@@VanoverMachineAndRepair oh i am sure it does work! Can't wait to see how you engineered it I have 2 lathes I thought doing it on would be the cats ass, but never made the time
Very interesting Kyle. That rear cover/housing came off hard. Glad it did not break. Wow that tail stock is heavy. Nice job with the needle scaler. I need to get one of those. Have a good weekend. 👍
Thanks. Now I realize those taper pins had holes tapped for extraction. Even so might still have been totally stuck but hey you learn something new everyday.
Nice job! And no, a follower rest is very much necessary even with 4140ht as with the length it have flexed in the center giving you much chatter and variation in the profile due to insert cutting edge wear or chipping. Just for info, if you were to do a lead screw, lead tolerance over a 12 inches would be around 0.005” if not less. But since this a tail stock screw, lead can be a little less “ tight” and the main consideration being the length of the tail stock nut in the quill (interference within the thread engagement male to female. As for thread lead, the main difference being between cut Vs ground threads. While I don’t have any machines with ball screws or digital read out, I can see the benefit of those betterments!
this is actually mashtroy lathe it was made in bulgaria. lion is another brand of same company. I have same lathe in my school. This machine works perfectly everyday.
The only part I don't like is watching the original badging go. But I'm glad you're taking such great care in the restoration, great work.
Yeah. They are restored and will go back but at the end.
That tailstock is no joke 600 lbs Wow !
Yeah
This was really interesting. I restored a Deckel FP-3, and learned about taper pins. Can't wait to see the 2 apeed idea.
Next video
thanks Kyle for your in-depth coverage of the Lion Lathe. best wishes from Orlando, Florida, Paul
My pleasure! Lots more to come
I love the way you capture what you are doing with angle of camera.....well done Kyle
Thanks Paul
It's fascinating how some machine's individual parts scale perfectly with size.
Yes indeed
597. Wow that is a beast of a tailstock.
Yeah it is
That lathe is after this work better as she (he ) was on building in the factory. Greetings from Germany.

Really loving this restoration!

Indeed I am sure it’s less than. 005 of run out
Please get a copper hammer for disassembly. PB swiss makes nice ones. Otherwise thumbs up as always
I have several. I don’t always use them

Awesome thanks
Was there no filler on that casting, or did needle scaler just make it appear that way? Wonderfully massive 🙌
There was tons of filler lol. Maybe hard to tell. Some areas are worse than others
