I just bowled a 222 last night using my ion pro that I used for the first time. I've played maybe 15 times total over about 2 months since I started and I recently switched to two hand. The big thing I'm trying to figure out is power. I can't get over 16 mph. I really enjoy your content and Packy from the house bowling. You both have helped a lot for me learning how to bowl.
Great tips Darren! I'd also like to see what the differences in tucking your right elbow in during backswing like Belmo/Vai/Packy vs having a straight arm back swing like you/Troup/Simo. Might just be a preference thing, but I started with a straight arm back swing but found that tucking my elbow allowed me to generate more power and revs.
I throw no thumb 1 handed. I hold it like Tom Daugherty. My fingers are under the ball on the left hand side (watch how his hand is in the ball thats natural for me) and when I release it my fingers are completely under the ball. PAP is 5-> .75 up i can roll it to change the pap to 5.25 and get around it more to change to 4.75. I drill to the avg (5). I use tape on my fingers and go to just past the first knuckle. My fingers are similar to simo where it is so tight i don't feel it. Also my fingers are .5 .5 (left and right) 1" Rev on both fingers. I roll it better. Belmo (if i remember right) is 7/16 left and right 1" rev Osku is 7/8" rev and 1/2 right and left. Also you may want to drill the fingers deeper (I drill all mine to 3" deep (slug depth on innovative press)). Darren. My suggestion (if you want to play around with pitches) is to keep the ring finger pitch but at least have the middle finger as 1/2 left (-.500 depending on the press). I don't have a good way to show video of what I am talking about however I like my ball roll and nothing seems to "jump" off the spot (so it is pretty forward). The 1" rev will flatten your hand out on the ball and will help with staying behind it whether you go conventional depth or finger tip depth. When I drill for most 2 handers i roll their hand (like I would if i was lowering the track so more left in the middle finger) and leave the right in the ring finger alone. I used to have 1/4" difference in pitches between ring and middle finger (so 1/2 middle 3/4 ring) but I have settled on 1" (arthritis as well as comfort) the 1/2" in the fingers (Left and Right) I don't really feel. Using turbo inserts i use a 51 and 47 then tape my fingers (actual size is 25 or 3/4 middle and 23 ring but I use the tape and bigger sizes to adjust grip pressure). By also using the larger size isnserts I can (if i want) adjust my finger depth within the ball so it is the best of both worlds.
I've been bowling two handed for about two years now, and I've been bowling in general for about fourteen. I cannot tell you how real tip number one really is. Tips two and three can vary between bowler, But one and four are absolutely the most important ones. If I had known about tip 1 last july, I would have scored about 100 places better in Jr Gold Indianaplois. Tip 4 cannot happen without tip 1 being mastered first either, trust me I tried. I am eagerly awaiting the next two handed video
I remember when you made that change in your hand position you started trouncing me there for a while plus everything looked smoother and your breakpoint became far more consistent
Something I have been doing that's been helping me a ton is how I'm holding the ball before my push away. I went from holding it similar to you, to cradling it in front of me with both hands, it helps me keep my elbow inside starting at the push and helps with keeping my 2nd hand on the ball to support the weight.
When you're talking about your off hand slipping on the ball during the back swing, the thing I have found that i really prefer is a tacky feeling on the ball with my off hand. Where the ball isn't slipping at all and my off hand is controlling the weight of the ball way more. I usually blow into my hands on the approach to create that vapor tack between my hands and the ball. I really have to do this with low grit finished balls like the Jackal Ambush (1000 grit) and even the Jackal Ghost (3000 grit). The pearls and hybrids, I still do this with but it isn't always necessary.
Gotta say, your demonstration for hand placement and keeping it under the ball was wonderful. One of the constant things I'm being told is that I'm not behind/under the ball enough but none of the coaches have ever told me how to be better at it and my attempts have all resulted in me injuring my wrist. Fantastic video Darren!
For the knuckles it’s another thing you can think about when wanting to speed up or slow down. The less of your knuckle in the ball, the less friction off your hand and more ball speed. More knuckle will create more friction with ball and slower ball speed.
I like to put my index close and pinky stretched out for my set up. I like to roll it and don't rotate it more. I don't have as much reverse so it doesn't hang up in the ball this way. It cuts my fingers when trying to get around it and trying to spin it since I go closer to 2nd knuckle. It really helps on spares too cuz the spare ball won't move at all if I use the finger placement.
I have played two handed for 9 years, before the two handed hype begin. Tip 1 is the most important thing that will make or break a shot, as it severely impacts how your ball will hook. Even the most minute mistake can make you leave a pin 5/9/10. What Darren was explaining on 01:06 is also an excellent tip. In my opinion, a lot of people forget or don't realize is that even though it's called 2 handed bowling, you are still releasing the ball like one handed just like on 02:59 (used this as it starts exactly where he releases the ball). Knowing that, I placed my palm on the position that where I will usually have while playing 1 handed, and the ball never crossed my middle finger since.
Great descriptions and demonstrations on what to do where to keep your hand in the setup and the difference with first time and 2 tip on your fingers. Definitely helped
Thanks Darren, I was definitely trying to hold the ball more with my right (bowling) hand. So I’ll work on that and staying more behind the ball on the swing forward.
This was very helpful i broke my thumb really bad had surgery and forced to learn two handed. So far it's so much fun and I have glimpses of just how good I can be. Other nights it shows how little I know about 2 handed being a very traditional bowler my whole life. Just this week I shot 135 couldn't stay behind the ball then next game shot 247 effortless. Can't wait to implement this tips and help my new journey
Thanks Darren and the Tang Dynasty crew for sharing this 2 handed journey. Throwing 2 hands is definitely fun. Being a 1 handed lefty, I play around with 2 handed righty. It feels more natural for me to throw that style righty.
For the setup as a 2 hander that I am. I set the ball more inside like by my stomach that way I can have a more relaxed setup. Down side is I drift 10 boards left but I am able to open up more. Kind of like how belmo use to throw the ball.
Ill say this from my experience about knuckles. For reference, I was always a 2nd knuckle 2 handed bowler, but my freshman year of college my coaches wanted me to do to first knuckle. Did that for about 2 years then switched back to 2nd knuckle. With first knuckle, you tend to have a much cleaner release and more axis tilt differation. However with 2nd knuckle, I see that I can stay more behind it like Mikey said, but also your ball roll itself tends to be heavier. If someone does go 2nd knuckle, I would highly recommend using Vacu grips vs the standard drill bit size. Vacus allow you to come out cleaner and have no worry about hanging on to the ball. Either that or going a half size up on grips compared to what should fit.
The other thing ill say for tip #4, mess around with the angle of your wrist left to right, in a way, moving your wrist more to the right, allows me to be way more behind it like on shorter patterns or when I don't want the ball to rip off the dry, moving it left, allows you to have more side rotation. So like how kyle does it with the way he puts his fingers in the ball, I can create that same thing but with the way my wrist is positioned tilted left or right
The 2nd knuckle was my choice because i liked the better stability feeling. I didn't have my other hand in a good position when I first tried two-handed. That meant my dominant hand had the wrist break instead of being under the ball. I now have both hands fingers touching and I haven't tried first knuckle to see if there's a difference now that I'm holding the ball better
Thank you for the tips Darren! Super excited that you're switching styles. You are a really good teacher and, have taught me a lot. You and Packy have been my internet coaches during my 2 handed journey. I just started bowling regularly last year at 30 years old and, you have been a tremendous source of knowledge for me. Keep it up mate! an good luck!
One thing I have noticed with the finger depth is that you get a little more rev rate going just first knuckle so if you are first knuckle and having issues with over hooking try going deeper to see if it lessens your rev rate, Vacu grips can help this because you can be tight first knuckle but still be able to bury your fingers if you want to.
I applied tip #2 after seeing this video. Struggle with getting my hand to stay behind the ball when getting into the release position and it fixed that nigh instantly. Also recovering from hand surgery. So taking some tension off my hand in the swing helps me greatly
Darren, u mention the reverse pitch. I have an ION PRO getting delivered 2day. Yours being 3/8 and Belmo almost at an inch. I definitely think i would benefit from it. Do you have a general pitch for some1 tryin it the 1st time?
Finally a 2Hand tip video that gets into the finer details. I’d also love to hear how Darren and Mikey get their 2H release so close to their slide foot. Wondering if feeling like you’re throwing a backup ball would help. Or if it’s a shoulder rotation thing.
I appreciate this video. I've been trying to self-teach, with help from youtube, and these are some things (specifically tip #1) that I didn't even know how to search for an answer to. Thanks a lot, Darren.
I was tracking down bad over the fingers for the longest and hand placement while at the approach really is everything between a good release and bad one.
Something that I found interesting for me is I like my second hand placement on top of the ball. When I had the fingers interlocking I struggled bc I was pushing the ball out with my second hand as well. Hence no hook and a poor shot. When I put my hand on top of the ball it still gave me enough support to hold the ball and it rolled out of my hands better
Dude, I literally just figured out that first tip about grip over this past week. To see it on here in your video is so much validation for me hahaha. I was having major issues with tracking directly over the middle finger hole, my ball not reading the lane, and just having super inconsistent releases over and over, I could never get into that groove and repeat strikes. This tip about grip and having the same hand placement every time is so important! What I did to help when I figured it out this week was go to my PSO, and have him flip all my inserts from oval to lift. I found that having that lift in my inserts gives me the ability to consistently feel that my fingers are in the ball as if I had my thumb in, and consistently feel that I was placing my hand in the same spot every time, because my fingers had to line up with the lifts the same way every time. I do think that maybe, eventually I can go back to ovals once that grip and hand placement has truly become muscle memory, that way if I absolutely need to, I can be more adaptive and dynamic with my grip and hand placement, but for now, the lifts are great for keeping my fingers and hand in the right place on the ball. Amazing content, as always, Darren! Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the Tips! I am new to two handed bowling. How often should I practice in a week. I am a beginner bowler? Just trying to make time in schedule to improve my game. Thanks.
I've played around with it, and have it down for the most part. But every now and again the ball likes to fall off of my hand almost like a backup. It's mostly random, like during warm up, and always when I feel like I'm in a good groove 😂😅
Not even joking the first tip helped so much. I didn't even realize my grip wasn't straight. I'm so much more consistent now and tied my high game of 276 in league. Averaged 230.
Is it true that if you are synchronized with the ball center of mass as it approaches the peak of your backswing and maintain that synchrony through the downswing you could remove your offhand from the ball and deliver the same shot as with the offhand maintaining contact. My backswing is relatively high for a two hander and at my age my range of motion is less than full😀. So my off hand comes off the ball completely around the apex of my backswing. That definitely adds potential for inconsistency but when my swing path is narrow and my steps are in tune with the ball, my ball hand has complete control of the ball. There is a clip here somewhere that suggested throwing a light ball no thumb with the off hand dropping off in your delivery to feel the motion that keeps your off hand controlling the ball. Their theory is a delivery more in that ball path will be more consistent What do you think?
All good tips. 1) I messed around with my grip for the longest time, before settling on the up the back, hand towards the thumb side as the best option. Then when I need more rotation, I'll adjust a bit to the pinky side. 2) I randomly stumbled on the idea of holding more weight in the offhand idea. Makes a world of difference. 3) I've tried every variation of this. Conventional, half grip, fingertips. I prefer full fingertip, because conventional strains my fingers way more. That said, conventional grips is way easier to get up the back, and way harder to accidentally over rotate the ball... but you need to get the pitches right, or you'll experience rubbing and possible blisters. 4) I was at an event that Del Ballard was at, and he randomly came up to me and gave me this tip. Don't try to hook the ball so much, stay behind the ball and let your rev rate do all the work. You can changes tilt a bit with subtle hand position changes, but no need to cock you wrist and try to make it hook.
That free hand position is so underrated but I had the same struggles. When I watched another vid that had a great tip was have your middle finger from your free hand as close as you can to your ring finger on the hand inside the ball. Makes a huge hook and control difference, at least for me.
I’m so glad to hear tip #1. I was constantly thinking I was just crazy for feeling like the ball wasn’t sitting right in my hand lol now I know what to look for
I really appreciate the tips! I went from 4 step to 5 step for 2 handed. Did you change your steps at all? Also can you possible make a video on transition? I am struggling to know where to jump 2 handed, not like 1 handed where I can just move a board at a time. Thank you! I'm from LA and would def enjoy a trip out there for a game or two with ya
I think we all started with the house ball like me. And had to rip on it to get it to turn at all. And I think I still have that dug in me. When I come up the back it goes very very straight. Any ball
This is what I’ve learned. For the guide hand (left hand for righties. Your index finger should cover the logo. I’ve fallen into traps where I lose the ball at the bottom of my swing if my guide hand is too close.
I have an unorthodox throw already and thought maybe two-handed would work for me, but I just can't make it work. My current average is 186 and climbing, so I just need to embrace my odd looking throw.
One question for you. Do you have any tips for how to throw the ball a little harder as a 2 hander? Thats the one big thing I struggle with ball speed.
Hey Darren! Great video! I've been thinking about going 2 handed to alleviate stress on my wrist. Can't bowl comfortably 1 handed even after surgery. I'm 60 but not ready to give up the game! Would you think 2 handed would be less stressful on it? Just asking for a gut feel or opinion. Thanks!
@@Ironfangzuthe “ old fella” in the grey is Alex gurkov from kegel. He’s my coach as well. We got my rev rate 450+ one handed and I started bowling last year
I’d love if you were back in Columbus if I could get a lesson from you. My two handing could use a little work but I’ll definitely try these tips for sure 😁 Thank you D-Tang!
Already the first tip omg I always used to roll over my middle finger and I went to my pro shop guy and he was like yeah put your hand over the x and it made such a hide difference
Darren do you use vacu grips for your two handed balls? is there even a point to use vacu grips if i'm just doing a fingertip grip (right before first line on my middle and ring finger)?
if you're bowling 2 handed are holes really necessary. if so can they be placed wherever the bowler likes in whatever pattern they want, not in the current conventional ways? it seems for a two hander they just get in the way.
Darren, so my hand is wrong? Or do you think maybe my pitch is wrong? Because yes, my oil track goes over my finger holes. I am a two handed bowler. I had to transition after breaking my arm.
Something i wanna say about tip 1 is if someone throws like that with grip and able to stay behind the ball the PAP is the same and the roll is the same no need to change someones comfort.
So, my track goes under the fingers like you demonstrated, however, thats how i am able to stay under and more forward as a result...my pap is quite strange as yiu can imagine, but since its all drilled off that release, i don't seem to have that issue.
I’m thinking about switching to bowling 2 handed backup from one handed with a thumb but I feel like I’m breaking my fingers so just ended up using the inserts as a guide
Can you please show how you tape your hand. My hand has been killing more since I joined a leauge and I’d love to know how I can tape it. Please and thank you in advance!
I have mobility issues that make it extremely uncomfortable to position my dominant hand the way you encourage in the beginning of the video, creating a very extreme displacement of ring and middle finger. Is there an alternative way to fix this that may be more comfortable?
I seen Troup with his ring finger up, I thought he had lot of reverse pitch in it due to his pain or injury he had years ago, but I guess it's just technique.
I just bowled a 222 last night using my ion pro that I used for the first time. I've played maybe 15 times total over about 2 months since I started and I recently switched to two hand. Tip 1 I auto did from watching belmo, he lines his thumb up before moving it to the side and I emulated it
I remember when you made that change in your hand position you started trouncing me there for a while plus everything looked smoother and your breakpoint became far more consistent
I literally just learned about it today and I can’t go to sleep I’m so excited to get into the bowling alley

Great video Darren I was wondering if 2 handed would be easier style of bowling for a bowler coming back from a shoulder injury
Gotta say, your demonstration for hand placement and keeping it under the ball was wonderful. I like first knuckle too. I usually end up twisting out of my fingers on second knuckle.

Their theory is a delivery more in that ball path will be more consistent
What do you think?
Great videos, sir. Keep up the great work and great content. Been a joy watching you grow as a bowler. #Respect
Very helpful tips. Going to try them tomorrow for practice.
That free hand position is so underrated but I had the same struggles. When I watched another vid that had a great tip was have your middle finger from your free hand as close as you can to your ring finger on the hand inside the ball. Makes a huge hook and control difference, at least for me.
I’m so glad to hear tip #1. I was constantly thinking I was just crazy for feeling like the ball wasn’t sitting right in my hand lol now I know what to look for
You are a saint for making this update
Thanks for this video, exactly what I needed!
I got to second knuckle. More control for me. I’ve got tips from Kyle when we practice together when he’s home.
I would also say going closer to the second knuckle allows me to have a more away pitch in the fingers.
Question regarding your grip with on your left hand, have you ever tried using grip tape so your left hand doesn't slip forward in your backswing?
I have an unorthodox throw already and thought maybe two-handed would work for me, but I just can't make it work. My current average is 186 and climbing, so I just need to embrace my odd looking throw.
ive never heard you mention using vacuum grip drilling...
Hey darren, does that mean if I slant my fingers after inserting it. That's what causes the ball to track on the grips?
One question for you. Do you have any tips for how to throw the ball a little harder as a 2 hander? Thats the one big thing I struggle with ball speed.
Hey Darren! Great video! I've been thinking about going 2 handed to alleviate stress on my wrist. Can't bowl comfortably 1 handed even after surgery. I'm 60 but not ready to give up the game! Would you think 2 handed would be less stressful on it? Just asking for a gut feel or opinion. Thanks!
I like how there was a 2 handed lesson going on in the background lol. Keep up the great work bro💯💯
Haha...we all noticed. I'm betting the 2-hand tips given by DTang were better than the lessons being given by that older fellow in the gray shirt.
@@Ironfangzu I'd like to think that DTang may have advised them prior to going live... 🙂
2nd knuckle is the bees knees. I struggle with spine tilt and staying behind the ball
My son had an issue with tracking over the fingers. Changed the lateral pitch and moved the track to where it needed to be
Just what i needed !!
if you're bowling 2 handed are holes really necessary. if so can they be placed wherever the bowler likes in whatever pattern they want, not in the current conventional ways? it seems for a two hander they just get in the way.
can you bring back the monthly bag update? i rly liked that series even tho it was rly short lol
Really helpful!! Thanks!!
really helpfull , thanks darren , great video btw
Darren, so my hand is wrong? Or do you think maybe my pitch is wrong? Because yes, my oil track goes over my finger holes. I am a two handed bowler. I had to transition after breaking my arm.
Something i wanna say about tip 1 is if someone throws like that with grip and able to stay behind the ball the PAP is the same and the roll is the same no need to change someones comfort.
I just bowled 202 with tip #2!!
that’s a pr for me
You could also try a Sarge Easter grip and have one first knuckle and one second.
Maximum Bob threw the Sarge grip and noone had more revs one handed.
So, my track goes under the fingers like you demonstrated, however, thats how i am able to stay under and more forward as a result...my pap is quite strange as yiu can imagine, but since its all drilled off that release, i don't seem to have that issue.
Can u do a video on how to do two handed
I’m thinking about switching to bowling 2 handed backup from one handed with a thumb but I feel like I’m breaking my fingers so just ended up using the inserts as a guide
Can you please show how you tape your hand. My hand has been killing more since I joined a leauge and I’d love to know how I can tape it. Please and thank you in advance!
Anyone notice how Belmo acts like he’s putting his thumb in the ball when first starting his approach.
Watching other people practice their game in the background is really inspiring lol
More of this please.
What are differences between locking your elbow in the backswing vs bending your elbow like Packy
Whats your drill size for bowling balls, im new and trying to order it online with custom drill.
Hey, try 1/2 way to your first knuckle. I only put the end of my fingertips in the hole. Give it a try.
I have mobility issues that make it extremely uncomfortable to position my dominant hand the way you encourage in the beginning of the video, creating a very extreme displacement of ring and middle finger. Is there an alternative way to fix this that may be more comfortable?
We need a video on one hand no thumb please
How would one deal with negative axis tilt?
Cool video talk tech bowling ball Darren tang 2 handed
I seen Troup with his ring finger up, I thought he had lot of reverse pitch in it due to his pain or injury he had years ago, but I guess it's just technique.
Dude you become my fav two handed bowler lol
Dude looks like he’s getting a lot bigger, hell yeah!
2nd knickle gives better control. Every two hander i know whos went from 1st to 2nd knuckle have always had better control.
any tip on approach?
Ok i watched this, changed my game a bit, added 40 to my average. Still got work to do but i have gone from 140 to 180
I tried sharing this on my bowling leagues Facebook page and Facebook blocked it because it goes against their community standards!
Very good info, ty
Great looking ball
Thanks!
Great video.
Try moving right and throwing it faster, you’re forcing yourself to be at the left gutter by throwing it slow all the time
