Are you kidding everyone.Your work is some of the best out there. You and your worker’s role models of how a business should be running.
Thank you!
I love watching that old Mexican man. At his age and physical condition, it's a joy to watch him helping out. I'm sure coming to work helps keep him alive. Yeah Grandpa!
For sure Larry. He can work circles around any of us.
I always enjoy watching Grandpa helping with the work. What a great inspiration for everyone else. Go Grandpa!!!
Harvey, what a legend. Out there with his cane still pouring concrete
He can work circles around any of us!
Harvey and the Worm Snakes would be a good name for a band.
I wonder what their genre would be! LOL
You and your guys are a tribute to what it means to work hard, have a little fun while doing it and make your customers happy. America needs many more like you all.
Thank you! We do have fun with the work. It makes the day enjoyable.
These crews have all the ingredients for success - the right equipment, well oiled teams, supervision of quality, pizza, humour, and complete willingness to document their work. The proof is there in the pudding! Well done Shawn, Harvey and team on another cracking job well done.
Thank you! I agree. Having the right stuff means you get good results.
King of basins. Another awesome job
👍
WTG Shawn and all the guys and gals on th crew! Great job well done Ron!
👍👍 Thank you
I am so impressed by Ronald work ethic. What a great guy always willing to pitch in.
He's fantastic!
Love that Harley. I’m surprised you didn’t form up for the pour. Thanks Shawn.
I wanted the pour to follow the topography of the area so the water would flow in more naturally.
"Back at the Apt. Complex."......Property owners making good improvements there....Some nice work for you and the concretete guys.....
Yes they're doing a ton of work, roof, siding, parking lots. drainage!
Checking in from Sunny Seattle, WA
I like Seattle!
Love your guys channel. I love how you follow up with the customers after it rains. Wish you guys were in every city.
👍
Hello from the uk 🇬🇧
👍
Great Job as usual. Love that Harley Rake, very versatile for many kinds of jobs. Thanks to Jose'
👍 Thank you!
Thanks for taking the time to educate folks like me who create problems bc can't find no one around my town with half a brain .
👍 Keep looking! I'm sure someone around your area does! LOL
Well I couldn't find anyone. I live in red dirt Oklahoma clay rocks is what I call our yard. We had to do something bc our shop would flood everytime it rain. So thousands of dollars later have a channel drain, a gutter the connects to solid corrugated pipe and both discharge on backside about 6 ft out to the side of our shop. Has corrugated pipe connected to some pvc 90° with one of those green pop-up deals. And it hasn't rained in a couple of weeks I can go out right now and pull the pop-up lid off and water will be in the pvc pipe. Shawn idiots who took advantage of us. Still have a damp floor inside garage after a heavy rain oh yeah this area has great slope why our garage floods.
Get'r done Ron! You can do it!
👍
Your work speaks for itself Sean. Great job as usual. Wouldn’t be surprised if that complex calls for more work. I see a lot of gutters around and I’m sure that’s not their only complex.
I'm hoping so!
You are a good man. You do a good job.
I'm out there combating entropy every day! 👍
Part three is now complete and I am looking forward to seeing part four and I really do like 👍 how your concrete guys put that gentle slope on the concrete surround of that particular drain.
Thank you Jack!
Your crew's simply amazing, always good content keep them coming Shawn.
Thank you Anthony! It's always a pleasure reading your comments.
The only Ron Jeremy video I like, from Gate City Foundation.
👍
Hey question. Why just pour a random circle and not a nice circle or squared off slab? Just set my old off
At around 10 minutes he mentions why he left it like this.
He did it so it’s natural line and a seamless transition so the water can’t dig under the concret3
Like Edna and Swarm said!
@@GCFD No matter what water will still get under it, no? It’s placed next to dirt, straight edge or not. Because of its location it will eventually do the same thing?
Not to mention that brick base where the lid sits on top of. Looking at the condition of it, the customer was better off replacing the entire shaft as the rest of those old bricks will deteriorate much faster.
That Harley Rake is useful
👍
Love watching your work and hello from Gippsland, Victoria Australia.
And Adelaide, South Australia.
Thank you Adam! Thanks for watching! - Shawn
@@GCFD I love that you have a crack at everything yourself like building that trailer. Can’t wait to see the deck! It’s so satisfying to attempt an intimidating task and achieve success. Full respect Shawn 💪🏼
Would have given a lot to work with someone like Sean when I was I high school/college during the summer
Thank you!
Great finish to this job! Great work! That rake really comes in handy! 👍
Yes that rake is awesome. I still have two small parts remaining on this overall job and I decided to make them their own video, because it was getting confusing.
You really made big improvements at this sight, Lots of good video of the project too. The “Harley” rake is a very good tool for the work you do.
Thank you David!
You guys do great work
Thank you!
Your workers are the best around! props to you and the team!
Thank you! I am very fortunate to have them for sure.
@@GCFD French drain man made that PVC video as a shade video toward you. You’re in a different climate. His tests are not accurate. If the system works abs holds up for years what’s the deal lol
Good to see STO bucket in US
Haha!
nice, snake ring hard to find , smile ur the man later
I found another Worm Snake today under a piece of 18" culvert pipe.
When I saw the thumbnail photo I was like that looks nice then saw the before. Yikes 🤣🤣
👍👍
Quick question, what is your Pizza budget?
I enjoy the videos by the way. Very informational and to the point.
same question, always pizza and if it is always from one place shouldn't you to give them a shout out??!!
Yes! I've mentioned the pizza guy we often get a couple of times 👍 He needs a shirt!
@@paulhavens4742 The guy has a mustang, he's doing pretty well for himself already :P
@@silverclaw4 came here to say this... Shawn mentions it in 1 of his videos. Maybe let us know the kind of pizza ordered Shawn?
With how much Pizza I see you guys eat, I'm kinda surprised none of you are starting to turn into Mutant Ninja Turtles...
hahah good one! They loved pizza too.
like your love of nature mate :)
Thank you! It was my first interest in life...
Every video is a lesson learned. Thank you and more please 💩
Thank you! I try to add some cool info to each video!
With your welding skills making a grate that attaches to the thumb to shake the dirt off the rocks should be easy to build.
Great idea!
Is there a reason you use concrete lids ? In Wisconsin they use steel grates.
These lids were already in place so we re-used them.
I'm surprised the boys use their hands for the cement/mortar mix. That stuff will mess your hands up, I know from personal experience.
I thought the same thing. They didn't want the trowels though for that little bit of mortar. 👍
Ronald is the best!
Sir Ronald.
I'm trying to figure out the name of the shape you chose for that concrete slab...
Over Easy
I call it easy for the water to flow onto it naturally. We poured to the lay of the land so the water can naturally flow onto the concrete from anywhere.
I think on this one you should of cut around the the opening the width of the brick so it wouldn’t broken the brick when removing the cement that surrounded it. Just my observation but I’m sure you figured that out back in 2019.
👍 great idea Alex
Thanks for sharing!
thanks for the video
Thank you!
Off camera... "next time you forget your gate city shirt, you're FIRED!!!"
No way! It was funny. I've got more shirts ordered 👍
Was the inside of the culvert inspected to make sure there wasn't issues with any sink holes forming from damage caused to the culvert?
No this one was not. I asked some very specific questions to the maint personnel to make sure it was flowing and I was good with that.
I assume you compacted a layer of clayish soil before pouring concrete. At least that's what I would have done. And was hoping that every angle of the hole had sloping concrete leading into it.
We we compacted the heck out of it with a plate compactor.
I love watching this stuff!! I learn so much. Quick question: sometimes I see what I assume is purple primer and then adhesive brushed on a fitting. At other times I see only some type of purple coating alone? Wondering what that is all about.
We used to use purple primer + clear glue. The reason was I had several cases of clear glue, which requires primer. Now, we use Rain-R-Shine which is a blue primer+glue in one.
I liked watching them put a piece of wood to get that guy out of the hole, was cool. Why not make concrete standoffs to hold the top instead of bricks. I just assume the bricks can fall over but I guess it doesnt matter.
Concrete standoffs would have worked just fine!
We need some Ronald and Jeremy T Shirts!
👍
Yea something like:
Ronald says "we got a full bubble, boss."
"Sorry man, it's my first day!"
@@silverclaw4 that’s what I say if I mess something up. It’s kind of our running joke.
When sticking the brick risers in place, why use concrete/mortar and not just use a tube of construction adhesive?
Wouldn't the adhesive be just as strong as but cheaper than the concrete (no mixing and less time putting the bricks in place)?
It would probably work but we covered the risers in mortar to make them more solid. They also looked pretty good.
@@GCFD Fair enough...
You may have already answered this but I'm curious, why do you guys use the slab of concrete as a storm drain lid and not a 30x30 iron grate?
This job was on a tight budget so they wanted to place the lids back. 👍

QUESTION: Have you guys given any thought to installing 'Pervious Cement' at select jobs?
Yes, more involved, and labor-intensive, but in the proper location and the appropriate application, that would be an AWESOME service/product to offer to customers!
This is a serious question!
Would love a reply/chat!!
Yes but the problem is we have impermeable clay subsoils around here. They don't perc very well so the pervious concrete would just fill up and wouldn't offer much. Great comment and question!
@@GCFD Thanks for the response!
How about a 'Modified Approach'?
[Go with me here...]
Instead of the goal being to replenish the water table, relying on percolating, I was thinking of placing drains below the permeable cement. Using the cement as a 'cap' for a French Drain.
I guess this could be filed under "Surface Water Management".
Hopefully I typed my thoughts as clearly as they're in my head! 😊
Keep doin' what you're doin' ! 👍 🇺🇸
A grown ass man that doesn't eat pizza crust. What the hell, man...
👍
Hey Shawn, nice video once again! A bit mind boggling how to lock down the perimeter of the concrete so there is no water under mining the slab!
As long as the slab is lower than the ground the water should fall onto the slab instead of slamming against it.
Coolio 👍
👍
nice crew. but why the lack of proper form?
I chose not to form it up because I wanted the concrete to follow the natural lay of the land.
Why do you you guys spread hay on top? Thanks.
It protects the bare soil and protects the seeds.
Did the guy using the jack hammer have ear protection on? Also why not form up a nice rectangle etc
Yes we always use hearing, eye, knee, hand protection. I wanted this to conform to the lay of the land so water can drop onto the concrete from anywhere. Making a rectangular pad for a bowl shaped area didn't make sense to me. Great question!
Great job Gate City!
Did you look into the concrete pipe on this same site and investigate what feed it?
We didn't do too much because everything was flowing. The issues were with the drainage basins. 👍
The first one, I believe at least in video order, with the rip rap. Came out next to a concrete pipe. That pipe totally SHOULD HAVE had flow coming from somewhere. The source definitely should have been a low point somewhere... Probably that parking lot with the puddle that the vehicles were driving through.
What I'm saying is that either the parking lot is pitched/graded wrong or something is plugged up
What happened to the big bobcat, I never see it anymore?
I still have it but actually selling it. I never use it!
Who is the man with the walking stick. I see him often
That's the concrete guy Harvey. He can work circles around any of us.

@@GCFD love your work and videos, we have a downpour in NJ right now I was just outside admiring my drainage system I concocted from drivethru pharmacy systems
Hi Shawn,
I'm just curious about your crew. I can recognise some faces from one video to the next, but depending on the size of the job they are obviously not all always there. I'm guessing there are times as well when you don't work (bad weather or busy building trailer etc). How does it work with your crew? What do they do when they are not on duty? Just curious. Don't worry you don't need to turn this into a reality TV show... 😆
Many of my workers have other jobs or are semi-retired. All work with me because they enjoy the work and enjoy working together. I also enjoy the work but don't want to be working all the time.
Why not a grate on top?
I'm not sure why they had lids. Possibly because a grate can fall into its own basin (unless it's round of course).
why is brick used - there must be a reason?
I imagine bring is what was available to construct those basins. They are from the late '80s.
Question for you: just bought a house. The plot slopes down as you go from the front of the house to the backyard. Once you're in the backyard it continues to slope a little bit, evens out, and then there's an uphill slope as my property line meets up with a nature preserve/park. Should I do a catch basin and sump-pump the standing water uphill to the street? There's no really fall for me to divert water off my property and I can't mess with the nature preserve. Would building a retaining wall up against the boundary of the nature preserve's steep hill up help?
It sounds like a sump basin might be a good solution, but is standing water that far from your house worth the expense?
@@GCFD wow you replied so quickly!! Thanks!! It's not a huge yard and I've got a 3 and 4 year old so I really want them to be able to play outside. Every time I've gone into the backyard (haven't moved in yet) it's after a very heavy rain and the ground is soaked or pooling. I'll monitor it after less extreme weather and see if it's generally ok back there. Do you have any videos talking about proper drainage when putting in a paver patio or concrete slab patio?
Yes, You will be adding an impermeable surface with the concrete so a channel drain at the far edge might be useful. You may have to pipe it into a sump basin and pump it if you don't have downhill fall away from the area.
No reinforcement in concrete?
Not needed in our area for non-structural concrete.
Don’t you have concrete risers ?
We used concrete blocks.
Can you link the other parts of your work at this apartment complex?
Got it added!
That pour, why was it not molded into some sort of shape? Budget?
I wanted it to follow the contours of the land so the water had an easy flow onto the concrete from all directions.
That should last a while!
I think so too Mark!
12:41 What does the "licence plate" on this vehicle mean?
That's the Diver Down flag. It signals a scuba diver is nearby. I dive.
@@GCFD Thank you!
What the- who didn't eat their crusts?!
Haha
Is there a way I could reach out to you?
👍
It seems like you and your guys are always eating Pizza.
I know! Pizza is easy, it doesn't require huge complicated orders, and it comes to us! the guys would rather stay on the job and keep working so it works well.
@@GCFD Great representation of food groups Meat, Dairy, Vegetables and Carbohydrates all together in one easily managed Meal. Excellent choice and as you say Delivered. Stay Safe
Great videos man. I love your stuff. At the end you said you had a hard time getting the “money shot” of a torrential rain going into the drain. Then you said this area doesn’t get a whole lot of surface water anyway. Why was that drain so huge for so little surface area?
So what exactly does the straw do?
The straw stabilizes the exposed soil from runoff and raindrop splash. It also protects the seed from granivores and releases nutrients as it decomposes. It holds moisture too. We use 100s of bales.
why such an irregular shape for the concrete slab ?
It basically followed the contours of the land. I didn't want straight edges that water would hit and possibly erode away again.
@@GCFD isnt an edge an edge? do straight edges impede water more than curved if the water is hitting dead on?
@@zenmaster24 I wanted the most natural flow from the grade onto the concrete in this case.
#TeamRonald
haha! #TeamRonald
Stabilizing the eroding ground with broken concrete is not a bad idea but the execution was horrible even excluding clogging the drain.
