planning Operation London Bridge | The Crown s06 part 2

- Season 6 Episode 10 : Operation London Bridge was the funeral plan for Queen Elizabeth II. The plan included the announcement of her death, the period of official mourning, and the details of her state funeral.
The reality is, Operation London Bridge was first drafted in the late 60's, updated and reviewed every decade. The queen was involved with the planning of it from the beginning. You might be able to see the reluctance to have this meeting in 2002/2003 as she lost both her mother and sister that year, so speaking about her own death so soon after could have been hard.
That sense of loss in such a short time likely reminded Elizabeth of how her father died so suddenly when she thought she still had time for a normal life. The abdication of her uncle to her father was so fast that there wasn't any time to be a normal little girl anymore. The burden was so heavy, yet in the end, Elizabeth found a way to live & serve her nation as it's Queen.
From what we knew the queen was at quite at peace by 2005 of it
Perhaps that was the moment she decided to live as long as possible. I understand that unknown to the public, the Queen had bone cancer, and much like others of her generation, she remained silent.
I believe firmly that the Queen was a strong woman, and yet when you've shared your life with a man for over 70 years you can't imagine life without them, and I can only pray that she slipped away without pain and that she knew the Lord as her true King.
I believe the right person always ends up with th3 crown eventually.
Seeing my own coffin would freak me out
Don’t worry it wasn’t. The real coffin was much bigger she wouldn’t have fitted in the one shown here
@@ryanhelton1865 yeah , what is it a coffin for ants?
I get it

As a toy collector, it warms my heart to know that Buckingham Palace has its own supply of toy soldiers and diorama set pieces just lying around for business reasons.
Do you ever wargame your toys? I'd love to see the Queen using her toy army in a mock wargame against a Warhammer 40k set :)
I'm sorry but, I am laughing way too hard on this.
I agree with you @theevilascotcompany9255. Like you, I am also a collector of diecast toy soldiers. From the video-clip, I believe that model soldiers are from the W Britain's Ceremonial Collection. From my own reading of royal biographies (as well as depictions of several movies, television shows, and documentaries), the Royal Family are collectors of miniature toy soldiers since the days of Queen Victoria's children. I understand that the late Prince William of Gloucester (the current Duke's older brother) had a collection of toy soldiers and a diorama depicting the Battle of Waterloo.
In fact, across the street from Buckingham Palace, along Birdcage Walk, there is a toy soldier shop outside of Wellington Barracks and next to the Guards Museum. I bought several items from there during my last trip to London in 2018.

When Harry Truman received a briefing on his funeral (O Plan Missouri) circa 1970 or so, he said "it looks like quite the party. I am sorry I will have to miss it."

1:00 Imelda's acting is brilliant
The way she says "it's so sad" while her husband finds the situation fun talking about their funerals.
She's also trying to hold back how haunting it is to look at her own funeral service.
I don't think Phillip finds talking about her funeral fun. They hadn't started talking about her funeral yet; he found talking about his funeral invigorating. I guess feeling that he had control over it and thinking about mortality you can either chose to go into it sad or start appreciating the time you're here.
She said “It’s so sad” and I then I thought to that picture from his real funeral of her sitting all by herself. 😭😭😭
The way she said 'necessary' was spot on too.
I take Philips approach to it too, I want to have control of my funeral. Arrangements will be made according to my wishes, and I get to enjoy the time I have here too
@Stefernie2 and for all the arguments for or against a monarchy still today, I think that symbolically is a benefit of a figurehead, she wearing a mask in social distance at her husband's funeral, meanwhile those working for government had parties at 10 Downing Street the night before, against the rules. There's something about a continuity above the different good and awful governments which set better examples.
Her address to the nation had more of an impact to many than the daily PM/ministers tv broadcasts
"London Bridge is Down."
The words nobody ever thought to hear. Honestly, I thought the woman would live forever and it still doesn't seem real even a year on from her death.
"nobody ever thought to hear?" Most of us knew she was human.
@@SR-iy4gg I know, but she was around for so long it seemed like she'd be there forever. Silly notion, I know.
@@samalvey8168yeah. I think we all knew that she was old and ill but when the time came, we were all surprised. She was a great lady.
There was a meme that Queen Elisabeth II would live on. Sadly, death would object to the idea
@@kitty_s23456I think that’s cause when people reach their 90s you want them to make to 100 before they past
She is SO reminiscent of the queen, the way she speaks, holds herself, everything
But no matter how well she does it - I can’t unsee the umbridge. 😂
I'm pleased that she chose to spend her last remaining days here in Scotland. I think that means alot to most of us Scots, that Scotland was her favourite place, somewhere she could rest.
It was nice to see the reaction of the locals around Balmoral, I feel they had a different level of relationship with the Queen
Also I find it funny everyone always called her German even though she was more Scottish than anything else, via her mother
She died there on purpose to sabotage scottish independence
This ‘being German’ crapola needs to stop. George inherited the throne because he was a direct ancestor of English kings. The royal family since then has been born in Britain. All Anglo Saxons have Germanic origins ffs. Royal families across Europe have all intermingled down the centuries. The royal family is British. Queen Elizabeth being British through and through .
Yes I was happy for Scots to have the chance to show the full Scottish pomp for her, it was quite moving.
2:32 you can faintly hear sounds of the actual marching procession of HM
Oh, good detail!
@@GregorMcIntosh right! Show writers perfectly displayed the Queen’s death without actually showing it. A lot of symbolism
I heard them as well! Such a great detail they added in this scene.
Given what we saw in September 2022 the vast planning becomes explainable. Churchill planned his own funeral with great enthusiasm so did the Duke of Wellington. I am sure the Queen saw it as a great national occasion which indeed it was. On a personal note my grandfather served as a pallbearer at the funeral of King Edward VII. He was a long serving member of the Grenadier Guards who tradionally take that role.
I don't know if the queen saw it as a great national occasion, but she had a massive role in the planning. The glass hearse that carried her coffin was designed by the queen herself.
The funerals for my paternal grandparents were both planned before they passed. You don't have to be a head of state to see the practicality of your family having the details laid out ahead of time. It all probably feels more overwhelming when you're actually bereaved and if you don't know what your loved one would have wanted.
The BBC sound archive holds a recording of a man who, as a child, saw the funeral of the Duke of Wellington in 1852.
Yeah my bloody money like the rest of us.
As far as I remember the Duke of Wellington did not plan his funeral, at least not in the way it was. If I am not mistake he didn't actually want a State Funeral and wanted to be burried at Walmer Castle, but he didn't have much fo a choice in the matter.
It's quite haunting that we actually saw this play out last year. Last year was definitely the Season 7 we did not get on TV but saw play out in real life.
No it wasn’t. This being shown was 20 years ago. It wouldn’t skip 20 years.
@@cfbgI would imagine 2005-2012 would be season 7 and 2013-2022 would be season 8.
@@heyitzLou i think 7 because she ruled for 7 decades.. that number would be more fitting

@@cfbgi was referring to her real funeral. I know this episode was 20 years before, during the time of their Majesties wedding back in 2005.
The music in this scene, and throughout this show tbh, just makes it. When she bends down and stares at that little coffin. Chills
i was a soldier providing medical assistance during the coronation of the king, i met the officer in charge of her funeral, he was also in charge of the coronation, an incredible man whose planning was seen by millions. the planning for both situations was astonishing
Bro cool you mogged us
For those who are curious, Leverton & Sons are the official funeral directors to the royal household.
Amazing how we can see it all play out in our heads from the actual funeral…
You plan your funeral so your grieving family just has to follow the instructions.
I understand that they're doing the funeral stuff for the finale, but the Queen's funeral had been planned since the 1960's, with the plans updated every year apparently. Realistically, the Queen had known about how her funeral would go for nearly 30 years at this point.
Some artistic license is acceptable for a show like this. From a viewer POV it's understandable IMHO that scenes like this weren't shown in Season 2 or 3, when other stuff from the 1960s was shown.
right this is not acurate, thats why its a tv show
I remember her death getting announced in the news on my 26th birthday in 2022. It was not a good birthday, my husband was already asleep because he has had a long work day in the military and I had no intention to celebrate and felt pretty lonely.
Of course I bawled my eyes out when I heard the Queen had died because I was always fascinated by her and respected her and her history. Her being able to keep her head up during so many crisis during her lifetime always gave me hope. And then she was suddenly gone.
A few weeks later after her funeral I was suddenly in the mood to celebrate and it was wonderful. Maybe that's how it was supposed to be, because I would have felt pretty awful if I had celebrated earlier that day and then to hear the news.
Oh my goodness. I havent even seen the episode yet and Im not a monarchist, but this scene is powerful and spine tingling, given what we all saw in late 2022! Well done.
This was SO emotional! Imelda is a phenomenal actress! I hope she gets all the praise and awards she can from playing the beloved Queen!❤
As soon as she speaks you no longer see Imelda but you see Elisabeth II.
quite an accomplisment for the actress who played Vera Drake, an ordinairy housewive involved in abortions and who played Dolores Umbridge.
What a stunningly directed and edited show. Every little thing is just perfect. Except for some liberties they took with private conversations, this show is just pure class. The actors are amazing, the sets, the costumes, hair and makeup, fantastic dialog, intriguing storytelling. This series has got it all. I wish there were more shows if this caliber.
Not perfect. The little Union flags in the model in this scene are wrong🫣
I wonder how it feels to be talking about your own funeral when you are alive. 😢
it's a measure to avoid the pain, it's necessary sometimes. Well, who i am to tell that? Live is live, we shall enjoy the most of it here..
You want to give guidance on what you want done. It isn't easy to talk about, but God will call us home someday and we wouldn't want our relatives to have zero insight on what to do with our remains or belongings.
You don't want to cremate someone who actually wanted to be buried. You don't want to give one of the family heirlooms to the wrong relative or accidentally sell it at an estate sale.
It's a sensible thing to do. I saw my mother, grandmother, aunt and uncles dealing with my grandfather's arrangements after he passed. He hadn't left any instructions, so they were left guessing. It was incredibly stressful organizing everything on top of the grief.
When you reach certain age, it is obvious that you realize that someday, somewhere in the future death will come sooner or later. It is an act of acceptance, the last will for the young and the living.
Her acting in this scene is incredible
Amazing to think she lived on for 16 years after this.

Jonathan Pryce is a wonderful actor the actress playing the queen is wonderful too👏🏻
Prince Philip is awesome here. He keeps it from being too morbid just by being himself and his acid tongue 😂
This is one beautiful scene.
As for the Queen, may she rest in peace.
Memento mori… as important for being alive as it is for dying. Preparation for THE journey of all journeys is very important irrespective of your circumstances.
The weird thing is this was filmed not long after Elizabeth died.
My mother gave me written instructions for her final curtain. It was a blessing everything was taken out of my hands. I could tell busy bodies this was what she wanted.
😢 watching Prof Umbridge be kind and sensitive is mind blowing
The staff with their heads bowed is so subtle and clever!
As a Nigerian, i would say it is a taboo for one to see their funeral plans in African culture.
Culture varies from continent to continent.
Operation London bridge lasted for twelve days following the passing of her majesty Queen Elizabeth II and because it had been planned ahead of time, everyday was done so easily.
God bless the soul of her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II and God bless her son and successor his majesty King Charles III.
they had to throw in "Operation Unicorn" because the scottish proceedings took precedence this time. british monarchs did not pass away in scotland for centuries. so it was a novelty to everybody of the personal included.
The Queen Mother (102) would get up from time to time at 4am to watch the rehearsals for HER funeral, she said she quite enjoyed it. ( she lived at Clarence House of course just minutes from Buckingham palace)
Not a fan of this series but my word they hit the emotional nail on the head with this bit.
Neither am I, I think it's usually malicious rubbish. But just saw this and was curious. Actually pretty good compared to the usual nonsense.
LOOKING AT THIS MODEL AND THEN THINKING BACK TO HER MAJESTY'S FUNERAL IT WAS VERY REMINISCENT OF THE SETUP IN THIS SCENE
They had every detail planned out for a long time.
1:55 with a heavy heart I'm sure Queen Elizabeth was thinking: "so this is what my funeral is going to look like, I can already picture the thousands of mourners on the streets of London, it will be a day long remembered"
I'm not sure even she knew or could have predicted, just how much of an effect it had the world over. Attendees from nearly every corner of the globe, and viewed as far too. Televised for the world, and the world felt the ripples this caused and many of us mourned or stood in silence. I for one didn't believe the news at first, thinking the media had it wrong like they have before. As did many more globally. Even the most closed off nations of the world, and old bitter enemies of the crown sent offical letters of either condolence or mourning in one form or another. Speeches from Putin, messages from Iran, North Korea, and even China. She will be missed and she will be remembered.
*Spoiler for final episode*
I was a little girl during the time represented in part 2 of season 6. It’s the only season where I could say, this is the queen I remembered. I remember wondering if I’d get a day off school when the queen died. Who could have guessed I’d be well into my 20s by the time she finally died. The last scene in the final episode made sense to me, as she walks steadily to the door which represents death, but she takes her time getting there. She hung on for as long as she could.
She didn't just 'hang on' but she did all she could to keep herself useful- as it turns out she used a Red Box the day of her death in which she put notes for her son. It also needs to be said that she had had to contend with having to go through, triage, sort through, read, make notes and sign on then package back X number of documents and papers every single day of her reign with the exceptions of her own birthday and Christmas!
Meanwhile ricky gervais: "just throw me in a ditch and use my would-be funeral money to help local businesses"
Every head of state eventually reaches a point where they have to discuss what they want done when they die. Here in the US all of the former presidents, except one, have detailed plans in place for their funeral. Many ordinary people have the conversation at some point. I have a letter with my will outlining my wishes. It can save a lot of guess work for people likely already under emotional strain.
Nothing compares to the British way when it comes to these things. That’s what happens when the foundations of your society are millennia though.
Except one.... let me guess, the type with the orange face?
Exactly
I lost my dad 2 yrs ago and a death wave followed. A few months later, I decided to start writing my will and I've put together a personal property memorandum so in the event I die unexpectedly, whoever is in charge of my estate has a guide on what to do with my things and doesn't have to make guesses on things.
@@johannesnicolaas Or the youngest of them. Of all the current ex-presidents, Obama will live another 2-3 decades.
@jec1ny Is it true that drawing up their funeral plans happens in the first weeks of office because when a prior President was assassinated nobody knew what to do
Just imagine how difficult it must be for the Queen to see her own funeral being planning😣😔💔
Very tasteful series, finale, touching upon IRL passing with dignity and class
I started thinking about mine at 6 years old. The same with my mother. When she passed away, when I was 50, I was done taking care of the funeral in 35 minutes. Mine is planned. It's no big job. Casket, vault, my mother knew what stone she wanted. That was done 40 years ago. We visited her parents, and saw her's and my names on stones next.
Philip’s smile is worth an Oscar😂
Now that's how to plan funeral arrangements.
exactly, many past kings and queens had to plan this, and even future kings and queens will have to plan this as well
0:29 you know it's real when the High Sparrow gets involved. LOL
I am not even British but cried twice, for the real queen and the Crown queen
"Hello ma'am/your majesty, how are you today? Oh btw we're planning your funeral"
The Queen wouldn't have been surprised that the Duke's funeral had been planned, nor would she have been squeamish about the planning of her own. Both were just another part of Royal duty.
And when the real thing happened it was flawless magnificent and truly moving 👑
Queen - "And in terms of age I'm only-"
Philip - "EIGHTY."
Queen - "...Yes alright..."

Sounds like a cool code name. What you say Vader?
The music is quite brilliant here..
Only Princess Margaret could give the perfect side eye to a coffin as it passed by.
I'm sure many kings and queens of the past went through this, even future kings and queens will go through this as well, after all it is important to plan this
You will always live in my heart ❤️
2:06 They are using the OLD "Union Flags" 1606--1801, (at lease they are not using the rare "Scottish variant" which had the St Andrew's cross on top)
There's watching what September 19 2022 looks likee
Like Pharaohs of old who also planned for their funerals.
the plans followed old protocol most of the time. different tombs, same stuff :)
I dont know how id feel or react seeing a minature diorama of my own royal funeral. 👑⚰ But this scene really interested me in The Crown. 👏
This scene is very true. All royals plan their own funerals years in advance
There's many stories of those facing their death. Elizabeth's is one. But no greater by any manner.
If I were a Royal my funeral plans would be as follows 1. My body is to be cryogenically preserved. 2. Every tax paying adult is to be given $100.00 to with what they wish. 3. My Body is to be loaded on to a rocket ship then launched into space with the hopes that if alien life exists they might have the technology to bring me back to life so I can return and resume my rein.
Lol has the queen ever walked that fast! 😂😂😂😂😂
"What is this, a procession for ants?!"
Nothing could make you feel more like a ghost
I do hope those that paint the figurine has a side business of painting for warhammer 40K
How do they have such conversations. 😅
I feel it’s understandable for people like them
The Crown reference the "Operation X Bridge" plans in previous seasons - that one existed for the Queen, Prince Philip, [then] Prince Charles, etc., all named after relevant bridges. Note that such plans exist for current and former US presidents and first ladies - I recall George H.W. and Barbara Bush referencing theirs in an interview years ago.
It's awkward 😂
I mean... we have to. My grandparents have to tell us what they want when they die
@@MewDenise Other people should keep a copy on file - their house of worship will hold it for you, if desired. A couple we knew died in a house fire - the entire house was gone - and no one else had the funeral plan.
One had a dream about the Duke in Germany RIP HRH 🇬🇧
From the Queen's sense of humor in real life, she would have had fun with all of this. Mainly with the military parade.
This was planned from basically, "The get-go" with updated information.
And Phil left first then she followed
I knew that would happen 🥺💔
He did live longer though.
He went from Red Alert 3 As the USA General to a movie actor, wow
At least Phillip found it fascinating
She fought against Adolf in WW2, and saw many deaths, more than any of us. Lost everybody she had ever loved. Do you think this ceremony scared her? I don't think so.
2:26 Marching and command sounds are heard.
I'd love to see that model army arrayed against a Warhammer 40k army!
1:00 Is the guy with the book Herbert Cadbury in Richie Rich? He sounded quite like him.
You know what amazes me, in a series that has an abundance of "stiff upper lip" type senior civil servant/government minister types, it took them 6 years to cast jonathon Hyde, a man that, I swear to God, was born wearing carpet slippers and smoking a pipe.
In a way it's good they planned it to the last detail...What would happen when that time came.. I watched it on TV...There seemed to be no chance of a mishap..Everyone knew what to do.
That is very sad 😢❤

2:20 -- seeing a depiction of your own coffin. That's harsh.
But in reality the coffin never went on London Bridge.
I think the names are chosen to indicate a crossing over. The Queen Mother's was Tay Bridge.
