I met families of Syrian refugees in living in small tents in the middle of the desert south of the Syrian border. There were no jobs for them. They gave up all their worldly possessions and sometimes lost families members on the way, all to end up in a swelteringly hot tent, or a run down building if you are lucky. And still they were grateful. Yet if those Syrian refugees had the option to instead go to a country far more capable and suited to help them, then why the hell shouldn’t they? Why should they burden themselves and burden the smaller, poorer countries they reach just to not seem like they’re “country shopping”?

Also idk how it is in the US, but in the UK before you're officially a refugee you're an asylum seeker and you're legally not allowed to work. So you either get by on a ridiculously small amount of money, or you work illegally for well under the minimum wage. I think its something ridiculous like if you have a baby under 1 years old you get an extra £5 a week. I think there was some Somali enclave, bet that's the exception, and not the norm in America. I think they are a bit more common in Europe, and can be a bit problematic since the people in them don't integrate as well.
