  • A look at the modification process of the Cold Steel Pipe Hawk. A very fun creative process that also allows a connection to the past.

    Great project! I've got a Frontier Hawk by Cold Steel and I'm getting geared up to do similar modifications. Thanks for the inspiration!

    NICE! Love what you've done - you've given me some ideas.
    I've recently bought a Cold Steel Rifleman's hawk and they no longer coat the head in that Horrible gloss paint, they use a matt finish. And I was pleasantly surprised that the top of the handle Didn't look like a feather stick where the head had scraped the handle.

    Brother.. this was so awesome as to defy an adequate compliment. That 'hawk turned out absolutely amazing... a one-of-a-kind piece of craftsmanship. Loved how you included a bit of history in here as well. This one's going in the favorites (not to mention the ol' project list :) Thanks for taking the time to share this man.

      +IntenseAngler appreciate it. Would like to make a couple more of them. It really is a fun process. A lot of different things I like to do all rolled into one project.

    what a fun and creative project! I like the use of the lighter, as well, and the cold blueing. I just used that for the first time when restoring a couple of old rusty and pitted .22 magazines.

    Pipe Hawk is the best Cold Steel model IMO. Large cutting edge and the hammer pawl. I've had mine for a few years and it's going strong. Thanks for sharing.

    • @Cr0cket20
      @Cr0cket20  8 років тому

      +enscribe good to know. They do seem a pretty good value for what you get. Even if I didn't put the stain on it, I do think they still need some work to be optimal, ie edge sharpening and proper head fit.

    I have a rifleman's hawk from Cold Steel and I am impressed on how tuff they are. I took it on a camping trip and used to split firewood and I beat the hell out of it almost trying to break it and it held up. I would bury the head in a log then swing all of it at a tree like a ball bat splitting the log, I did this repeatedly over a week. the hawk survived it all.

    • @Cr0cket20
      @Cr0cket20  8 років тому

      +Tim Goward Nice. I have yet to hard use mine yet. But I keep hearing they are tough.

    You just need to fill the hole where that nasty set screw was. I've got 5 CS tomahawks, and two of the viking axes. And that set screw is vexing. I usually get a bolt and or machine screw from the local hardware story. Then using Red Loctite, screw it in until the bolt is almost but not quiet flush with the inside. Then cut off the extra bolt sticking out. Sand and polish, then finish with Perma Blue. You did a great job.

    The blemish is differential heat treatment. On a lot of blades, it's a desired trait, like the hamon on a Japanese katana.
    I just ordered one, and I hope the heat treating line is more defined all the way across the blade.
    I just realized that this is a 7-year old post.

    Great video sir. Keep us updated on how well it performs. My only concern is the grooves you cut into the shaft, as slight as they are, would be a place over time that would develop a stress fracture and crack on you. Great craftsmanship.

    Keep 'em coming. Love your vid's.
    Got the same, done the same. Found out that cutting wood from the stock is futile. Open up the axe head w a file, so the stock fits in like in a funnel. Remove (a little) metal instead of wood.
    It's razor sharp if treated right, but don't split logs w it. Had to bent the axe head back after splitting. But it's not meant to split though

    • @Cr0cket20
      @Cr0cket20  8 років тому +1

      +Peter Huggins Yes. If you strip off the original coating you will need to blue or force a patina to help protect against rust.

    No wedge? You might want to add a wedge, makes it a lot more secure and looks more sleek because there won't be any holes or imperfections in the handle to the head.

    • @1221vito
      @1221vito 8 років тому +3

      As I understand it wedges aren't used in tomahawks. They are friction fit from the bottom end of the handle up unlike an axe which is fit from the top down and secured using the wedge.

    Btw, thx for sharing the effort w your Thawk.
    Your vid's always help me maintain the dream of my younger age. Regarding removing metal and creating a more wide funnel, then when you need to start "repairing", it's a good idea to start w turning the axe shaft 180 dgr around it's length axis, so what used to be towards the palm of your hand is now towards the finger tips, when you grip. Then wack it firm like you'd already did it by now.
    But their axe heads are to narrow in the top. And if you want to keep the shaft "alive" for a longer periode b4 buying new, this has helped me. Hope this was more clear - you dont have to answer, better make more vids :-D

    the spot on the blade is not really blemish in means of HT quality - it is result of the way that CS HT the blades in mass production quantities - if you have access to a belt grinder you can remove a 0.2-0.4mm from both sides and it must be gone + it will improve the blade geometry

    • @Cr0cket20
      @Cr0cket20  8 років тому

      +Stefan Wolf I was watching some other vids on the CS hawks and saw almost the exact same blemish on someone elses. I think you're right in that its related to their production process. If it were heat treat related I think there wouldn't be such uniformity in the blemish...or maybe I should call it a beauty mark ; )

    A Maddox style handle will usually have a little jiggle in it anyways, especially when new, since it hasn't had a chance to really seat on the handle. However, they've completely went against the whole point of a Maddox handle by just putting that bump stop up at the top of the handle! haha It has nowhere to go to.. Glad you saw that and corrected it early! I really like what you did with this hawk! Great job. How did you burn the lines, such as with the little mountain scene? You said you carved the lines, but how did you burn them? Great video Crocket!

    Stay away from cold steel hawks there’re junk , if you want a great hawk go with CRKT,s line of hawks there a better quality of hawk they had a problem with the handles not fitting properly but now they have fix said problem , they do come with a clear coating on them but if you don’t like the look you can always sand it off . They don’t come sharpe but it only takes around 10 to 15 minutes to put a edge on them . I just got the CRKT WOODS CHOGAN T-HAWK with a 19 inch handle & a1.9 lb head yea it’s beefy but I like it . I modified mine , I didn’t take off the clear coat all I really did is a paracord rap under the beard & I used real paracord not the stuff you see at Walmart & I used a bicycle inertube & stretched it around the handle & made a knob like a baseball bat at the end with inertube so it don’t slip out of my hand & it acts like a bumper if the handle hits what your throwing it at .

      Have just had to return my CRKT hawks as the handles were faulty, I much prefer the Cold Steel now as at least Cold Steel know how the handles are supposed to fit. Regards quality of the steel they are the same, you simply pay extra for nothing more than a slightly fancy handle and grey paint?

      Thanks. After I sent in the question to you, I found someone had Birchwood Casey "Super Blue" is that the same product and if not, have you used both, and if you have which is better for use by a first time bluing by someone who has never done it before?

    Did you put the screw in to keep the head tighter?

    • @Cr0cket20
      @Cr0cket20  5 років тому

      No. I used a wooden wedge to keep it tight. I tried just sanding down the handle but that did not work well. The wooden wedge has worked well and easy to do.

    What did you use to darken the dark parts of the handle, not the burned parts the darker parts?

      Wood stain that I picked up at Lowes or Home Depot. You can actually see it in the yellow cans at about 4:10 min in.

    Makes me want to buy one now!
    Question how was the axes head itself ? Did it stay on while using it?
    Always a great and inspiring video. Keep up the great work.

      +AJ H. I hear you. I went to purchase another one to start work and they are sold out. Didn't look everywhere yet though. With the axe head, so far so good. With the norse hawk, the handle was so bad I will likely have to add something in to keep the head on correctly.

      Awesome I was also researching the CRKT Chogan Woods T-Hawk. Found some reviews but nothing that jumped at me to say "Hey, Buy me know". Only your cold steel video and other gear reviews have that effect on me.... hahah

    Complete novice here; how do you get the head to stay in its place? Ive seen ropes under it a screw through it...

    • @Cr0cket20
      @Cr0cket20  8 років тому

      Some will sand the handle to create a custom fit. I find there is a lot of variability in that. I end up getting a scrap piece of wood, cut/make a wedge from it and use that to place in between the head and handle.

    Great video man. Hey! As a camp tool, would you prefer the pipe hawk, the trail hawk or the rifleman's hawk?

    • @Cr0cket20
      @Cr0cket20  7 років тому +1

      Probably the pipe. Wider blade than the trail. The rifleman would be a good contender but it all depends on what you're looking for. IE if weight matters, chopping power, etc. Depending on what you want to do could highly affect the outcome.

      Austin Prudhomme no the cold steel pipe hawk doesn’t actually have a bowl. It’s bowl end is more of a hammer poll that just looks like the “peace pipe” tomahawk.
