I drove an 82 4x4 luv deisel my senior year of highschool back in 2014. She was rusty as hell but It got mid 30s mpg and cost 25 bucks to fill up. Had to run the fuck out of it just to keep up with traffic but looking back I wouldn'tve rather drove anything else back then
My stepdad bought one of these brand new with the 1.8 liter gas engine and I bought it from him in 1987. If I remember correct the gas engine was 80 HP and had mid 90's ft. lbs. of torque, but at a lower RPM. I think the truck only weighed around 2300 lbs. and I could pull a 2400 lb. boat and trailer up to about 65 MPH if I didn't run the air conditioner, and around 60 MPH if I did (this was in Florida). Without the boat I think I got it up to around 85 MPH, so not the fastest vehicle in the world. This was a rust bucket for sure and I had a friend who worked at a body shop, so we repaired the rust (welded in new metal) and painted it in 1990. In three more years it had a ton of rust and holes again in places that weren't repaired the first time, so traded it in. I went through two clutches because I pulled the boat a lot, but the engine ran as good as new even when I traded it in with 170,000 miles on it. Those were hard miles too because I towed that boat twice most weekends around 30 miles to and from the boat ramp. I was young and this was a cheap truck that was good on gas and could pull my boat, so at the time I wouldn't have owned anything else. However, I'll admit when the holes developed on the roof and floorboard (the second time) I was over owning this thing. Great memories! Thanks for posting.
My father in law tells me that a shipment of Chevy Luvs was docked outside port manatee and took them a little to long to unload so they all got rusty before they got off the ship they scrapped them all
I'll take one. 2wd long bed with the diesel. I'll figure out a way around the 58hp. I'm not an Isuzu guy but these were damn good trucks first few years of ownership before the body rusted through
If they manufactured this today it would be bigger then it needed to be and cost the same as a full size truck.... oh wait... that's exactly what they're doing with the Colorado and Canyon. 😑
By the time you spec out a Canyon or Colorado you might as well buy the Sierra or Silverado. Only way to get away with paying less than the 1500 is to buy the small truck stripped down
@@CT_Taylor i bought a 2014 challenger SXT plus in January 2015 when they were trying to push them out the sticker price was $32K but it sat on the lot into the next calendar year. They came down on the price to $25K. Had it been any other time of the year, for $32K, I would have bought the R/T
@@videonut1988 from what i've read over the years, GM joined the compact truck market simply as brand-sharing, and to broaden their sales market. When the Arab oil embargo happened in '73, it forced them to consider designing their own domestically produced compact pick-up. The cross over of LUV & the S-series pick-ups in '82 were simply due to the limited amount of production vehicles being ready for the NA market, and was held over to keep them in the compact market 'til production kinks were worked out by the '83 model year.
The rear two stage leaf springs, torsion bar and lack of a v6 engine alone are signs this wasn't a real Chevy. But as long as you didn't try to haul much or gulp bring it up to the snow belt, these things did the job. But the s10 was a far superior design over all.

Jesus Christ. 58hp's from a diesel even if it's a diesel it's absolutely gutless. they should have fitted it with an Isuzu 4BC2 engine or a 4BD1 engine.
Isuzu was built by Isuzu in Tokyo, Japan. Isuzu Diesel trucks were and still sold all over the world. Mainly in third world countries that are run over loaded over the roughest roads in the world. Look it up..
