It probably helps that they're not food-sized and that they can read reptile body language. It would probably not be safe to have a toddler/cat/small dog in the same house as an alligator, even one whose growth is stunted to adolescent size like Rex!
Rex being so clever that she immediately figured out the ramp, and then promptly falling off the back of it is the most on-brand thing I’ve seen her do.

Their video "spying" on Rex is so cute, I definitely recommend it if you haven't seen it yet, but something they said almost made me cry - alligators have a fancy transparent membrane in their eye they close so they can protect their eyes underwater but still see. When they first gave Rex access to a pool, she didn't know how to use the membrane, because she had never been in water before. She would just close her normal eyelids and barrel around the bottom of the water, knocking into things because she couldn't see. She has learned how to use the membrane since, but it just made me sad to imagine a creature so deprived of the things that should be second nature to her.
I love this, because it shows that Alligators aren't evil killing machines. She lets you touch her, clean her, and change up her room without trying to hurt you. The only time she even got aggressive was when the door touched her tail suddenly (which, instinctively, she took as an attempt to eat her), and she aborted the move when she realized it was an accident. How cool is that??
@@Beeteljuice37imo, that's a lot like a cat. Don't get me wrong, lot worse consequences you mess up with the alligator. But it seems like both he expected her movement, and she wasn't TRYING to hurt Ed. They've got crazy reflexes, and she disapproved lol.

As someone just discovering Snake Discovery, I am intrigued to know more about Rex's back story. So grateful that she is now with Ed and Emily as she is definitely living the best she can with whatever she has been through.
There's a Rex playlist and recent Rex birthday vid if you've not seen. The tl;dr is she was brought as a hatchling to the former owner's house in I think the 80s. He loved Rex, but didn't know how to take care of her. Emily got a job helping with his other pets and just omg there's an alligator and she's how old and she's fed how much? (But much more tactfully put I think). Emily tried to get her into a bigger space and eventually dude just asked if they wanted her. Right after they got married and bought a house. Imagine discussing adopting a pint sized alligator with your spouse right after you got married.
Have you checked with some zoo's were they get their glass for enclosures? They put hippo's and polar bears behind glass (might be acrylic) so there must be something for an aligator.
Moms: "look at your hands they're so cute" to their kids People overhearing Emily talking to Rex: "look at those little hands they're so cute!" People: "oh Emily has a kid" Emily: scrubbing Rex's hands People: "oh nevermind I forgot I was talking about Emily"

@Jacqueline Haley im pretty sure it's blood from her food since they feed her raw meat
@Jacqueline Haley just finished the video lol i am now sure that it's from food
I love reptiles
Normal pet owners: '' let's go bathe our dog''
snake Discovery: '' let's go Bathe alligator''
This is stolen. Just wanna state that.
@@keoni3052 what was stolen?
I’m pretty share the comment you did
Bleeeeeh sorry I can’t spell / talk today

1 half of my brain: You can't pet Rex, she's an alligator.
The other half of my brain: He Ho scaly pupper.
Ikr ur like 1 half of ur brain is like " scary alligator dont touch " but the other side of ur brain is like " so cute love her I want to pet her "
@@gregwallen9383 as a floridian there is no half of brain scared of rex
Brooke Dumboski “truest” is not a word
@@RemyVRgt This is the internet, perfect grammar isn't required so long as you can understand what they're trying to get across.
@@RemyVRgt also it is a real word
Emily: don't go behind there
Rex: ooo this looks like a nice spot - flop-
i died at that
And there goes the gator
Rex grew so much since the what it’s like to have a pet alligator video. I just watched them back to back and it’s a big difference!
Have you checked with some zoo's were they get their glass for enclosures? They put hippo's and polar bears behind glass (might be acrylic) so there must be something for an aligator.
TBH seeing Rex face-planting behing her pool is the funniest thing I've seen in a while 😅
what has covid done to us😅
Emily: she'll realize its no fun to go under the ramp
Rex: yeah right mom
I love the noise when they were scrubbing down Rex🥰😍
You should reach out to the RAD Zoo or NERD to see who did the glass for some of their big enclosures
ya!!!! like so emily and ed can see it!!!!!
I love the sign on Rex's door!
Shenanigator:
n. an alligator that instigates shenanigans
Moms: "look at your hands they're so cute" to their kids
People overhearing Emily talking to Rex: "look at those little hands they're so cute!"
People: "oh Emily has a kid"
Emily: scrubbing Rex's hands
People: "oh nevermind I forgot I was talking about Emily"
That’s how I am with my chickens!
@@tessabunge7621 same with my bearded dragon 😂
@@ellie_lewis09 that's how I am with my gecko to 😂
A kid that is older than her...!
"I think she will be here for another two months."
5 months later: still at their house.
6 months
She won't break this pool.
Rex: "hold my pool toys."
Hahah I'm daed boy🤣😂
Omg yessss
Wow Princess Celestia how did you get here.
“Because she may break it” Pfft what no, Rex? She could never...
Why was Rex going up the stairs the most adorable thing?? 🤣🤣
Why wouldn't it be?
Fu
Fu...fully..funny
Don't know 😍😊
i started crying when rex got mad that the door touched her
“Woah... Ed knows how to sweep!”
“Duly noted.”
Rex is 34 years old!? I know her stunted size definitely throws off the age guess, but I wouldve never thought she was THAT old!!! I thought she was in her 20s!!
I know right!?! She’s a little over double my age! Crazy!
He growth was stunned from a past abusive home
@@astroedits4874 They know that :)
She spent around 25 or more years in,a 4 ft box, pour baby. She deserves to be spoiled in her golden years
@@astroedits4874 now they weren’t abusive Emily says that but they just didn’t research alligators and weren’t responsible enough to keep one, pretty much in conclusion “alligators are not good pets” 🙂
So Rex is basically Ed and Emily's baby.
Side note: "she's smart enough to figure the ramp out" -Ed
*Rex gets head lodged under ramp, then falls under ramp*
21:10
Rex: "You wanna know how I got these scars?"(Joker's voice)
Emily: We know you aren't that vicious Rex
Ed: yeah no you can't really do anything
xD I feel bad for Rex she just trynna show you how crazy she can be
*“Dont fall down there”*
Rex: So anyways, I started falling-
I’m sorry mom I fell and u told me not to
Me to

Nah 😑
More emojis
They should make an “Alligator Bath ASMR” video 😂 the sounds of her scales being scrubbed is so satisfying!
"She will never be able to break this pool"
Rex: "Challenge accepted!"
That’s what I was thinking
Just think, 2 years later they both have MASSIVE enclosures at the zoo😂 The amount of progress you two make is amazing X
6:29 Rex is like "FINE, I'll go upstairs. But I'm going to complaint about it the whole time"
Ed: *Realizes*
Ed: your camera is submersible 😏
Camera: *moving down slowly*
Emily: Nooo-
Camera: *water noises*
Chloe: 🧐🤔
*"don't fall down there"*
rex: **falls**
Yeah it was so funny
Rex: hmmmm, no I don't think I'll participate in being un-clumsy
Loved the 'Rex' POV Ed provided, if you could attach a go pro to her head so ew could see he world from her perspective that would be cool
You* her* :)
Well, wish granted. They did just that for her birthday this year
Rex really lucked out finding her home with you both..I'm so glad she is so loved and taken amazing care of after so many years of not great care..she deserves you two❣️❣️
"She is smart enough to figure out a ramp"
*Head gets stuck between ramp and pool*
