Yay! It’s Carnival Time!! It’s too easy to find bakeries here that make REALLY good King Cakes, so I have stopped making my own. But when I did make it, I would take the last few pieces that invariably no one wanted (not filled enough, etc), and turn that into a bread pudding with a whiskey icing and colored sprinkles. Mardi Gras in South Louisiana is just so much fun!
Wow, looks delicious!! I did not know that King Cake was actually bread!! I've never eaten it before. Your King Cake looks scrumptious! Definitely going to have to make this. Yummm!! ❤
Sam, I've seen King Cake before; I've never made or eaten it....YET! My friend Amy Murray is from Louisiana and she makes them every year; that's where I learned of King Cake 😘😉now... question; what if you don't have any "bread" flour? Can ya Substitute?
You’re mixing 2 recipes… Galette des rois “Cake of the Kings” with the fève, the baby inside is for #Epiphanie not Mardi Gras which is the carnaval and would either be a puffed up brioche with sugar on top or a frangipane, a delicious almond custard baked between 2 puff pastries. Whoever finds the baby inside is the King 🤴 2 puff pastries 1 bottom, 1 top Almond cream - 1 stick+2Tbsp butter, 1/2 + 1/4 cup sugar; 1/2 +1/4 cup almond powder + 1/2tsp almond extract; 2 eggs Mix softened butter and sugar Add almond powder + almond extract Mix well How to make crème pâtissière (custard) - 2 cups milk; 1/4 cup flour; 1/2 cup sugar; 1 tsp vanilla extract; 2 egg yolks Bring the milk to a boil then turn off and let it cool to room temperature and add vanilla or other In another bowl mix the eggs + salt + sugar + flour Poor the warm milk on top and put the bowl back on a double boiler and keep mixing until the liquid thickens and becomes more of a crème (cream) Then save it in a bowl and let it cool Mix almond cream & crème pâtissière to have “Frangipane” and bake it in between the puff pastries. Egg wash the top of your pastry then make a hole in the center. You can research patterns that you can implement with the back of a knife Then bake it 🤔 I don’t know 375* until the top is golden (20min or so) it’s #DELICIOUS ! 😉
I'm from Louisiana and I can't wait to try your recipe of King Cake :)
I hope you love it! 😊

Oh! And you can place a dried bean inside of the cake instead of the baby, if you want to bake the surprise in.
That sounds delicious!
Yes! SWLA here. I totally want to try your left over king cake idea. That sounds amazing.
Great idea! 😋🔥💯

Can you use sourdough starter instead of dry yeast
I haven't tried it. I think it could work but there would probably need to be some alterations in the process.
@@SugarSpunRun how much should I stsrt with trying to equal the ammount of dry yeast you used?
I’m not confident to make a suggestion without having tried it, sorry 😞

I'm sorry I missed this one! You can use all-purpose flour as 1 to 1 substitute here. :)
Miss Sam, would friendship starter work in this recipe?
I honestly have never tried it so I'm not sure how to do it or if it would work. I'm sorry. :(
