fustration if someone else is with you too! Thanks for another awesome video!

Man I love rebuilding computers and working on cars, something about this kind of combines the two for me. Like the condenser and belt maintenance and seeing lots of the similar tools you use as far as diagnostics

Sometimes it's better to take a chance and ask for forgiveness vs asking for permission.
I washed grocery store condensers on roof. they had a black tar ROLLED roof, coil cleaner caused tar coating around units to turn white, shopping center owner said his roofers said it was oil damage, that i had spilled oil all around the stores units while working on them,tried to charge me $27.000 after my insurance company and a letter from coil cleaner manufactor he shut up. manufactor said to always test their product on a small piece of roofing first. bought from united refrigeration .
Worked in the field 50 yrs ago never changed a dryer added few drops of Christie's drygas to the ref hose . Auto work never had a problem .🤗

I get what you are saying. You wouldn’t want your employees doing what you did because the liability is on you because you are their boss. But that being said because you are the boss you are able to take risks that you wouldn’t otherwise take as an employee. I see it as it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission, but that always depends on the situation, like you said situational awareness, and I couldn’t agree more.

When you decided to wash down the cond coils, i thought the customer is going to complain because you didn't warn them. As well as the added cost of belts and ot. But then you said you're the owner and i figured you got a brass pair and would take the loss if they didn't approve of the charges. Guess your gamble paid off. I always try to get verbal consent if not written for any service. CYA
you could use big bucket of plumbers putty then when you get situations like this you can make a little dam around what you need to wash

We have tons of the Inline fan's at my job and yeah they can be a pain to work on ! to change the pill block bearings we have to pull off the Ductwork it sucks ! but at least there it was all open for you :) Nice job on the cleaning I like how you really care about all the units most guys would go do the one unit and just leave it at that !

I’ve always been told by companies that I have worked for to never use condenser coil cleaner ever.
Reason why I quit service work. Did refer for many many years mainly supermarkets
First rule I have had to adopt, ask the office idiots. They'll have meetings and generally waste time while you sit about waiting to get a call out in the crazy hours. Guaranteed if you don't ask them and do the right thing they'll kick your butt. Big companies want the best of both worlds, cheap maint and long life from whatever stuff they buy....... good luck with that idea.....
Looking in that fan case it looks like the belts were catching/rubbing on the case walls, the black marks gave that a way so were possibly on the slack side or had stretched over time. Great to see someone going a bit further than others would to do it right, despite the worry of the business owners getting a bit annoyed.

I’ve cleaned those once units once like almost 10 years ago. Water gets everywhere! I just did a hit and run type of stuff to get out of their garage, lol. Good times.

We have a liebert in a parking garage that doesn't allow us to wash condenser. We literally have to pump it down and take condenser offsite to wash coil. I hate working in malls, parking garages, cities in general.
Can't you put the condenser in a bigger tub and then rinse the coils off so that the water is collected?
