  • Will this Sega Genesis "blast process" again? It's been messed with before, and there is some questionable evidence of tampering. What surprises await inside?

Wow the MK-1631 is straight up going to a horribly compressed mono version while the MK-1631A is full stereo. That's crazy. Thanks for showing that.

It's actually more indicative of the revision, in this case the VA0, as opposed to the model code. They only used MK-1631A temporarily in later VA 2.3s that actually have a bad ASIC chip (315-5685) which incorrectly processes certain graphics in some games. They went back to the MK-1631 model code for the VA3 and VA4 revisions of the Model 2 which improved the audio in a way but also adds a more muddy quality compared to the VA 2/2.3 which has its own faults. It's a pretty deep rabbit hole to go down when comparing as there's strengths and weaknesses throughout the various revisions.

I love retro. It's super cool you can fix stuff like this

I bought an AGB "For Parts" off eBay for $20. Wouldn't power on, so the first thing I did was drop isopropyl into the power switch, slid it back and forth a few times, used canned air to blow it dry, put in fresh batteries and boom, working perfectly again. Coroded switch, so I then just replaced the switch, haven't had a problem with it in 10 years.

I'm sure there's a ton of consoles and handhelds that end up getting tossed that may have only needed some minor repair.

The Genesis model 1 power connector attaches the the motherboard with a cable connector, so plugging/unplugging the power supply doesn't stress a solder joint.

I started this video listening in Dolby Surround and my receiver decided the 1631 music should come through the rear speakers and the 1631A should come through the front. Very odd, to say the least

That is pretty interesting. I wonder if plugging the audio from the 1631 directly into a similar receiver would cause the same thing to happen.

Sometimes you luck out. Be happy it does not happen to often.

The machine you fixed is a launch VA0, while the other is a VA2.3. I own a 2.3 and the audio oddly seems better than mine. The 2.x revisions have an actual YM2612 FM synth chip like early Mega Drive 1s, as opposed to the ASIC 3438. In the 2.x boards, there's distortion and the FM is overdriven, drowning out the PSG. Again, your 2.3's audio oddly sounds better. The 0 also seems to have less distortion and crunch, which it's infamous for.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe YT does some tweaking to the audio after upload. I went back and listened to my raw captured audio/video and my exported file from Davinci Resolve and the audio from the 0 definitely sounds a little bit crunchier than the video on YT. I don't have any filtering going on for the video capture card in OBS and I recorded it as raw as possible to prevent changing how it sounded. Unfortunately I don't think there was going to be any way that the audio was going to come through untouched, but the difference was enough to be noticeable.

It's almost like the MK-1631's right channel gain is lower.

I would like to compare it with a known good 1631 to see if maybe there is something else wrong with this one, or if it really does sound as bad as this one does.
