I’m a musician, I played guitar in a post-rock band and produced downtempo electronica in the early ‘00s. In 2008 I decided to go back to college and I got a 4-year degree in media studies, then went to tech school for a 2-year degree in electronics engineering. This shit right here is my entire life. Seriously well done.
This is incredible, both from a technical and artistic point of view. I don't know anything about lasers yet, but you sure made me interested about them. Also, would it be possible to upload the music part of this video somewhere? This is extremely relaxing and beautiful. Thanks for your work Benn.
Now if only you would have set this up to play the bubbles in your chocolate milk. See Mom, it serves a purpose, it's fun, and it's chocolatey good. Cool stuff Ben. Tanks for sharing!
I keep coming back for the ink part as this still blowing my mind how "easily" sound can be altered by light (if it travels by light that is but still!)
This man.... This is... I can't even... I've been studying and learning about synthesis, and modular, for a while now. I've just met what is effectively the man who taught the smartest teacher I've known. This man is an unabashed genius. And he uses it to make music with laser pointers. :P Incredible
lol i love that Benn spent a 9-minute video on what would and has taken academic experimental musicians a semester or longer to pull-off... says a lot about autodidacticism 🤘
Can you tell me a bit more about what the CV is controlling? I showed this to my physics students and they were blown away, but also very curious about what you created and how it was controlled by the light.
looks like aurora borealis : ) Today I heard an interesting program on Norwegian radio about people who claim to be able to hear sounds from the norther lights. That's not possible, but what might be the case, and what scientists now are trying to figure out is if radio waves, magnetic something or whatever is causing grass, twigs, hear in your ear or something else, to vibrate in audio rate. In e few years your invention will be as common as the spring tank. Maybe try this with several lasers in a larger tank or a swimming pool?
Amazing stuff. Going through your content on your series has been really helpful. How about creating a video on some of your acoustic instruments? More specifically, your Ronroco, the strings you use and the tuning you prefer on it. There seems to be a shortage of good Ronroco videos on UA-cam. Cheers!
Do you think it would be possible to pull the balanced audio trick with this, and send two lasers, one with inverted signal, and then sum them, to cancel the interference and get a cleaner signal over distance? This is very rad, and the modular performance using water and ink was gorgeous!
I know this was posted a while ago, but I was wondering.... could this work by dropping glitters into the tank along with the ink - if it sinks of course? It would block the light beam and, you know, might look kind of trippy too. Fine sand might work as well, and always bring you back to clear(ish) water.
Hi my name is Silvana Blomgren how to block those lasers if someone is pointing to my walls and windows? I saw those kinds of laser in my walls and windows?
"Do not ever plug a laser receiver into your modular synthesizer unless you have a good understanding of circuitry and a module that protects the incoming signal." And plugging a laser receiver into the synthesizer is central to the mentioned idea of reducing or eliminating the obnoxious laser glow? It sounds like infrared might be better for sound quality anyway (and avoid the question of making the green laser less visible), but is that 100% invisible? I want to be unobtrusive, but I don't need to be particularly stealthy, and I believe infrared light doesn't naturally refract into visible light just by hitting windows, so I think I'd be aiming IR blind (which might be bad for my eyes at any wattage, and I think I wouldn't even know if I were shining it into my eyes?) or using an IR camera, which seems like an extra layer of complication I'd prefer to avoid.
This is easily the most interesting modulation source ever.
A true piece of contemporary art. Leagues above anything I’ve seen in a Modern Art Museum.

That ending is one of the most beautiful things I've ever witnessed.
Really and truly beautiful and original. Breathtaking moment when the ink started falling and I waited for the sound to respond...
This is what modular synthesizers were made for.
I would love to hear an ambient album of you with tracks like this!
me too!
This is so cool, especially the modulation with the black ink. I think I need to start building a modular synth..down the rabbithole.

Thanks for your work Benn.
This was great. I really like the sound mod with the ink, every sound is unique.
Eye candy Eargasm combo . A first for me, thank you.

This is superb would listen hours on end.

That was beautiful, this is a great channel, I learn new stuff every time I watch a video.
@Benn and Gear You should use a clear, carbonated liquid and see what effect the bubbles have on the modulation.
Ok, this is pretty awesome - made me think of Arrival...

Very interesting! Especially with the ink modulation.
I'm so glad I am subscribed to your channel. Great stuff.

So cool! Thank you for the inspiration!
W O W!!! Mind Blowing......Thank!
This is epic. Kubrick would be proud...Was not expecting this when I casually clicked on your video. Well done.
Also, you should share a schematic..

Seconded, belatedly.
Thanks Benn that is amazing and beautiful!!
6:33 such a cool visual

Do double pane windows effectively kill voice frequencies?
Add this to some 800+ mhz on special radios and you could divide and destroy a whole town

that was amazing
Do have any recorded music up anywhere?
Jesus christ that is amazing
inspiring stuff!
I would like to try myself this. Do you have any schematic for the transmiter?
What solar panel did you use if you dont mind me asking?
amazing
fantastic!
How would you capture if someone is doing this to you? I know of the physical effects.
fucking hell. brilliant
Nice! Thank you!)

I guess I'll look like a weirdo regardless of how I do it. I'm not sure if visible lasers or a lack thereof will make much of a difference.
thank's Benn :D its amazing :)
1:11 is that a near direct laser hit to your eye? Ö
aaaa HOW did i not know about this channel until now
like, seeing as Benn is one of my favorite musicians/artists of all time if not my definite favorite
Neat!
That's fucking crazy
This is so fucking cool. what
good
Wow.
How the fuck can you be so smart to do something like this? It's beyond me.
BROOOOOOOOOOOO
