- Stereo premiere - "Buckle Down, Winsocki" was the big hit from "Best Foot Forward", which transferred from Broadway with much of the original cast intact. A great song by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane, who also did the beautiful vocal arrangement. You would think Tommy Dix had a bright film career ahead, but he made only one other film, instead becoming a nightclub singer and finally working in his Dad's lumber business. I think he's still alive - anyone have contact info?
My dad was in this movie and is still sharp as a tack at 93!
That's fantastic! Was he an extra, or did he have a speaking role?
My father used to sing this song to us when I was a kid. He served in the US Army from 1943-1945. He was a big fan of war movies. RIP Edward K Benzler 1926-2004!
😊😊
My dad used to sing this too. RIP Dad (1918-1991) a WWII vet & Army LTC
One time when I was driving my elderly mom (who had dementia) to a doctor's appointment and I reminded her to buckle up, she started singing this song! Remembering it still makes me smile. She was a HUGE fan of movie musicals and theater.
She may also have been remembering the long-running TV commercial "Buckle Up For Safety, Buckle Up!"
@@boinx1234 That makes sense! I don't remember the commercial. Was it the same tune?

Yup, I'm here after showing my young student the old Buckle Up for Safety commercial on UA-cam, and reading several comments that it came from this song. All my life I'd never known that, so, here i am! What I like to call "One of those You-live-long-enough moments." Thoroughly enjoyed it.
My great grandfather was in that
Tommy Dix was in the original B'way musical as was were June Allyson and Nancy Walker. Tommy Dix is still alive. He'll be 100 in December 2024.
Alive and still showing a sweet and sponky character. I told him he looks like Mickey Rooney. He said they shared a double. Tommy is my neighbor.
Oh lovely. I used to see, help Tommy Dix at the local big box store ... He has always been a treasured customer to me. I bought a photo of him and framed it. ❤❤❤ Always my best regards to a gem. 💖💖💖💖
Ha!!!!! Movie of the week I saw many times as a kid watching Movie Host Bernie Herman in Philly!!!!
TMBG did a great cover of this
Who else is here from TMBG???
Yep! And I have to say this cover version is not as good as the TMBG original.
@@roseanderson783 This is not a cover version. This is sung by the same person who originally sang the song in the Broadway show that the film was based on. "They Might Be Giants" is the cover.
It’s cool to hear the original song, and now love the TMBG version even more!!! 👍🏻
Tommy Dix - 100 years Old Today- Happy Birthday Tommy!!
My mom loved this movie, this song, and the singer. I think she had hopes that I would live the life of the character in the film, singing, dancing, and leading the parade. Boy did I let her down. Sorry Ma.
I met him 2 days ago! He sang this song to me as if it were yesterday. 🥰
Wow - that's great! How is he? Where is he?
People may not remember but this song was used in the 60s as the theme song for the new auto seat belt campaign except it was called "Buckle Up". That's how I came to know it.
Tommy Dix wasn't dubbed by someone else. That's his real voice. It was a surprise at the end of the show that this little guy had such a big, deep voice.
Who said he was dubbed? If he had been, I would have credited the dubber. He was famous for his voice.
@@boinx1234 He was, but in the past, I heard people say he must have been dubbed. This even included comments here on UA-cam when someone else posted it. I glad to hear you have a high standard of accuracy.
@@John_Fugazzi Yeah - I always include and credit a dubber if needed!
I think the reason some people may have thought he was dubbed is because he used his "squeaky" voice in "Three Men On A Date", which was probably to save his true singing voice as a surprise for "Buckle Down, Winsocki".
Outstanding performance
My 7th grade science teacher used to sing this to us.
THIS WAS SUCH A GREAT CATCHY TUNE!
Just got done watching this movie! Hilarious!! He really looks like he enjoyed singing that song! Too bad he didn't stay in show biz he had such a beautiful voice!
Great Film! 🙂! One of MGM BEST!
Best school fight song ever. Ever.
Not a real fight song.
Great song from a great movie! Never heard the extra lyrics before!
I love this song. MGM always put out good musical movies.
Cool, never heard that last part. Thanks to the studio for making it available and for posting! Great song, we need this confident (not boastful) American exuberance back again.
Sweet I had not heard the last unused part of the song. I thought this song and the movie were the bees knees!🐝🦵
Outstanding!
Tommy is alive and well living in Virginia. He still has that great voice and is funny as heck.
Something from my era! Wow!
Loved it!!!!
Excellent!!😀
Felix Unger owns this!
Winsocki!!!
Tony Randall and Jack Klugman sent me.
HA! Me too.
Are they singing about the Amish ? ? :) (I'm from Lancaster, Pennsylvania but escaped to California.) Great number ! Love MGM.
Yo some invisible dude song this s to me.
I thought it was buckle down Jen Psaki.
🙄
Recently recorded (2020) by They Might Be Giants fwiw.
Little-known fact: Tommy's nickname was Donkey.
Why?
Lucille Ball's biography brought me here 😊
What are the begining lyrics about the Pennsylvania Dutchman? Conceding to the Dutchman? Is that a different song or part of the Winsocki song? I have searched and cannot find anything about them.
I think it's the name of a football team.
@@boinx1234 Correct. The Winsocki team name is the Pennsylvania Dutch.
@@tommytimp That's what I thought.
"If you shout hooray for the Pennsylvania Dutchmen ..." is the verse to "Buckle Down, Winsocki". They aren't two different songs, but all part of the same song. The film doesn't go into the background information that the original play did. There are lines in the original play that state that the football team is the Winsocki Pennsylvania Dutchmen.
Why did everybody look 40?
What is WInsocki?
A fictional college.
The original lyrics for "You can win, Winsocki, if you ring the bell" were "You can win, Winsocki, if you give ''em hell" The Puritan Pukes of that era wouldn't let that pass.
One thing I see and wish to mention.......the young ladies in the 1940s (Or is it just in the movies?) dress very well. Today, girls just wear ripped up jeans and tee shirts, or sweats, scubs, whatever. These girls, sure it is a special occassion, but throughout the film, are dressed very nice. Seem most guys just want to see naked women, but I think a well dressed....not gaudy, etc......young lady looks pretty damn good. But that is just me. Old school, I guess.
Nope, it's me too. I've never seen a woman totally naked that looked sexier than if she was wearing something (and I've seen plenty of them). My imagination is more erotic than the real thing.
You are so correct! So nice to see a lady dressed as such, with class! There aren't many; so glad I found mine!:)
Few day after Thanksgiving stools have as much corn !
Awesome!!!!
