Thank you for documenting this derailment in Hamilton, Ohio and the long CSX train that had to be detoured because of the derailment, Jay Tooth! That person in the car who wanted to turn left on the cross street finally got tired of waiting for the train to pass and decided to turn right on the cross street in order to find another way to go where he wanted to go. Your initial scoping out of the aftermath of the derailment showed how you wanted to give us the best information that you could so that we could see what happened and how many rail cars were involved in the derailment. The work of the R. J. Corman crews was interesting to watch especially their efforts to try to put that one auto rack back on its wheel sets.
nice job JT! what a great affectionate car you have there. she's still thanking you for saving her and giving her a home (even if you Did take for that trip to the vet!).
FYI: Unless the rules / laws has changed, if the derailed auto racks are loaded those autos must be destroyed. They are not allowed to remove any parts from the autos that were on a derailed auto rack. In my worst derailment the last two cars that derailed were two loaded auto racks. They were still upright and the second car still had the rear truck on the rail. Before I left the accident site a federal employee took down all of the VIN numbers. He is the one that told me all of the autos must be crushed.
Probably the stresses on the cars that have been through a train crash are unknown, and nobody wants the liability of what might happen if there is hidden damage and that damage causes an accident or if the crash protection doesn’t work in the case of a subsequent ‘normal’ accident. It seems like a waste but I understand why they would do that.
As I understand it, that’s where most of the cars for the 80s television series Night Rider came from and why most of them no longer exist. There was a derailment in somewhere in the Southwest and the production company acquired the cars under the condition (because it was law) they be destroyed when the cars we’re no longer need for filming.
Probably a lot of the cars in these auto racks, have been on order for the buyers for at least two or three months. Now they have to start all over again. That would suck.
Oh man...What a mess. Its amazing though how fast the workers are in getting everything straightened out. The cranes they use to lift the cars are cool. Nice catch on the CSX train. She was a long one. I wonder if the Autoracks had any vehicles on them? Shoutout to Chessie and Norfie!! Thanks again Jaw Tooth!
While I was in the USAF, we would sometimes have to move an aircraft that was stopped short of the parking spot. The KC-135 weighs about 105,000 pounds empty and would have about 30,000 of fuel still on board. One person could roll it a few feet forward without too much effort.
Crazy but true says me, old security policeman with 11 years of flightline security. But let's not talk about the crew chief who was fueling his AC and got it out of balance. Broken tail boom.
@@paulhoffman6371 we caught a security policeman sleeping on the job one night. We quietly borrowed his M-16, and went back to our aircraft. When he woke up, a bit panicked, we offered his weapon back. He stated he was going to tell his boss. We asked him exactly what are you going to tell him, and headed back to the aircraft. We figured it was a good wake up call.
We were just talking about bad CSX track conditions over on WWOT especially at grade crossings. Things that make you say hmmmmmm. BTW it takes very little effort to move a single car on level track. We used to use goat foot levered car movers to move cars that weighed over 100 tons on a slight grade as long as the rail was dry. Congratulations on outstanding coverage of this incident. Great video!

A bit different to my day working on the steam breakdown crane. It all arrives by road now! Another very interesting video J. T.
Watching the autorack get rerailed/set back upright is interesting seeing the coordation between the man on the ground and the 2 crawler operators. Good catch on the YN2 paint Dash 8-40CW on the rerouted train.

It’s a wonder that the signal mast is still standing upright. BTW, I have one of those dark blue CSX box cars on my layout compliments of my grandson. Always rains son. Thanks Jaw.
This explains why I saw a train going northbound on the Norfolk Southern rails through Sharonville on my way home Friday. I've only seen southbound trains on that route, so I thought a northbound was strange. It was a loooong train too, Thanks for sharing this!
Hey Jawtooth, great coverage of the derailment. I remember as a kid in the 70's, derailments would happen on the line going through town and it seemed like the while town would be there checking it out. It was always fascinating. I remember being able to get right up pretty close. Alot of times the trains would be full of wood products, lumber and plywood and the RR would let whoever wanted it haul it off. Obviously, times have changed, safety now the big thing, for obvious reasons.
Wow that's a shame this happened like any other derailment. Glad to see Rj Corman on the scene to get everything restored. Those wheelset axels weigh 3000lbs each.
I got a DVD from Pentrex called Today's Chicago Railroads where they went through a bunch of hotspots around Chicago, and one of them was in an industrial neighborhood. It was interesting segment, as they showed how the train crew had to track down truck drivers whose trucks were blocking the rails and the switches were in the street themselves. My favorite part was how the neighborhood people who were going to the scrap yard would help out the railroad crew by pushing the car along on the rails to couple to the rest of the train.
Hopefully nobody was hurt as a result. The railfan in me is disappointed you weren't on scene for the action. This video is better than the last episode of "The Hoffman Family Still Can't Find Gold"!
You know Son , I worry bout Mr String and The Yard buzzards over those derailments ... Good catch tho ... Norfie has the best demeanor ... On to another JT production ...
It is totally amazing that the signal bridge and control box went untouched in all that carnage right around it! Yep, autos scrapped. I've seen many an autorack derailment at work where all the vehicles in the rack got scrapped. Usually, the rack would sit on one of the rip tracks till the claim agent accesses the load then I go on my off days then come back the rack has disappeared. That is typically how it has happened in my case. I don't know where the autoracks go from there but, i do know the cars are scrapped for liability reasons.

That tank car was probably easier to move than we think because of gravity. The tracks there may have had a slight downward slope.
Jus depends, if it is filled than it would way 100 tons or more, the locomotive itself weighs 100-200 tons, if empty than usually around 30-40 tons
