Pokemon Snap is notoriously hard to emulate because of the hacky way the camera works on the N64. It may not have been your rom that is broken, but the emulator or render plugin that you were using. In Pokémon snap, the renderer will affect a lot of things you wouldn’t expect it to affect, like point totals awarded for pictures. I’m not an expert on it & just spitballing but I think the renderer might have been artificially inflating some of the point totals and the reason you didn’t get the pokeflute is because you didn’t *actually* have a score as high as it said.
Omg I never knew Koffing did something special with the pokeflute 😱 It is such an awesome feeling to learn something new about a game you played as a child and rediscover as an adult

There's an N64 Pokémon Snap challenge I tried back in the day, but failed at. I came so close though that I have to think surely it's possible: While only playing on the Beach course, unlock Apples. That's it. I remember only being something like 80 points from managing it, but for the life of me I couldn't get those last few points. It's so close though that surely it's possible, right?
@@pressaTD If it turns out to be too easy, then the question can instead or additionally be "How many points can you get from the Beach stage alone?" I'd call the challenge 'Life's a Beach!' I really don't think it is easy tho, again going by memory I was trying to squeeze the last few points out of Butterfree and Pidgey and couldn't quite find those last few.
I appreciate your attempts to look for glitches in order to bring the number lower. If you find any I would love to see an updated video showing how far glitches can take the minimum photo requirement.
Loved the video. Good job! I know this is a late comment and ultimately doesn't effect the outcome of the video (i think) but i just wanted to say (even though I've seen somebody else mention something along a similar vein), it's most likely not the ROM that is broken but the emulator. AFAIK, even the emulation on the Wii can have issues with this Pokemon snap because of how it was programmed to work with high accuracy. For anyone that does decide to play this game on emulator, you need to make sure that you have a graphics plugin (I think this is what handles it anyway) that will allow you to set the accuracy to "Accurate" and enable the "copy framebuffer to RDRAM" or "Copy color buffer to RDRAM" and that should not only fix the issue with the pokemon names and red dot not appearing when aligned on a pokemon, it should also make professor oak's scores a fair bit more accurate.
I found this channel because of Pikmin, but I'm not gonna say no to other games, especially some nice nostalgia ones from the N64. This vid dredged up a little bit of anxiety watching some of the apple and pester ball throws that got stamped into my brain from trying to maximize photo points. It also reminded me of how confusing it was that some of the best photos I took were complete garbage from a technical photography standpoint (rapidashes blending together into one mass of obscured polygons, charizard being nothing but amorphous flame, etc.) but are golden from a technical computer analysis standpoint.
the rom wasn't the issue, the emulator is. for some reason some emulators just don't like Pokémon snap (I remember project64 having the exact same issues you are describing.)
Another thing that happends on Emulators is that not only it won't recognize the Signs. but Pokemons that require taking photos of other Pokemon like Dugtrio and Starmie won't show up because the game doesn't recognize that you've taken a photo, same with the Lapras, it won't get closer no matter how many photos you take of it
Hey whatever music you have playing in the background, don't know if it's game audio or what, but it's EXTREMELY quiet. If you want it in I'd boost up that track in comparison to your voice and listen to it back in a different device to compare the audio balance.

You should try the Wii Virtual Console version via Dolphin. Works perfectly. I still find it strange that we can run a Wii emulator running an N64 emulator inside of it, and this game works flawlessly. Yet we can't seem to emulate an N64 directly without issues (this game being one of the biggest examples). What did Ninty do in their VC emulation that the community haven't been able to figure out in almost 25 years to get this game to work?

I've wasted too many hours trying to find out the mystery of the Mew event n possible new stages or pokemon to find, in the end I was just expecting too much from a photo simulator
I can't recall anything specific, but I'm pretty sure there were schoolyard rumors about hidden Pokemon in the game. After all, if Mew was under the truck and there are multiple, multi-sequence evolution events in this game, surely there are secrets here, too!

Anything mandatory shouldn't be viewed as annoying or unfortunate in a minimum or low% run, imo. Because all runners of said challenge would need to do it, so it's no different than sitting thru logos and pressing start at the main menu. Imo.
There is a way to actually fix the problems you had while playing this. You can get all 6 signs to unlock the final stage and also get a few other pokemon like Pikachu riding Electrode, Dugtrio and Muk. Though the fix will mess with the games graphics a little. Essentially the problem is the little red dot the camera should doesn't show up and that's why the problems you mentioned happen.
Yeah I noticed that right away but I could still at least submit photos of Pokémon to Oak so I didn’t anticipate all the problems I’d have in the end lol

My theory is that you can't unlock the Pokéflute until after you've unlocked the Dash Engine. You unlock the Dash Engine after finding the secret route in Valley, but after that, in this challenge, you never gain any more points, so the game never checks to see if it should give you the Pokéflute. You could try taking one more point scoring picture after getting the Dash Engine, and see if that gives you the Pokéflute.
If that is the reason, it means the minimum number of photos required is one higher, since you'd need an extra photo after the Dash Engine to trigger getting the Pokéflute.
I tested this challenge on the switch version first and had unlocked the Poke Flute once I reached 130,000 points. The emulation of snap is historically known to be really bad (was news to me tho lol), so I’m confident the answer is 49 photos.

If done right its possible to get buy with only a single photo of most ookemon in the game, except for a few rare cases such as lapras, and starmie, and i think a couple others, that sctually require multiple pictures to be taken in order to get a high score, example staryu must be ohtoed to get starmie, to get the highest score there are 3 staryu i the canyon if done just right you can catch all 3 starmie in s single image, bit its a bit if s challenge to do so one one shot. Lapras for example moves closer as eell as adding an extra lapras to the picture for a maximum if 3. I have a lot if practice with this style if gameplay as i always used the minimalist aproach to the game. Even as a kid, my goal was to take the highest ranking photos i can each run and orgressively try to get higher scores. Which incidentslly woukd increase my difficulty every time i visit an area by increasing the standard i set fir myself.
You should also note taking other pics of Pidgey is a good idea because you can get a shot later if you do it right of two pidgeys using gust on a Meowth, it's actually worth a pretty good point total.
Anyway point being in addition to new I count finishing the game as completing the photodex, so if done right you can complete the game with only 64 photos in total. + The 3 it forces you to take every time you go to the beach. As you will need to return at least once to get slsnorlax, Scyther m, and jingler rock. So for a bare minimum of 70 if planned out right. But if you want great scores your gonna need to make sure you maximize the efforts in order to get the best possible pics. Cause like I said high scoring certain pokemon requires multiples be taken.
Well actually for me it was 64, 1 for each pokemon in the game. Plus 2 extra pictures of Staryu, 2 extra pics of Lapras, plus 6 extra of Pidgey, plusone of all the signs in order to get mew, so an extra 6 so let's see 64+2+2+6+6 so 80 in total, if I have a really good run and can get the perfect pictures on the first shot.
By the way to get mew you have to hit him 3 times, then he will float by with a bubble in front of him, you hit it again and the bubble pops it spins and then looks right at you. And THAT is the highest point photo in game. Youre welcome.

That’s only if you don’t take photos of 6 different Pokémon the first time you go through the Beach stage. Otherwise any other time you revisit the Beach stage you’re not forced into taking the photos of Pidgey. Sorry for any confusion about that
@@emmastarr5242Of the 3 major N64 roms, they do have compatability issues with different games for some reason. I recall this issue where Bizhawk would have some problems that Project64 wouldn't. From what I can tell Project64 is the most stable, but it seems to depend on the game.

I actually tried this challenge on the switch version first lol, just thought it would be easier to record on an emulator. But if I do any other snap challenges it will likely be on the switch version knowing what I know now
Not sure if this video is legit. I'm going to investigate further. It seems there are some graphical discrepancies and some frame issues that aren't lining up with how the base game runs. Will post later to confirm my findings and if I have to report him to the proper digital entertainment authorities (tm).

That’s only if you don’t take photos of 6 different Pokémon the first time you go through the Beach stage. Otherwise any other time you revisit the Beach stage you’re not forced into taking the photos of Pidgey. Sorry for any confusion about that

@@emmastarr5242Of the 3 major N64 roms, they do have compatability issues with different games for some reason. I recall this issue where Bizhawk would have some problems that Project64 wouldn't. From what I can tell Project64 is the most stable, but it seems to depend on the game.

The Switch Online version of Pokémon Snap works perfectly, FWIW. If you want to do any more Snap challenges.
I actually tried this challenge on the switch version first lol, just thought it would be easier to record on an emulator. But if I do any other snap challenges it will likely be on the switch version knowing what I know now
Why not just play on the Switch? All these problems from trying to emulate a 25 year old game
Not sure if this video is legit. I'm going to investigate further. It seems there are some graphical discrepancies and some frame issues that aren't lining up with how the base game runs. Will post later to confirm my findings and if I have to report him to the proper digital entertainment authorities (tm).
