In this Shine On You Crazy Diamond guitar lesson video series, I will show you note-for-note how to play parts 1-5 of this Pink floyd classic.
Parts 1-5 open the Wish You Were Here album and for most of the later Pink Floyd tours, it is this portion of the song that is usually played live to open the shows. For that reason I will just focus on part the more well known parts 1-5.
At over 13 minutes long this will be quite the epic lesson series. In fact, I have broken this lesson series up into 4 separate video lessons to make everything a bit easier to learn. I will note though, that the video lessons are numbered parts 1, 2, 3 and 4, but they don't have anything in common with those specific sections of the song. The video lessons are simply divided into what I thought was a good stopping point for each video in order to make them more easy to follow.
The guitar solos throughout this marathon track are some of David Gilmour's finest work and I hope you enjoy learning these beautiful solos note-for-note.
In the first video lesson, I will show you the opening guitar solo which is absolutely gorgeous over the synthesizer pad. This solo contains a lot of pre-bends that David Gilmour masterfully keeps in tune. It is quite the challenge no matter what level player you are, especially if you add vibrato to the bends. After that comes the main riff of the song that builds up to the full band entering.
In the second video lesson, I will cover David Gilmour's second solo note-for-note. Just like the opening solo, David Gilmour creates a melodic solo using techniques that seem easy but are very difficult to master. After the solo section, I will then show you the guitar parts being played under the synth solo.
The third video lesson will be dedicated exclusively to David Gimour's third guitar solo. This solo has a little bit more gain to it since the dynamics of the song have been slowly building up to this point. Because of that, this solo sounds a little bit more aggressive than the first two.
The last video will finally cover the verse sections, the interlude and the cool arpeggio patterns that occur underneath the sax solo before everything fades out.
There are countless cool guitar technique in this Shine On You Crazy Diamond guitar lesson series, so I hope you guys enjoy tackling all of them with me! :) #shineonyoucrazydiamondguitarlesson #pinkfloyd #guitarcovers

I've been playing Floyd for 10 years obsessively, and I just realized that the most important part of his tone is learning to use the whammy bar almost everytime he holds the bends up to get his sound bang on. Especially if this song, but even in his huge bends in Time or Another Brick....if you havent tried it out yet, trust me.
I noticed in a live video that David used the whammy bar for the vibrato on this song. It was a later video from a solo concert, so wasn't sure if it was something he switched over to doing as he got older or if it was played that way originally. In my opinion, it's the only way to reliably hold those bends and apply the necessary vibrato.
Bend and use Whammy at the same time it sounds like Gilmour would try this at the very least. He probably has tried everything else.
*We need dogs 3 solos lesson Carl, please! and thanks for all your hard work and great lessons!*
*KEEP POSTING PINK FLOYD LESSONS!*
we neeeed more Pink Floyd
You've just changed my plans for today's evening.
He changed my plans for about a year lmao
These are really good lessons. Though I am a beginner at guitar (and am ignoring the opening solo for the moment for that reason), I design speakers for a living, so can't be said to be a beginner at music. What sets this apart is that these lessons actually sound like the original music - which I tend to know by heart. It makes life so much easier when what you are being taught lines up with what you know, and then you just have to produce that yourself. And this also goes for all the little inflections and nuances that you know are there, which aren't scooted over or missed, and that adds up to a much more 'musical' result - which also keeps you on the right lines.
Carl Brown made a deal with the Devil. I don't know what Carl got, but the Devil got guitar lessons.
+Ilir Piliki I got my hair... haha
can you please please please teach whiplash by metallica
GuitarLessons365Song I've always wondered how you got that hairstyle, now everything is so clear!! LOL
Anyways, thanks for your lessons man, keep the great work going, you're the best!!! Greetings from Italy! 🎸

I realize that David uses the echo, but it's tough to follow while learning the song.
I have to say, out of all the guitar teachers on youtube you have to be my favourite. Always concise and to my knowledge, one of the most accurate. I also really enjoy how you show what the musicians do in live recordings. Cheers
Teaching is definitely your forte! You are absolutely brilliant at teaching songs, and teaching them with almost meticulous accuracy.
one of my favorite songs of alltime just amazing solos and guitar work
Going through all four. I got alot of the whole song down, now it's time to master it. Thank you for all the details!!
One of the greatest songs ever written, a true masterpiece
Gilmour, you broke my high e string.
The Man You need extra light strings. I use Ernie Ball "Extra" (not "Super") Slinkies as many musicians use because they are highly bendable and stay in tune very well once they are broken in as any strings. Although he uses his signature brand of GHS Boomers which are only like $6
I find it impossible to play Gilmour bends with light strings. You always have to bend them so far with less tension.
Lol i learn many pink floyd song on acoustic guitar including this ans yes i broke my string many times🤣
lol had to laugh some wicked bends my goodness....
@@willhart9834 I did use Dunlap Rev. Willeys 7s but they were too light. I settled with 8s and they do just fine.
Sounds so simple until you actually go to play it. Great tutorial. I’ve been watching this series over and over to get it just right
I'm still somewhat a beginner and your tutorials are the only ones on youtube that help me man, thanks so much for everything you do I really appreciate it.
Just started working on this tune this past weekend. My fingers will never be the same.
Just brilliant! And you make the lesson so easy to understand without any complex descriptions about strange chord or note names.
You're lessons are absolutely fantastic. I usually just watch lessons for licks and technique, I'll never play this song front to back, but still will watch more than once and appreciate the terrific instruction.
Thank you so much for this lesson Carl. This has always been one of my favorite songs and 6 months ago this guitar newb never thought he could even attempt this song. You made it a reality for me with this great lesson. I salute you
Loved the lesson! This proves how cool Dave Gilmour is. You don’t need to be a shredder and death metal player or whatever to be good (like how loads of people are obsessed with shredding). All you need to have is soul to wow the crowd.
FútbolMon good point! How many death metal shredders can you name who’ve sold over 250,000,000 albums?
Appreciate the lessons mate! Perhaps once you finish SOYCD, you could begin teaching Dogs? That would be great. Thanks in advance mate.
Cheerful Lad not dogs, how about pigs (3 different ones)
liamfenwicker Even better, how about all of the tracks off of Animals? Overall though, I'd be grateful for any, as they're damn good songs.
Cheerful Lad I will pay Carl $40,000 to do the entire Animals album, consecutively of course :)
Cheerful Lad
Oh yeah, You could try teaching dogs. My dog would appreciate it greatly. Thanks!
Dogs is great, yes please.
One of the best instructional vids I have ever seen. Thank you for this. Can't wait to get into 2 through 4.

THANK YOU for making this video. shame on those two people that left a dislike.
Thank you so much Carl! This is the most excited I've been for a lesson ever
Love your lessons Carl. I'd like to see a version without the delay/reverb because makes it hard to understand some of the more complex parts.
Thanks Carl! I really appreciate your tutorials!
THANK YOU CARL YOU ARE THE BEST IVE BEEN WANTING THIS LESSON FOR SO LONG NOW
Love ALL your videos. You are my go to guy for learning stuff for the band. Just to make sure I’m using the right chords etc etc. thanks man.

GREATTTTT!!! GRACIAS GRACIAS GRACIAS GRACIAS GRACIAS GRACIAS GRACIAS FOR THIS LESSON!!! YOURE THE BEST!!
Very nice apart from that echo echo echo echo at times....very clear and concise lesson
Fantastic lessons, thanks for this .
AMAZING LESSON
Thanks for the lesson! the opening solo is easy to play but hard to memorize... I'll have to play it over and over many times haha
Memorizing stuff is my difficulty too! I signed up to play this whole lead part, in November, with a musicians' collective that does different cover shows every month. I'll give myself a couple of weeks to decide whether I can actually memorize it all by then, so that if I have to back out, there will be time for someone else to learn it. (Some of the guys in the group already know it, anyway. We did a Pink Floyd show last year, and someone played it.)
I had already learned most of SOYCD when I was in college, so this will be a matter relearning it. But .... the old memory cells just don't work like they used to!
A tutorial on “echoes” by Pink Floyd would be heavenly good
Was waiting for it for a long time
I learned this from YOU!
“I learned it from watching YOU!”
NICE!! So fuckin cool how you taught that. "Shine on..." is my ultimate goal on guitar this week. Im a beginer but I'm not scared off; Thank you
Awesome stuff man, thanks for giving this to us! Is there any chance you could do one for the two solo's in "wearing the inside out" also? Best,
Finally! Thank you soooo much Carl!❤️
I just got a new Strat!!
have to say. This is awesome lesson. thank you. really good videos.
Ok. Im ready to learn this song. Will be back to inform how many strings i have broke. Hehehe. Tks! Great song and lesson!
Amazing contents my friend. 🙌🏻
Are there any chances to make Sorrow, Dogs, Echoes and Marooned? Those are gems.
Cheers
Already have Dogs on the channel… will do some of the others soon
Great Lesson! Do you have any video on getting that signature tone from the processor?
i wish you give a lesson on a great day for freedom Solo PArt !!!!!!!!!!!!
Great job Carl. You’re always the go to guy for learning Floyd. Could I ask a massive favour. Could you do a tutorial on the acoustic Melrdown version David plays. I think that would be amazing for us all Floyd fan guitarists to learn.
beautiful, I love you man.
Great lesson mate really cool stuff
You have a nice effortless touch very similar to David's
Great video easy to understand Cool👍
Echoes carl! You can do it! Love these lessons
Thanks!!! Cádiz (Spain)
Oh, man. This is great. Thank you!
thank you for the lesson very very good man
Hey Carl, student of your guitar academy here. What are the chances of you doing more Pink Floyd lessons? Possibly Sorrow or On the Turning Away? I almost have the Sorrow solo down but a few of the licks involving open strings are hard for me to get note for note
I have some planned... was checking out sorrow the other day, it’s difficult to keep my strat in tune during the intro 🤣
GuitarLessons365Song oh my I feel your pain. I have been learning the notes of the fretboard for the past few weeks and about to dive into the rock improvisation level 1 lessons and I hope overtime I will gain a better understanding of scales so I can pick up on songs faster
best song ever made idc what anyone says
excellent lesson thank you. curious about your pickups? what kind are they? hot rails? Humbuckers in a single coil, yes>
Thank you ✨
Love them chopper T pick ups
Thank you Carl.
Beautiful song nice playing 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶💥

You’re a God
Hey Carl, this is a really good lesson. By the way, do you recommend using the neck pickup for this song?
Was your channel down a day or 2 ago your channel dissapeard as i was learning this haha i started freaking out🤣
What pedals do you use? Anyway, gj. Nice vid.
Carl thanks for the time you put into this, do you have tabs to go along with the 1 -4 lessons ?
