Not easily. You'd have to rewind the film, remove it, and then when you reload it go back to the same point. It CAN be done if you note which frame you were on, but if you load it differently or into a different camera then the frames may overlap where the film was reloaded.
Film can only be used once, so after you had your lab develop it, if it was blank then it's done. Quick question. When you say you tried it today and had a black reel, did you take the film out of the camera and look at it immediately or take it to a lab to be developed first?
I usually just put the leader just at the take up spool and close the door. I get around 39 or 40 photos like this :)
