  • This is a video I produced about the American Victory Ship, a fully-functioning World War II steamship located in Tampa Bay. Every two and a half years, the American Victory must undergo a Coast Guard inspection, required for her to set sail in the future. The dry docking process can be pricey, so the American Victory Ship Board of Directors asked me to produce an informational video showing the special place the vessel has in the community and the importance of funding the restoration project.

Sailed on two for the "Old" Holland America Line as engineer in1961/62. Then still old fashioned breakbulk cargo before containers took over. You just turned them on in Rotterdam and off you went. Never any problems very different than the balky enormous diesels that pretty much have displaced steam.

Really enjoyed seeing this ship. It truly is great seeing it up close and inside. I am going on the cruise this Saturday on this ship. Can't wait!

There were many Victory ships that came through the munitions port in Sattahip Thailand in 1968. I was stationed there at Camp Vayama. I have clear pictures of the Hattiesburg Victory while it was there. I do not remember the 'American Victory". There was one very old ship, the SS Andrew Jackson, that came in and it still had steam winches. There were also two Lykes lines ships that came through while I was there the 'Alison Lykes' and the 'Charlotte Lykes' - these two were newer and and very good shape.

@@russelljohnson7067 The group that I was with in Thailand had all gone through the harbor craft boatswain course, 61B30, at Ft Eustis in 1967. From Eustis it was on to Ft Story to learn how to operate a LARC V. Then we transferred to a stevedore company, still at Ft Story, where we made E4 and were assigned the 57H20 as primary MOS.
      When were you in Okinawa?
