Sylvie
Gorecki uses themes of misery and despair often but he also used motherhood as a motif, even his darkest music has a tenderness in its heart. I love these pieces and Chicago Symphony did it beautifully.
I first heard this in Glasgow in the early 90's and have not stopped listening to it since. We lost a wonderful composer and servant of God when Henryk died. He has been slated by a lot of people for only composing one hit. Those critics haven't a clue!
You are so right. I love the 3rd Symphony, but he also wrote great string quartets, much spiritual music (such as this) and a wonderful harpsichord concerto. His genius goes way beyond his "one hit"!
The build up in this is absolutely mesmerising - as the voices layer, you get this beautiful, rich sound that fills you up completely. Music like this is just wonderful - whether or not you are religious (I, for example, am not).
The irony of the idea of a completely meaningful meaninglessness. Some logic goes missing. Some chasm wistfully bridged by nothing at all. Such faith in faithlessness. No! Please - No!
I love it. These songs were written during the Solidaritat movement in Poland where people were beaten simply for sitting and protesting. This was the result of that protest. So beautiful.
Magnificent. Whether intentional or not, a deeply theological statement, depending on one's understanding -- that the first addressing and acknowledging phrase"Domine Deus noster" (our Lord God) builds through nearly 90% of the piece before the asking request of "Miserere nobis" (have mercy on us) comes in. The layering of voices and the delicate handling of this, by both composer and performers, left me speechless and feeling in a holy "thin place."
I have three (3) things I want to say/ask about this piece: This truly is a masterpiece that, to me, seems underrated. I love how each movement has the "progressive" feel, that is, more and more voices are added, and the dynamic gets louder and louder. It's so powerful! Secondly, I envy and wonder how the choir stays in tune (that is, not eventually going flat after an half hour of singing a cappella). Also, how does each new voice find its starting note? Lastly, what's that clicking sound in the background?
William Ford RE: Staying in tune: I would not be surprised if some folks had tuning forks, and gave themselves a ping to establish pitch before their entrances. The clicking sounds like the rustling of programs in the audience to me.
Domine Deus noster, miserere nobis!
+oblong NPR has an agenda and is anti-Christian. They've been so for quite some time. There is only one religion to which they are kind....although it only represents 2% of the USA population.
so powerfull , ... he must have been so peacfull himself to be able to write such a piece . I wish I knew the words ... does anyone know ? thanks for uploading
+shohreh shakoory The text comprises five words: 'Domine Deus Noster' (Lord our God), which are repeated for the first ten sections, resolved by a chorus of 'Miserere nobis' (Lord have mercy on us) in the eleventh and final section. Both lines of the text are formed as simple but imploring pleas.
I think Arvo Part was the "better" composer (especially more inventive), but i find Gorecki's "Misserere" here, to be a far more solid and whole offering that most of Part's choral works for The Mass. Part's Masses were downright BORING. The Bennedicitus, etc. Three cheers for Gorecki!

Unbelievably beautiful piece and incredible performance. Gorecki is a genius.

Thanks for identifying the words and their meaning.
Whether intentional? Haha.
First time I have ever heard this piece. Soul stirring, deeply moving and absolutely beautiful.
Piękna, głęboko mistyczna muzyka.....
No need for religiosity when this music can transport one as close to ecstatics as is possible in the human heart...I agree with you
You may not believe you are religious, but you've obviously benefited from their religious zeal.
Yes, that is sad. We lost one of the most magnificent composers ever heard nowadays.
He is my favorite composer of all time.

godhavemercyonus composition as a direct protest on militia violence during a sitin in bydgoszcz 1981. Powerful and a wonderful progression.
Truly beautiful and deeply moving.
EIS A ESSENCIA DA ORAÇÃO!
Calm, relaxing, mystical, wonderful...

Magnifique !!!!!
Deeply moving.
When you're in the mood for it this would be splendid.
And the conductor is John Nelson, I believe. Since he put this recording together he should me mentioned.
The description is satisfyingly... descript!
In his music is connected incredible respect to creation with emotion and love to God and world. I'd like to marry this music :)
What a wonderful comment
Just beautiful...
there was more to this composer than his 3rd symphony he was tired of the serial crowd that controls Paris ie Boulez and company
I agree.
#Schonberg
sorry to hear that he was quite a unique voice in music

Upon hearing
Schoenberg people cried to God, "Miserere nobis, Domine" and God listened, giving us Gorecki.
Masterpiece
Mystical Miserere.

Henryk Górecki's Miserere.
Minimalist masterpiece
It is not a music targeted to a mainstream crowd. So bear in mind before you try to comment anything without a knowledge and proper listening. Thanks!
Oh I don't find this piece calm. It is true repentance. Not the sacchrine of Allegri's piece, but deep remorse.
Allegri? Saccharine? Sheesh...

Have you heard the Beatitudes or Credo from the Berliner Masse? Amazing stuff bro
There wasn't "Polish Militia" .... There was "Citizens' Militia" established by Soviet occupant. Please, don't confuse these facts...
Y'all shut up and listen to the pretty music!
I'd rather say that Assange looks like Maestro Górecki
Good. Both brave people...
Looks like Julian Assange
