Canadian government continues push for grocery code of conduct, Loblaw and Walmart hold out

- Loblaw, Canada's largest retail conglomerate, is currently facing public backlash and pressures from elected officials to sign onto a grocery code of conduct.
Some Canadians are preparing actions against Loblaw, contesting with the high prices of groceries. Despite the federal government's push, Loblaw and Walmart - another top competitor in the country - are holding out from signing the code of conduct, which would set rules for negotiations between retailers and suppliers.
Meanwhile, Loblaw has seen two online campaigns emerge, asking people to boycott its stores during May, or to steal items off of their shelves.

Loblaws holding out after the government bailing them out doesn't look good. Should have let them shut down.
I remember when Trudeau was giving loblaws buddies 12 million for new freezers because they are so poor and can't make record profits every week.

Just legislate it, why worry about who is holding out? Laws are passed all the time that affect the general population and we don't get to vote on them, or provide input or ifluence or "hold out" no matter how it affects us so why do corporations get such a favour?

Our government does not follow rules of conduct, how do they think they can control others.
Here is a code of conduct strip the pollution back to normal standards & sprinkle the money everywhere back where it belongs.
Canadians have been stripping back pollution and the money belongs in the pockets of the Canadians who earned it.

We Canadian consumers have incredible power when we work together. Even small steps we take during the month of May will contribute to the Boycott, & help send a message to Loblaws & all grocery chains that WE'RE SICK OF BEING GOUGED!!!
In May, make a run to a different chain or a small independend food store for your weekly shop. Check out their flyers, & spend your money there instead of Loblaws.
Switch your pharmacy from Shoppers to a smaller independent pharmacy! It's as easy as walking into your new pharmacy & asking them to transfer your file from Shoppers. They do the rest!
Lots of steps we can all take, SEND A MESSAGE WITH YOUR SPENDING CHOICES IN MAY!!!
Independant grocery stores are own by National Grocery, a subsidiary of Loblaws. Global News is misleading the public, yet again.
How about Canadians start demanding for prime minister code of conduct. The rest will balance itself out.

i went to that store today $51 dollars for one small
bag of groceries it’s crazy between bills rent and food you have to choose eat less or not as healthy in order to pay a bill or rent after today I don’t really want to go back to this grocery store it use to have reasonable prices

How about actual free market capitalism. Wheat board. Dairy board , ect butter is almost $8 lb up from $5 pre covid competition brings prices down and this carbon tax is also destroying the economy. We are a carbon sink .
Lets not forget the over 1 million new canaidians that all need to eat. Can any business create more supply with growth like that?

The Competition Bureau has been complicit in corporate collusion, and higher prices, in allowing M&A resulting in fewer players. . Bigger and fewer players may make sense if your businesses are competing in the world stage for business. But for companies suppplying the Canadian market only?

Profits haven’t doubled! The higher amount in 2023 is the same as 2019 when dollars are worth less. Trudeau is directly responsible for all of this and people keep ignoring that fact

@@Trythis837 I'm sympathetic to people who are having difficulty paying for groceries. The prices have really gone up. The sizes have decreased in many categories. However, we have to identify the correct cause if we want to work towards a solution. I'm in favour of a conversation about the importance of shareholder value, executive compensation, corporate taxes, capital gains taxes and such. We also must recognize that reliance on food banks was increasing among the poor and working poor due to rising housing costs. Inflation for groceries and consumer goods only made things worse. However, there is no value in scapegoating. What are the margins? If you can't show that the margins have increased significantly then you can't claim illegal gouging practices are to blame.

You realize that the carbon price was increased by $0.03/L on Apr 1st, 2024 and the rebate was increased similarly depending on region, right? And that the Bank of Canada report stated that the carbon price and rebate system accounts for 0.15% of inflation. And that the PBO report states that 8/10 Canadians get back more than they spend in the carbon price and rebate system. You do know that, right? The issue is competition laws in Canada allowing for oligopolies. This happened in phones, ISPs, groceries, gas, and many more sectors. Talk to your MP and tell them that you want stronger competition laws and to break up large corporations so there is more competition in the market.
you dont pay any carbon tax and if you do unless you are a millionaire you get back what you put into it on your taxes.

was behind an elderly lady today in Zehrs 4 bags of groceries no meat $345.00 when we got married in 71 we could buy a weeks groceries for $20.00

Our town now has taken to picking on the local fruit stand its frustrating as a single mom being made to shop at these expensive stores due to lack of other food

All this Grocer’s Code of Conduct is doing is boosting business for Costco and selling memberships. Costco was not implicated in the bread price fixing scandal a few years back and was one of the first grocers to sign on to the new code of conduct.😂😂
Buy 2 loafs of sprouted grain bread for 7 bucks at Costco same bread is 7 bucks for one loaf at Walmart

Grocery store chains are business. Their prices include transportation cost which is influenced by fuel prices. My question to the leaders of this country is how are these business supposed to survive in order to place those eggs and bread on their shelfs? They will need to pass some of the operating cost to their products, it is inevitable. Ideology in Canada has become more important than economy... it reminds me of something.
It is imperative that all civil service pensions, CPP, and Canadian politicians are forced to divest any food distribution shares they may own.
Maybe once our government stops profiting from our food insecurity, they'll develop an appetite to regulate the industry in our favour instead of theirs.
Stealing from them will just increase the prices. Opposite effect of what you want. Boycotting is the smart way to send them a message.

To be fair theres a monopoly in Canada 3 families control all the groceries in the country and they are all in cahoots just like telus and now i guess only rogers theres 0 competition all the big boys own the little independents directly or by being the wholesaler to them completely controlling the market meaning - win win for them and give you the illusion of competition
