ATC250ES front fork swap upgrade to 350X explained.

  • In this video I explain the reason why I swapped to a 350x front fork. I explain how I used an ATC250sx front axle tube and a brake flange bracket cut from an 82 200E front axle tube. We positioned it on the bike to measure fit and clearances. Then we welded the flange on to use as a mount for the 350x 0EM brake disc. I was able to maintain the disc brake set up and put on a modern rim with a 4/110 bolt pattern. I think it looks great and rides great too! Enjoy!

      That story is a familiar one. I bought this one for $100 it hadn't run in many years and was sitting under a shack for lack of a better description. Everything was broken, the tank was missing, the rear fenders had chipped away to the point that very little was left. The rear brake was locked up, all tires were flat and rotten. Last but not least -the top end of the engine was locked up due to someone leaving the air box lid off and rain filling the box and rusting the piston in place.

    Instead of adding an extra left hand master cylinder. Maybe you could adapt a distribution block like they use on Polaris ATV's and run the single master cylinder you already have. You will not be able to actuate your brakes independent of each other but it might simplify the installation.

    Consider: instead of a digital speedo, use an old phone so you can run navigation and speed simultaneously. Mount cheap android in a waterproof case. It runs on GPS so there's no need to activate the device. Plus, it's a Bluetooth media player. :)

      Austin l - join Honda Hoarders on Facebook or go join ThreeWheelerWorld.com. Honda Hoarders on FB is a closed group with thousands of people on it. They will be able answer the question. These older trikes have really small hubs and bearings. I would be careful how heavy a rim you choose. Good luck.

    Is this possible to do with a 200 es. I’m tired of crappy front end forks /shocks. I really did mine and they’re still horse sh*t. And I feel the rear hubs are too.

    Is the triple original 250es? Would the 250es shaft work if I used stock brakes and just wanted a lift?

  • @stillshreddin

    I'm doing a 350x front end swap on my 85 250es. Where did you find a rotor flange to weld to the sx hub? I'm debating whether to use the 350x front hub and wheel with a 25x8x11 tires or to convert to a 250sx hub like you did. It would be nice to have a sx 4x110 front hub but the rotor flange is my hang up. Do you run 5x2 offset wheels also?

    • @interglactc
      @interglactc  2 роки тому

      It’s been a number of years but I’m pretty certain I had an ATC200S front axle tube and we ground off the welds on that one and it was pretty darn close- the correct size. We pre-assembled and spaced the flange and the 350X disc. We had to position it and measure carefully to get the spacing right. If you don’t get it on there square with the caliper it will wobble and the disc and pads will get worn out really quickly. Possibly even damage the caliper. Btw you must drill new holes to mount the disc. So take your time. It’s been working great for years now. I purchased a rear disc set up a couple years ago on Honda Hoarders (Facebook) from Brad. It works well enough when used in conjunction with the front brakes. The rear disc really needs a larger master. Hope this helps! If you haven’t joined HH on Facebook you should.

    • @stillshreddin
      @stillshreddin 2 роки тому

      @@interglactc thanks for the reply. I plan to do the brad rye kit in the rear, I just sourced all the trx450r brake components. HH is where I found out about his kit. My main goal is to make my 250es handle/stop better and more reliably. Thinking of running a 300ex rear shock to complement the 350x forks. Did you use the 250sx front axle or 350x? And are your wheels 5x2 offset? That seems to be what everyone uses when they go to a 12" wheel. Thanks again

    • @interglactc
      @interglactc  2 роки тому +1

      The wheels are 14” they aren’t 5x2. They each have 2” wheel spacers front and back. The front axle tube is 250SX. The 350X looks just like the 250R which is cast aluminum I think. I think I used the 350X axle since it is still the correct width for those forks. They all use the same axle bearings. The SX axle tube was perfect length. I didn’t weld or bolt on the fork stops. So that’s one thing I haven’t bothered to do. I have a plastic Clark tank. If I had a metal tank I’d probably be worried about the bars touching the tank. The ATC250ES shaft spacer must be cut down btw. If you look at my other videos I use a lift bracket which is very common and very inexpensive. I wanted to keep the adjustability. This also enabled me to put the OE shock on its lowest setting for a nicer ride. I have ridden the hell out of this bike for years with this stuff on it and never had any issues. But she’s about ready for a top end. I use this bike to cut grass all summer here in TX. lol btw you’ll end up using the 350X handle bars. The BR’s bars won’t work safely. 😉

    • @interglactc

      There are multiple reasons why you can’t reuse the front axle tube from the original forks. The main one is that the original ES front axle tube and drum are too long to fit between the 350X forks.

      Hey Joel, glad you got one! So it's been more than 2 years I'd say since I got those hand guards. I gave a quick look and saw many different types that could be used. I liked this style because they were kinda old school looking but probably anything you'd find for a modern Honda utility with 7/8 bars will work. The factory boots for a stock front end (32mm) are found on eBay easy as pie for $25-30. I want to say I've bought them on Summit's website too.

    • @Buzzieee94

      yeah thats exactly why i liked them there not to flashy and they would probably survive anything i've been looking around but cant find them anywhere, i've found the boots now! i'm afraid my left fork seal might have gone though haha! thanks for the quick reply man so useful having these videos up while i am working away on it no one in Scotland really has any of these or they're few and far between so these vids are a life saver!

    • @interglactc
      @interglactc  8 років тому

      +Joel Lawrie - eBay is probably the greatest resource for us on these bikes. I will usually check three standard places. First I look on eBay, then Partzilla, and then Amazon. Of course when searching always search for "ATC250ES" not BigRed. Although you will find that some people will incorrectly list their parts using things like "80's Big Red trike" of course when they do that you can often get some really good deals because no one is searching for that verbiage. The fork seals I like to use are the "Leak Proof" brand. They work well. I use a mixture of 40% ATF and 60% Lucas oil treatment. This mixture works well and it's pretty thick so it doesn't leak very easily.

    What is the bolt pattern and offset for the front wheel? I'm doing the same swap with a 200x front setup on my BR.

    • @interglactc
      @interglactc  7 років тому +1

      Tyler Ball - I used 350x forks. They are very different from 200x. 200x is shorter, and smaller diameter as well as the brake caliper is on the wrong side. I used a 250sx front axle tube and had a friend weld a disc to the axle as a mounting plate for the disc. The 250es /250sx has a wheel bolt pattern of 4/110. I used a two inch wheel spacer.

      Intergalactic just searched disc brakes on 250es on you tube thats the name of video i would send link but computer here at work sucks. so how did you put the key pad on?

    • @interglactc
      @interglactc  7 років тому

      Tim Burrier - oh I'm sorry man! I meant to reply on that. So my handle bars had a connecting bar that went from one side of the handle bars to the other. I think it was a mount for a water bottle or something like that. Anyway it's hard to describe these but they are sorta like clamps and since they held this cross bar in place they were naturally a 7/8 diameter just like the bars. So I removed the cross bar and slid these clamps down into the center at the lowest point of the handle bars so that they'd line up with the holes in the dash/key pad. I just used some long machine screws and put nylon /locking nuts on the back so they won't vibrate off. I didn't torque them down tight. I wanted some play in the dash so I could lift or slightly spin it up to prevent breakage.

  • @timothyburrier6684
    @timothyburrier6684 7 років тому

    So I am just a little confused. I have been researching this fork swap and ended up just getting lost with this fork swap I believe you said the 350 forks and triple tree bolt right on ? whats the part number or link for bearings. and would you know if 200x forks will work the same, just bolt on? The 200x forks seem to be more ready avalible and cheaper. And how about the rear disc you get any where with that yet? thanks for your time

    • @interglactc
      @interglactc  7 років тому +2

      Tim Burrier - the 200x forks can be done but they are smaller and the brake is on the opposite side. www.ebay.com/itm/172326654003
      It's just not nearly as nice 200x forks are 32mm diameter tubes. The forks are longer making them easier to bend than the short ones that the 250es comes with. The 350x is 36mm I believe. So they are much more substantial and harder to bend.
