  • In this video tutorial I show you how to coat a screen for silk screen printing by Cam Earven for Monument Limited.
    While the screen is drying let's talk scoop coaters.
    The edge should be clean and have no chips, show a close up of the good scoop coater.
    yea our coater should look exactly nothing like this (show chip on the old coater) See that chip.
    These kind of chips will create a dense line we we coat that will be hard to expose.
    You can try to use a high grit sand paper to buff the chip out. If that doesn't work the coater should be scrapped.
    If you are getting a light colored line when you coat it is because we have dry emulsion on the edge of the blade.
    Bringing up the second point thoroughly clean your coater after each use. If you find some emulsion has stuck to the edge and normal water won't take it off use some emulsion remover let it soak and hit it with a scrub pad. In our case I just dunk the coater in our dip tank for a few min then scrub and spray.
    Time to coat the screen.
    Start by filling the coater about halfway with emulsion. (show close up of filling coater with emulsion.)
    start coating on the flat side of the screen.
    hold the screen almost vertical like this, and
    place the coater on the mesh an inch or so up from the bottom edge.
    tip it up slowly and the emulsion will start to move toward the mesh when the emulsion just touches the screen.
    apply a firm pressure and pull the edge smoothly up the mesh (Go pro this part.)
    As we approach the top tip the the coater back and let the bead of emulsion fall away from the mesh.
    when the bead is clear.
    pull up another inch and then pull the coater away.
    Spin the screen and repeat.
    When we are done coating I use my finger to scrap the unused emulsion back into the container. All if these chemicals are expensive so save what you can.
    Now we can place the screen in the rack flat side down.
    We let it dry this way so that the bulk of emulsion moves to the flat side of the screen.
    A thicker stencil on the face of the screen will lay more ink onto the substrate.
    Let the emulsion dry in a dust free dark environment.
    Most manufactures recommend 24 hours but in the blistering arizona heat 4 hours is just fine.
    If you're in a colder or humid climate you may want to stick 24 hour dry times.
    Thats a wrap on coating a screen.
    In our next video I will show you how to burn and expose a screen.

    By chance, do you have a list of products that you recommend as far as degreasers, emulsion, screens, and equipment
    We have a few suppliers now, but I’m always interested in the products that I see in the tutorials and videos, I’m always down to try new products out to see if they compete or are far better than the ones I have now

    For smaller screens do you coat both the inside and outside?
    On smaller screens (used for hats, masks, etc.) I’ve only ever coated the outer (flat) side.

    I've seen other videos where they coat both sides, and then go back on the flat side and do one more pass where it seems like they're taking off some that pushed through from the coating on the inside. This is what I've followed in my attempts, but when spray off the emulsion after exposing, I'm running into an issue of my exposed emulsion basically deteriorating from my image. Essentially, the image is starting to come through as I spray it off, but once I get down to the final pieces needed to come off for some of the details, bigger chunks than I want are coming apart.
    I don't know if I have junk emulsion? I'm using ULANO QTX since I saw online it was a good "Beginners Emulsion"... After about 20 failed attempts, I'm beginning to question two things, if the emulsion itself is bad or if the 3rd pass (2nd pass on the flat side of the screen) is what's screwing me up. Any insight? Does water temperature have anything to do with this? I feel like I heard one video say use cold water, but in Los Angeles, my garden hose water does not seem to get that cold in these hot summers. :(
    PS. I purchased that exposure calculator to help me get my expose time correct, and so far, I think my expose time is about right.

  • @travisrenuad6615

    so there are many different sizes for the emulsion coaters. i see you use a coater everytime thats pretty much the width of the screen. is this to make life easier or your prefrence. also does the coater ever damage the screens edges when coating with the metal to screen contact.

    • @ThePrintLife
      @ThePrintLife  3 роки тому

      exactly. I like a coater that is as close the mesh size as possible. This way you use less tape to mask the openings around the edges.

      Haha yup. that coater is shit, we have the same damn problem with it. I use the glass on the exposure unit to get a the sides flush and tighten the screws. the classic coater with the plastic ends is way better.

    Could ya use LED bulbs in the darkroom since they give out no UV light? Does daylight affect emulsions quickly, or would it take some time to affect them. We have a light safe box for storing them as they dry, just wondering more so in the coating part of the job

      Shane that is a great question. I dont have any experience with LED lights. I would assume they produce some uv, but how much is a mystery to me. If you find out be sure to let me know in the comments. If not I will be looking into it.

    • @shaneybow2102
      @shaneybow2102 6 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. Well I have installed two warm white LED (7 watt=60) bulbs into the room so I will for sure give you an update on that. Just seems more preferable than working in that dull yellow light which most do. They are way more energy efficient too which means cheaper electric bills! Your channel is fantastic by the way, love the how to vids, right to the point and well edited! Keep it up man!

    • @jasonenz4238
      @jasonenz4238 6 років тому

      Shane Bowers - the yellow sleeves that go over fluorescent bulbs is plenty of light. They make exposure units now with LED's...I assume they might cause some issues. I have 2 lamps with bug lights that's plenty. I've left my shop lights (4' fluorescent lights) on when working with fresh screens and emulsion and had no issues, but I'd rather be safe then sorry! I read somewhere that overhead shop lights will take at least an hour to have even the littlest effect...but I haven't tested that yet :)

    • @jasonenz4238
      @jasonenz4238 6 років тому

      Shane Bowers - please do keep us informed. Maybe coat a small part of a screen with a small image, out it on foam with a piece of glass over it and let it sit for like 2-3 hours and see what happens :)

    What size screens are you using

  • @Modehfyable
    @Modehfyable 6 років тому

    Yea i need to learn how to expose. Done like 12 different test and only like 2 came out almost 99 percent perfect using a 250w bulb and some cases, the sun. But then again im using diazo green emulsion. Think i might change the type of emulsion i use. Which one do you typically use

    • @Its_Just_Shane
      @Its_Just_Shane 6 років тому +1

      Modehfyable Same here. Built an exposure unit from scratch then spent months exposing screens trying to find the right number of seconds to expose them at. No printing mind you, just exposing reclaiming, coating and exposing again. All in my spare time but still time consuming.

    • @jasonenz4238
      @jasonenz4238 6 років тому +1

      Modehfyable - diazo is way more forgiving. If you expose an extra 30 seconds with diazo style emulsion, you'll be ok, but if you expose an extra 30 seconds with photopolymer, your screen will be over exposed. What issues are you having? Image and emulsion washing out, or emulsion not washing out of the image area?

    • @Modehfyable
      @Modehfyable 6 років тому

      have to wash out image for a while and when it finally shows it gets to a point where it either completely falls apart or i lose a good amount of detail on the image. but now it usually falls apart. ive tried the sun for30sec to 3min, 30sec is usually almost perfect but not sure if its not 100percent perfect because i have a glass over the image during exposure. and as for the 250w bulb, sometimes 12min is fine, sometimes 15min, sometimes 10min. it seems simple to do but yet i cant find the magic number. i might change my emulsion kit to a different brand

    • @ThePrintLife
      @ThePrintLife  6 років тому +2

      Yea man it sounds like you may have a fairly transparent film, combined with the diazo base emulsion you are going to have a hard time because diazo based emulsions take for ever to expose especially with a crappy light source. I would use the sun becouse it has the highest concentration of uv light. Photopolymer emulsions are super uv sensitive and will expose faster then diazo so that may help with your issue. But what I always recommend is just buy Dual Cure emulsion. its the best general use emulsion.

    • @Modehfyable
      @Modehfyable 6 років тому

      The Print Life ill check it out then.. which specific emulsion brand/name do u recommend for the emulsion because this speedball diazo kit is making me lose my mind lol

    • @RookieMistakeYT
      @RookieMistakeYT 3 роки тому

      12-24 hours is optimal. The rule in our shop is you always start the day by reclaiming or “washing out” screens (if needed). Then end the day with coating screens so they’re allowed to dry overnight. I will say though that I have gotten caught in an extreme rush order that was do or die and let it dry in dark room with fan for about 2 hours and made it work. I think the key was not using as much pressure while washing it out after exposing (used the mist setting up close on design instead of a powerful stream setting).

    Emulzhion / Emulsion
    Potato, Potahto
    Anyway... nice, neat job. You clean EVERYTHING.
    Most guys are in such a hurry, that screens & scoop coaters get destroyed
    because they won't take the time to properly degrease, and clean up when they're done. Then, material
    & tools have to be replaced prematurely. Not to mention when you're ready to burn, only to discover
    that your screens aren't usable because someone coated dirty screens, with contaminated emulsion,
    with a jacked-up coater. Off-the-chain aggrevating, cuz you gotta get that printed NOW. And when it
    comes to deadlines... customers are brutal & don't wanna hear it. "You said #@&$@#!"
    It's such a simple concept. Anything worth doing, is worth doing the right way.
