I had an orange SS hatchback just like that, 4.2 V8 with flares and spoilers. they came in some funky colours, that colour was called "lone o'ranger". I had an awesome music system fitted and really enjoyed the car for the 2 years I owned it, it was only 7 tears old when I sold it for $3300 with 130km, tailgate was rusty and the interior was kind of shabby but it was reliable. Driving it in summer was like sitting in an oven even with the aircond turned up full, that ad spruiking the amazing "air flow" is false advertising. In winter it was like sitting in the fridge, the heater was barely adequate for anyhing. Small fuel tank that needed to be filled every 300km, none of the modern luxuries we take for granted now, not even intermittent wipers. No safety features or crash protection at all back then, if you hit anything at all you most likely died. I tried folding down the seats and getting in the back for a nap but it was so uncomfortable I gave up after half an hour, there is just not enough room to put a mattress in the back for anyone bigger than a child. These cars were very underpowered gas guzzlers with the anti-pollution gear, having extractors fitted made a big difference but what we considered fast half a century ago is a bit of a joke now, most 4 cylinder 21st century cars would leave the V8s in the dust. But still it was the perfect car for a 20 year old back then, I have never seen one with the hutch, I wonder how many of those were sold.
I used to pre deliver and fix these back then. Used to occasionally run the 308 ci SS hard on the water brake chassis dyno. Good memories of an old era. Thanks for the old footage.
great ape. Always warranty issues to deal with. You may find the same with every model of many brands. This is due to mass production. For the price versus overseas import prices they were a great buy for the money back then.
The colour is "Papaya" (and the car featured is a 3300 6 Cylinder. (I have a 5L SS the same colour - said to be one of only 521 made). ARDC had me bring mine to the Muscle Car Masters a few years ago; I have a photo of me and the guy in the ad standing next to it. Sadly, the lady in the ad had died a few years previously.
yes, definitely one of the great looking cars of its time , but I also had a big preference for the 4.2ltr V8 LH version as well, it was a good sized engine with the convenience of 4 doors for passengers. Not the best on fuel economy but .
Ah the good old days.my first car was an Ss hatch in mint julip, jessus I hated that colour. I took a bank loan out and went a hunting. Passed on so many, but one I remember was a yellow 308 m21 hot wires flares and I swear ten people were there looking in this guys driveway. I gave it a miss because it had dropped a lobe of the cam so I moved on to eventually buy mine. After ten years I thought It was now or never because the old rust was getting in, so got hold of two mint doors from a uc sle and a hatch door from the same car. New flare kit from MacArthur fiberglass who supplied Patterson Cheney new 15 x 9 and 15 x 10 hot wires and a full respray in a jb camera colour called electron blue in 2 PAC. With the the full flare kit and black door frames and bonnet that car looked awesome from any angle and I still have many posters and detailed photos from the time. Hope it went to a good home when I traded on a 308 Vk Calais wich is still in the family and well loved. Rego on the Torana was IPP 520 if you have her kiss her for me
Lol, good stuff that, love the old Torana's. Is the girl Olivia Newton John? Had to laugh at the smirk on the kents face with she asks if his ready for bed, which appears to be 4 O'Clock in the afternoon after they make the "Hatch Hutch"
bencol01 I think the girl is actress Judy McBurney who appeared in the late 70's soap opera "The Young Doctors" and later in "Prisoner". The actor is Gil Tucker who I remember from the police drama "Cop Shop".

You're welcome Pat.
Super100MPH.
My father in the 1950s used to compete in racing trials against Harry Firth. Harry turned these Hatchback 308s into Bathust winners.

In north America these were (or close to) the Chevy Vega and Pontiac Astre. Except with a Nova front. A bit of love and the V8 went like stink!

Best car ever made I love the split folding seats
They were cool cars! What a great idea the "hatchback hutch" was!
Crikey, the good old days when every average sheila looked like Elle McPherson and not a Russian weight-lifter like today's beefa-saurases.

Looks like a Chevy Vega
7:52 . Going to bed during the day eh? ;)
Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
Wonder if Gil Tucker got to ……….?
I'll put my order in for the 5.0 ss 4 speed thanks
Used to drive these of the trains at cooks river in Sydney they were an awesome looking car then and they have lost none of their appeal
Classic!
You mean Gil Tucker? Classic alright!
For out and solid man.
Judy McBurney and Gil Tucker in the car.

Just think what it's worth now 😁
Was the best design ever you can camp in it if only they bring back the Torana hatch with split fold seats

Me likey, thanks :) Got any more ? I wanna hatchback hutch tooooo :'(
You can beat an SS hatchback but you can’t beat an A9X🖕😁
