a lot of popular Japanese songs tend to have sad and/or heartbreaking undertones but people just love the beat.
That’s sad and tragic
I heard smth about it being like a stigma where it’s looked down upon talking about death because of the suicide rates in Japan but idk maybe I’m not remembering right

Surprisingly it’s not rare at all to have songs with hella upbeat music while having dark lyrics. Especially from what I noticed Japanese love doing that.
Yes. Loads of Japanese songs that sound beautiful and are famous are... Not so cheerful. Look at Shinunoga E-wa for example.
@@OddlyAnimated1203when the title itself is literslly dark..
finland has a strange phenomenon of extremely depressing christmas songs, some of the more popular ones are:
- a dead little brother reincarnated as bird steals sisters food
- a child who is happy only on christmas
- elder crying and kneeling before the grave stone
- nobody visits grandma
- you’re going to die soon so enjoy christmas
- baby jesus drowning in snow
- child crying on mothers grave
- elfs have insomnia
- the life only lasts a while, and it is dark and unfortunate anyway

country singers singing about the time their lover married their best friend:
Upbeat songs with dark lyrics are extremely common even in english. A very good example would be "Hey Ya!" by OutKast. It's a song about young people failing to find/keep longlasting and meaningful relationships, then burying themselves in short term pleasures because they can't even begin to address their own emotions. It even has a self aware moment where the song pauses to say "Y'all don't want to hear me, you just want to dance" directly to the listener, critiquing them for their own indulgence in short term pleasures instead of pausing to disect the deeper message behind the lyrics.
The music video is literally taking place at a concert. Love that song and its trickery.
And the song "I can't decide", with lyrics like "I could throw you in a lake or feed you poison birthday cake but I can't deny I'm going to miss you when you're gone.".
Detroit rock city by Kiss. A banger of a classic rock song about a guy drunk driving to a concert and dying in a car crash. I know the song is dark ever since I got into Kiss at 10-11, but it's just so catchy and fire, it gets me turnt up every time I hear it.
Similar song, Bullet by Hollywood Undead. Talking about trying to kill yourself with very upbeat music.

One of the two main people in Yaosobi has a background in Vocaloid. A BILLION vocaloid songs are just like that (and known for that), sounding extremely happy, peaceful, or sweet until you hear the meaning. It’s one of my favorite things about it in a way. If I’m sad I can resonate with the meanings, but if I’m just vibing I get to enjoy the more upbeat style music. And the upbeatness of the music helps to cheer me up eventually, even if I know the meaning or am listening to an English cover.
Yeah, and it just hits different when songs are a mix of sadness and happiness
Rolling girl is what I think of...
But weirdly I've always felt like these types of songs aren't *all* happy even tho I don't understand Japanese language, because happy songs in jpop or vocaloid are either calmer, or really in your face happy (electric angel for example)
@@Orangecatenergy No no, I totally understand. Some songs it’s really impossible to disassociate the meaning internally. But like, personally, I can listen to My R and still just enjoy it, even if I know the meaning itself is uhh, sad? But to be fair, I also do that with English songs aha, since I often have to really listen to songs to hear what is said, otherwise I just hear the music and enjoy it.
Vocaloid is so underappreciated. There are so many melodies that would have been considered masterpieces had they been served in a more palatable way to mainstream audience. (Like ussewa and yoru ni kakeru) but then again vocaloids are such an amazing phenomenon. Making songs without having to interact with a human singer may have been the attractive point to many vocaloid-ps
It’s amazing how ppl don’t catch how AKB48 and some kpop songs are actually sad and up beat too, long before yoasobi became a hit.

pumped up kicks is a good example of this in English I think
@@L-sillybrained this song also applies to my saying
There's an English song like this called Bullet I think and it has a different special touch because the whole song is a bright, happy song about committing suicide and it's kinda got the same vibe people who've been suicidal can relate to where you actually commit to the idea and the empty numbness finally fades to a sick sort of relief, I really like how much depth it has
The concept of having incredibly dark depressing songs put into an upbeat tone is one of my favorite types. THE FULL STORY (of the song):
In this world, people are governed either by Thanatos or Eros. If one is governed by Eros, they love life and have the will to live. If one is governed by Thanatos, they get a personal grim reaper who tries to make you commit suicide.
In the beginning, it's shown that the girl is someone who is governed by Thanatos while the boy is governed by Eros. He falls in love with the girl and tries to convince her to not commit suicide multiple times. The very first part, she's about to jump off when he stops her.
He then talks about her grim reaper who the girl looks at longingly and lovingly and he isn't happy with it and is jealous. Here, the boy gets tired of always stopping her from committing suicide and realizes his words are never going to get through to her. One day, he says "I want it all to end" (終わりにしたい) and for the first time, the girl smiles. They then commit suicide together, but it turns out that the girl was his personal grim reaper this whole time and it was him who was governed by Thanatos. And he dies. The end.

Why are Japanese songs actually good but then their meaning is heartbreaking- 😭
I feel that songs like this are very appropriate for Japanese people, who smile to avoid showing their weakness to others even when they are under stress. (Also, Japanese people and people overseas have different sensibilities, so beats that are sad to Japanese people may sound cheerful to people overseas.)
There are a lot of songs like this. One of which is a song called My R.
And I think it didn't get the same treatment from the Vocaloid fans because that one has an English version. (and they don't hide the fact that it's a suicide song)
I actually personally heard the ENG version first before the original. And I still like it.
I cry my eyes out every time, but it's still a really good song.
A lot of people use its instrumental version as background music for videos.

Love songs in Japanese : OMG THE SONG SOUND SO SADDD
Sad songs in Japanese : OMG THE SONG SOUNDS SO LOVELYYT
That’s not really deceitful. There are plenty of songs in English with a happy beat that discuss sad subjects. You only consider it deceitful because you didn’t look at the lyrics, and that isn’t Yoasobi’s fault. It’s a fantastic story. Also, I’m the short story that the song is based off of, the girlfriend isn’t necessarily a grim reaper, she hears death calling and she asks if he’d like to go with her. It’s bittersweet. It’s also good to talk about sad stuff. By burying the subject, people are less aware of the impact that things like suicide have on everyone around them. Also, by not discussing it, people think that it’s shameful to discuss those feelings with other people.
they didn't mean it in a bad way, it's actually interesting how you might think the song is hapy because you can't understand the lyrics
@@ElizabethAftonAndTheIceCream it’s interesting, but only requires a 10 second google search. It’s also super common for people with depression to act over the top happy. Basically, the stories about this girl who kept trying to unalive herself by jumping off a cliff because she has something called the Thanatos disease, but this guy tried to save her, and soon fell in love with her, but she continued to try to jump off the cliff, so it happened so many times that he jumped off with her, but the thing was, she was never even a real human. She was his Grim Reaper ,and he was the actual one who had the disease that’s why he was able to see her.

The song, released on the 15th of December 2019, was inspired by a short story "The Seduction of Thanet" written by Mayo Hoshino. Ikura of YOASOBI told Billboard, "I wanted to maintain the mood of the original work, so I kept my vocals neutral, to blend in with the color of the track. I tried to convey the emotion of the protagonist with my voice." The animated video for the song was published on the 16th of November 2019.
