Just like Thin Lizzy is a massively underrated band, Phil is a vastly underrated bass player. He had a completely unique style of playing, and I have to say you replicate it really well. So many great songs in one short video. Rock on!
Phil was THE shit! I mean he was a rock star from his frizzy hair to the tip of his toes, Mr Cool personified You'd think with all the screenplays and scripts for films/TV out there, surely there'd be a great story in 'the life of a rocker' like Lynott. They've made movies about musicians that did nothing compared to what he crammed into his short life.
Man I am ashamed to say I slept on Thin Lizzy!! I did not realize how insanely awesome they are until about a year ago. I've got a pretty good idea when I hear a new one I'm listening to Lizzy, but the second Phil sings it's confirmed. What an amazing frigging band man. I had to stop during "The Pressure Will Blow" and go listen to it. It's now on the playlist. Thanks man. Now I have to listen to the whole discography. So many gems in there. Emeralds shall we. Another tune that blows my mind away
I'm so thankful I found this video. Phil was a major hero to me also, your bass playing is incredible and it's makes me so happy to hear the clarity of his Bass lines.. Thank you for posting this! Cheers mate!
Phil lynott, i have been a fan for many years, and i belived i was the only one that thinked he was so great at the bass, nobody else talked about him...cool that you tribute him alittle :) best regards from Norway.
Thanks for doing this, bud. I'm the same as you, Philo was the sole reason I picked up the bass and made fist of it. I've been listening to Lizzy every day - at least twenty-six years. Nobody comes close. Although I thought you might have done Suicide, too. That's not a criticism, by the way!
Hi just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your bass playing. First time I saw Thin Lizzy 79' Phil wore a gold silk shirt, leather pants and white moccasins. He was playing a cherry red bass..God bless.
Wow Greetings from Chicago! Just damn excellent execution picking of Phil, just wonderful! You got it! There is a certain magic Phil had, you’re nailing it! Excellent Better go back and start to re learn some lines I think……….. So impressed Jim
hey man iv been blasting thin lizzy tunes nearly every day if not 3 times a week for the last ten years, just think everything about the band is incredible, im irish but its most defo not the reson i pick Phil over Nirvana anyday, but i was looking for a video showing phils style playing the Bass, and found just what i had been looking for, Nice one Bud.
And mannn, I do not know how the heck phil played the way he did and sing at the same time Absolutely One of the best of all time, very busy when singing but when i seen this video I now can see the work he puts in Fukin Madness
Excellent video man, great selection of Philo's work. You even pronounced his name right, I've been saying it wrong all these years. Didn't know a lot of these tunes
Thanks a ton for checking it out! I appreciate it. Yeah, he was a proper rock-steady player that created some really nice lines. His playing on the early three-piece stuff is quite interesting, considering he would have to sing as well.
Fantastic! I really enjoyed that! Apparently Thin Lizzy was my womb music. I ended up taking up bass at the age of 16 in 1996 and am a plectrum user (frowned upon😂) Criminally I only recently learnt my first Thing Lizzy song recently when I joined a covers band an now I want to learn more! Thank you! Subbed!
Wow....frigging awesome video. I've always played guitar (mostly rhythm) but I'm just starting out on playing bass guitar & your playing is an inspiration, thanks for posting it
Brilliant playing mate, it used to annoy me that lizzy where so underrated as a band, but i now look past all this crap and think that we as lizzy fans are fortunate that the so called hall of shamers have been losing out for years. Being blind in hearing is far more grave than being blind life.
At the age of 51 my world and all I knew about it has just been shifted. I never looked closely but I always thought it was a P-Bass with a mirror scratch plate. I bought a Squier P-Bass almost 30 years ago because of Thin Lizzy and a few other bands. I still own it, love it and it's my only bass, but I will now retire to a monestary for ten years whilst I try to process this. Ibanez!
Most recordings as a 4 piece were with Phil playing a Fender Precision Bass. He has 2 Fender P basses on stage when I saw him play in 1978 (he played the Rosewood fret version with the Maple fret one behind him). He switched to an Ibanez (initially a Roadstar I think) when Ibanez sponsored him in 1980/81 and had a few different ones. Philomena donated his original recording P Bass to the Irish Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Dublin in early 2108 or so where it is on display, I have stood next to it.
Thanks a ton for checking out my video! Was a fun one to make. Love Phil’s plectrum technique. Yeah, that’s super cool! I really could have kept adding riffs. So many ace ones to choose from!
@@RealerArtist his such an influence on my bass journey albeit not as good as your playing. That plectrum style up and down all the way like an acoustic player is so quintessential Phil! What effects are you using on the opening riff of Dancing in the Moonlight? Is that phaser or flanger? Can I pull it off with a chorus?
@@RealerArtist that would be awesome. Phil is sadly underrated and you can’t get a lot of lessons on his bass riffs. Opium trail!! Wow!! To think he had only picked the bass in 1970 after being sacked from Skid Row!!! 1975 his playing emerald!! Wow.
Very good played! but it really is a shame that you didn't cover the live and dangerous versions instead of some of the songs. I also saw that you didnt tune half a step down on most of the songs. But there is nothing bad at all with the playing. Awesome! hope you drop some more Lizzy content in the future.
Aw man, I’ve listened to that album to death! I used to front a Lizzy tribute. When I played the material live, we tuned a half-step down to get their live sound. Yeah! Plenty of cool riffs to make a part two for sure. Thank you for watching!

Yes, Phil did indeed play in the mid position on the neck a lot of the time. Well spotted! Does it really matter though if the notes are accurate? This isn't a tutorial on how Phil plays. I just thought I'd spread some Lizzy love! :-D
Thank you for shedding light on a true underrated bass hero. Phil had so much groove and attitude in his playing. You did him justice and then some.
