As a mixed race guy at University in the 80's, I did officer training for the Army. Everything went OK for 3 years and I was at bases all round the UK for CIOR competition until one day I had to go again to Brookwood. There was a different unit on guard duty that weekend and they had never seen my junior officer badge before so they asked me about it. Soon as I told them I was training to be an officer, they said "no white soldier would ever follow a black officer into battle." That was the day the dream died. Editing this bit in for those who think I "gave up" too easy - go and look at history records and see what happened in battle to junior lieutenants that the soldiers didn't like or wish to follow into battle. 2nd and 1st lieutenants often have high mortality rates anyway but trust in the military is a two way thing - you trust the person taking you into battle and you trust the men you lead to follow your orders. I did join - as an ordinary grunt and I served my 4 years. OK - back to the original post below. Reading what happened to Kerry-Ann Knight, nothing has really changed. White squaddies accuse the ethnic minority population of not being patriotic but when we do try and sign up - the same squaddies are the ones shrouding racist abuse at ethnic minority troops.

Soon as I told them I was training to be an officer, they said "no white soldier would ever follow a black officer into battle."
That was the day the dream died.

Its true. Problem is the media and certain establishments, have deliberately pushed the narrative that anti black racism isn't endemic in the UK, and in most cases the victim faces being discredited or even blamed directly.
RAF Police etc . just mediocrity is metastasizing

As a blackman who has worked in hospitality in northern England, this is a reflection of British Society. I got many racist remarks and treatment, both direct, indirect and subtle that i just ignore.
We're in the year 2024 and still have to deal with this level of human ignorance.. God help us all
She's a good looker ! The problem is Men bullying a woman like that as if it was a Man they could retaliate in a way such bullies understand. Well done Kerry-Ann. I was called into a H.R. meeting at a former employer, RSA the insurance company, after filing a complaint. Ambushed really with no prior warning.
I was calm throughout the meeting, and when I asked if they had finished and if I could leave, they were visibly disappointed.
When I walked out of the room, I saw security personnel outside the door and dotted along the corridor. I realized their disappointment stemmed from there not being an incident. It became clear to me that they had hoped to engineer an incident and then have reason to sanction me. That's when I knew my complaint had placed a big fat red dot on me.
I salute you Kerry-Ann. Some of us fought back and didn't win. You fought back and won. I consider it a win for all of us black women bullied and harassed in the work place. Bless you.
