    Your videos are helping so very much!
    Might I suggest - perhaps a wearable, remote mic? Might I also suggest...the asst professor's channel I watched for Anatomy and Physiology (and who was a tremendous help to me earn high 90s in both I and II) is "Wendy Riggs". Technically speaking, her set up might be a benefit to your videos. I think you could slip into that style easily and that might improve your audio while making your visuals even easier to read. She is also very interested in working with other professors to learn her techniques. It might be worth a glance.
    Again - thank you so much for your videos. They are of great help.
    (A little bit of my back story- my original degrees are in education. Worked in the field for over 20 years. Now I am looking to switch careers and help folks through a different arena - nursing. This semester [last one pre-OFFICIAL, nursing classes]: microbiology, chemistry, abnormal-psychology.)

    Don't forget FFI (Fatal familial insomnia). It's only in 30-40 families in the world, but is caused by prions and is always fatal.

    Just leaving a feedback here: You are doing an amazing job over here, i am a molecular biologist, taking a MSc and you LITERALLY saved my life prior to my exam. You have developed an amazing ability to transmit very specialized information in very clear and easy-to-follow patters which reflects both your deep knowledge on the topic and the very hard work you have put into processing and delivering it successfully to the audience. Really inspiring work, keep doing this, you are truly amazing. Thank you once again! Cheers from Norway!

    Beef itself does rarely contain the preons; it is infected brain tissue that causes BSE or VCJD. Products containing brain tissue and such was used in the food served at many schools around England and therefore people are fearing a wide spread disease of VCJD among the young.

    How does the infected beef get the prions in the brain?

    • @BiologyProfessor
      @BiologyProfessor  4 роки тому

      “prions likely reach the brain through another route - by traveling along nerves - similar to the way herpesviruses and the rabies virus can invade the brain.” From www.google.com/amp/s/www.livescience.com/amp/64196-how-prions-spread-to-brain.html

    Great content. Is there any consensus regarding how prions pass through cell membranes?
    The impression I get from Cell Bio texts is that any proteins larger than an amino acid are not transported into cells but interact with cells through receptor mediated endocytosis.

    • @BiologyProfessor
      @BiologyProfessor  5 років тому +1

      The PrP protein is expressed extracellularly (on the cell surface). So it does not have to cross the cell membrane. See more detailed information here: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4423772/

    I wonder if you could comment on how resistant prions are to heat by normal cooking in contaminated meat. Very scary stuff.

    • @drvir
      @drvir 6 років тому

      Not sure, but perhaps as much as to degenerate the protein into polypeptides or change its structure, even slightly... But performing this process inside the human body might cause other complications. It might straightaway degenerate other useful proteins of the brain, which would be as fatal as long term prion infection...

    • @gerardjones7881

      If cooking destroyed protein it wouldn't make sense to eat steak.
      There would be no useable protein.

    So they catalyze normal proteins, yet you specifically write "prion proteins" up above?

    • @BiologyProfessor
      @BiologyProfessor  4 роки тому

      Normally folded PrP proteins are functional and healthy proteins in the brain. It is when they become misfolded by another misfolded one (the prion) that they become dangerous prions themselves. When I said “normal proteins”, I meant normally folded PrP proteins. Prions only catalyze the misfolding of other PrP proteins, not just any protein. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRNP

    • @yzavasquez
      @yzavasquez 4 роки тому

      No, you just cannot destroy them easily. People should stop eating animal-based products.

    • @BiologyProfessor
      @BiologyProfessor  4 роки тому

      Nope. “Prions cannot be destroyed by boiling, alcohol, acid, standard autoclaving methods, or radiation. In fact, infected brains that have been sitting in formaldehyde for decades can still transmit spongiform disease. Cooking your burger 'til it's well done won't destroy the prions!” From learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/basics/prions/ (I love this website)
