$0.70 Beef Haleem in Karachi 🇵🇰

- I was wandering the streets of Karachi, looking for some authentic Pakistani cuisine, when a local man I met recommended that I try Haleem. He told me it's one of the most famous foods in the city.
Haleem is like a thick lentil soup with shreds of meat. It's cooked in huge pots and has to continuously stirred for hours while it's cooking.
The local man, Mr Nabeel, told me he had eaten at Jahanzaib Haleem many times and their Haleem was delicious. Since we were standing almost right in front of the restaurant and I was hungry, it was an obvious decision to make that the place I have my first meal in Pakistan.
As I walked into their shop I looked at the menu board on the wall. The menu was written in English instead of Urdu which was surprising but most helpful. It seems English is used a lot in Pakistan, especially on signs. Some shops have their nameboard displayed in only English, others in only Urdu and other have both.
It was a small menu with only two different meals available, Haleem and Biryani. If a restaurant specialises and sells just one or two items like this then those items must be exceptionally good.
There were two types of haleem available. Beef and chicken. I took the restaurant staff's recommendation to go for beef, taking the smallest portion of 250 grams so that I'd hopefully have room to try the chicken one after it.
Each plate is weighed to make sure you get the portion size that you paid for. My 250 gram plate of Beef Haleem, which was actually a pretty decent portion, was just 120 Pakistani rupees ($0.68 USD). Really incredible value for money.
My reaction to my first spoonful of Beef Haleem was "WOW!", the level of flavour was intense. I wasn't expecting it to have so much spice in it. The best way I could describe it is if you've ever eaten a really thick bowl of dal that's made with a lot of masala, it's like that, but with shreds of tender beef mixed through it.
I cleared the plate quickly and then ordered the chicken version. It was also very tasty but the beef one was the winner in my opinion, especially with the added lemon and crispy fried onions added to it.
I'd worked up a bit of a thirst eating the Haleems (plural) and walked down the street to where I'd seen a sugar cane juice stall earlier. I was drinking the fresh sugar cane juice regularly throughout my adventures in India so I was pleased to see that it's easily available in Pakistan too.
One large glass of fresh juice, about 500 ml, cost only 30 PKR ($0.17 USD). Again, absolutely incredible value for money.
There were a bunch of small stalls around the area so after the sugar cane I visited one selling coconut, which I learned from the local guys is called "copra". A slice of copra was just 20 PLK ($0.11 USD).

I am a doctor and I know some foreigners can be seriously sick to eat that beef Haleem or any local food and to spend some times at the hospital! Traveling the world is great but be extra careful about local food wherever you go in developing countries!

Hi Dale, the sugarcane juice you had in Pakistan is grown locally in fields generally in the outskirts of city. It is transported to majorly sugar mills and the remaining are sent to small vendors for juice extraction.

If u find something a bit spicy, try to eat with a naan or roti.
We Pakistanis eat haleem, nihari and kadahi etc with naan. Its like a curry not soup. All the curries and stews are eaten with naan or roti which makes the spice level milder.

Hi Dale. If you're wondering what gives it that smooth gooey texture, there's also wheat/barley grain mashed in together within the lentils. So it's more like a savoury meat porridge than a soup. There's also an arabic version that has less spices and is slightly sweet. Btw, sugar cane is called "ganne" in urdu, and juice is "ras", so sugar cane juice would be ganne ke ras. And it is grown in Pakistan.

@Dale Sugarcane is “Ganna” in local term. Coconut is normally Nariyal and Copra is dry coconut but usually Nariyal is apt to call in general.

Sugar Cane in Urdu is called "Gan na" , for Coconut if it's haven't been cut would be known as Naryal & if cut it's also called khopra, but majority would still say it "Naryal"

The haleem is made of the lentils and beef
They just mix and cook overnight approximately 8 to 10 hour's almost. To get the real taste. It was actually the mughal royal family dish early in the 17th century.
This is really very delicious dish.
And then you drunk sugarcane juice calls (gana rus) in urdu.
Then u had coconut bite calls khopra or naryal in urdu.

Also hope your stomach was okay!! You’re soooo brave!! I didn’t eat from places outdoor at all and didn’t even get to have street food. Had a stomach bug on my second day there 🤦🏻♀️. Took my little one for the first time, luckily she was all fine throughout our trip. Hope you had a good time in Pakistan. I was in a Karachi in December, I think you arrived right after we left and even stayed at the same hotel room as us!! We were on the 5th floor, and had exactly the same view and room as you!
